I watched TV3 news tonight and didn't see anything, the night before the first home game. Was hoping they'd talk the match up - maybe with a McKain 200 games angle.
Did anyone see anything on TV1?

didn't see anything either. Its all about Dan Carter atm. Even a big win tomorrow and I can see 1 news saying "the Phoenix have finally won" and putting us in a negative look anyway

TV1 seemed to be excited about the EPL starting and there being an U-20 motocross tournament somewhere in NZ.
I'm now refusing to do interviews for any NZ TV channel (including Sky) in protest.

Tell me about it, how can the news channels continually go on about the same non-story regarding Carter? They say exactly the same thing on an almost daily basis. Last night on both news we have a little interview with Leo and nothing about Smeltz. Even the League between 2 Aussie clubs was on before the Phoenix.

It's mightily tedious over here if you are not a Rugby fan.

Nothing on Smeltz's four goal haul for the Gold Coast United or on any of the A-league games. Not even a quick round up of the round. Only a bit on Phoenix goals and win. But how are the public to know anything about the opposition if there is no round up of the other teams and then expect to appreciate what the Phoenix are up against. There was only a mini clip on TCGW of one of Smeltz's goal as part of the collective sport round up. Besides that, nothing else to appreciate.

The thing that pisses me off the most about the sports news - they spent a good 5 minutes talking about Tiger Woods every time he plays golf somewhere, yet they can't show more than 2 minutes worth of Phoenix footage, as a passing after-thought.
No coverage of any of the other New Zealanders playing, Killen for Celtic rarely gets a mention, Smeltz in GCU etc.
Really shoddy sports journalism.

How they all missed showing Smeltzies quad is a mystery. Doesn't matter which sport you follow, that is massive. Equivalent to getting 4 wickets in a row in cricket, at least 2 holes in one by tiger and three motorcross freestyling accidents.
I'm looking forward to Dobbo's plays of the week on Friday night. Leo should be in top 3 and if Smeltz isn't they are blind.

Not to mention the HUGE media presence at the 'One shot for glory' launch yesterday. Every major network there, some with multiple cameras.
How much of that was covered ?

Saw a brief piece on TV1, 3 and prime. Prime zoomed in on Phoenix boys picking away at the food on the table
strange kind of footage actually, all very rushed

Surprised they haven't had Wynton on to give his impression of Smeltz.
........and no that doesn't mean he'd have to run around with a bad haircut

The football news coverage is a piece of nonsense.
Of all the countries I have ever been to, NZ must have the worst.
It won't feature football but it will feature Rugby (fair enough), cricket, hockey, basketball, swimming, rally car racing, F1 car racing, moto GP, netball, and a whole host of other garbage sports that would not get a second of coverage on the UK news for example!

I think CGW could get in on the boys more, they barely mention them cos they are a weekday show and only show the goals in that 'One Game at a Time' recap thing they have on Mondays. They are funny and affable chaps, and would appeal to the younger audience.
They are even owned by Sky (yes, I know) so it would promoting their own product to an extent. Problem is all the CGW team are Auckland based it seems.

As I have posted elsewhere...a recent survey of kiwis showed 37 percent said they were interested or very interested in football. Thats around 1..5 million people.
The stuff that people have mentioned would be interesting to many TV watches.....but it does not get shown. Why? Because most sports reporters, editors etc are rugby heads, they don,t get football or feel threatened by it.
Thats just the way things are.....all we can do is keep making some noise, keep football out there in the public and hope that one day we get more sports journalist who think that Carters groin is less interesting than a Smeltz four goaler

I have plenty of friends who are massive rugby supporters, but still have a slight interest in football - a number of them regularly watch the EPL Highlights show and that sort of thing, but dont have enough interest to watch entire games. These are people who watch the sports news and text me any time something about football is mentioned - they are interested in football on the news and in the media (completely separate from the lack of live game coverage argued about elsewhere). As general sports fans they do want to see what is happening, and putting it on the news and other current sports shows is the best way to maintain interest from these primarily rugby people. I dont really watch the news, but after reading this thread i am bitterly disappointed at their lack of coverage. Beggars belief that smeltz' haul was not mentioned at all. paulm2009-08-21 07:51:54

On a 'general football coverage across the board' note... even if the ratings are low, why cant we look to the future and try and move with the times - more often than not, as their smaller neighbour, we often follow the trends set by australia. And we all know how football popularity has tracked over there recently... albeit boosted by world cup success... which we now have a chance at!
F*ck i would love it if we qualified, I WOULD LOVE IT surely then at least some media saturation would be acheived?

For the media attention we want...
an NZ equivalent of Oz's Frank Lowy is required, imo.
Someone with huge financial and business clout, loves NZ and wants to see NZ Football go ahead in leaps and bounds (and sees the huge business opportunity that lies within).
Prepared to knuckle down for the long term, gather like-minded business people to invest similiarly.
If that happened, watch the TV media scrum that would ensue and marvel at the coverage local football would get.
*memo to NZFootball* personal invites to anyone on this list..have we got a deal for you!
*memo to NZ Team* Please win... At all costs. No pressure.

It's not that TVNZ misses everything. It deliberately ignores it. I think you will find the buck stops at the head of Sports News, who, if it is the same person as it was last year, is a dead-set hater of football. HN can you confirm it is the same former boxing "expert" who moonlights as a sports book author. There are people in high places in the media who are actively anti-football.
But then again football in this country have given them plenty of ammunition in the past, what with the Auckland NSL-A-League woes, Football NZ's inability to put together a decent home programme for the All Whites and the hapless NZFC. Apart from the Phoenix, it's pretty difficult to maintain positive newsworthy coverage.

You didn't miss it - I watched the whole sports segment of TV3 news tonight to see highlights of Roar game - there was no coverage.
Plenty of coverage of overseas nothing tournaments but no coverage of the local A-League team.
To be fair TV3 are normally reasonable with Nix coverage but came up short tonight.

HN is right.
When matches are played at 5pm on a Sunday evening, the result is reported on the Sunday evening news. Therefore the result is not 'news' on Monday.
This is the case with ALL sports, so don't go thinking you guys are being hard done by ... again.

Who the hell watches Sunday Evening news when it is about 11pm after the movies? People have to work the next day.
Should we suggest that the Phoenix should play on the Saturday late night just to get their media report on the Sunday 6pm news and Sunday Newspaper?????
Now if they show game on free-to -air people will watch and know what happens.AllWhitebelievr2009-08-25 10:52:07

I'm pretty sure I knew the All Blacks score by Monday night though? Is that still 'news'?
What I am used to on a Monday news sports bulletin is a brief round up of the weekend's games - showing the goals, maybe a quick interview with the manager / goalscorer, and then putting the league table on screen to show the current state of play. All of this could probably be done in about 2 minutes.
Instead, we get inane news about Rugby, rugby, rugby, 'tall blacks', 'silver ferns', 'blacksticks', 'blackcaps', rowing, golf, ice hockey, curling, rally cars, moto gp and other rubbish that probably about 3 people in the country actually care about and never even rate a single mention in huge news markets such as the UK, for example.
