If he wants to further his career. Wouldn't it be better to look somewhere in Europe. Maybe League Championship.

Or a club that wont leave him as the only striker at the club slaving away up front on his own every week?

I think that may factor...

Make him marquee,we may as well

Tony, even if he wants to go don't let him, please don't let him!

And isn't it illegal for Gold Coast to be talking to Smeltz?  Due to some contractual stuff that I don't even pretend to understand.  Oh well, if he does go I suppose it is good to have Kiwis spread throughout the league, having all our eggs in one basket is not wise at all.

I hope we get Joel Porter next season!

Gold Coast billionaire Clive Palmer has so much money he can wipe his ass with hundreds, he has a private jet for the players to use for christ sake! The phoenix CEO and owner need to take a good look at themselves only giving smeltz a one year contract! He was our best player and scores the majority of our goals, there is another rumour that Costa Barbourouses is of to the Gold Coast because of the lack of game time. My sources on the coast have also revealed that Ryan Giggs will be playing 5 matches for an extravagant amount of money. Along with Kanu, Zinedine Zidane to name a few.... You heard it here first.

trying to peddle this story and give it more legs than its got. someone lock this down until we hear something from Smeltzy, gold coast or Tony.

In the meantime its scaremongering to sell rubbish newspapers.

We'll wait and see mate. That was last week surely.   If you want to tell us who it is, then it is worth listening too. In the meantime we'll see what Terry and Tony can come up with. Perhaps we should have assigned YF litter bearers to carry him and and his family through the city while someone yells 'Make way' Make way'

For mine this needs a source or to be shut down.

Horus' pensmanship sounds rather like the Sunday News or wateva it is.

Oh yeah they'd totally come to play here because of the standard of the league and the cash they can earn.

Can someone lock this rubbish down.....

Cafu = 38, Roberto Carlos = 35  Ronaldo =  33  Players ending there career can work serious cash under the counter at a franchise like this, so to AGENT 47 why would the came here and play = Simple Money and lots of it!!!

The Sun newspaper continues to be boycotted far and wide on Merseyside since its gutter press efforts in covering the Hillsborough Disaster in April, 1989.

The Sunday News merits similar treatment by NZ's footballing public. It lacks quality and, more importantly, credibility, given as it has always been a paper targeted mainly at the cerebrally challenged - the league- and rugby-following fraternity. Hence its general content, and anti-football nature.

Leave it on the shop shelves, where it belongs., and encourage those of an oval ball bent to follow suit.

Cheers,

They only have 1 more year of their licence to run so I doubt they could legaly offer more than that at the moment.
Also its against the A-League rules for clubs to be making offers to contracted players at this time of the season.
The stories written by a jurno who should be unemployed. Dont waste your time buying the paper that employees him.

I can see the headline now:

Stop Out in with shock Smeltz offer.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

600,000 over three years must be a random figure given its a huge chunk of the cap. I really doubt GCU will actually pull off any of the big name signings they claim to be aiming for and if they do the players will be there for the sun and the paycheck.

I also conur with whoever said people need to actually look at Tony's post.

Plus Hous, if GCU have so much as rung Smeltzy up to ask if he'd even be interested they are looking at a pretty big fine and a lot of hatred right off the bat.

"October 1 is when clubs can start talking with off contract players."

I thought there was a pre-match interview when Tony P said 1 January was when Shane could talk to other clubs? Did I mishear the statement? I guess so - unless anyone can say otherwise?

Anyone see the A-league review show on sky sports tonight? They were talking about Smeltz and Danny Hay said it looks like he is leaving for another club for financial security, GC wasnt mentioned but it didnt sound good. I dont know if Danny is kept in the loop but NZ has a small football community so it wouldnt surprise me if he knew something. Heres hoping that hes full of nonsence like Matheson

Stories from Newstalk ZB this morning...

It appears Gold Coast United have no interest in signing Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz, or any Kiwi for that matter.

It's been reported the A-League expansion club has agreed in principle to a three year deal with Smeltz but coach Miron Bleiberg has rubbished those claims.

He says the reports are way off the mark and they haven't even spoken to Smeltz about a possible deal.

Bleiberg says under Football Federation Australia regulations any New Zealander playing for an Australian team is deemed as an overseas import so that makes them a unattractive proposition.

A-League expansion club Gold Coast United have rubbished claims they've agreed in principle to sign Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz.

It comes following a Sunday News report that Smeltz had struck a three year deal with the Gold Coast after being left insulted by the Phoenix's offer of a contract extension.

But Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg swears he hasn't made an offer to Smeltz and in fact hasn't spoken to the striker in years.

 ++++++++++++++

Gold Coast United coach Miron Bleiberg has categorically denied they've offered a contract to Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz.

It comes following a Sunday News report that Smetlz had struck a three year deal with the A-League expansion club.

But Bleiburg says the report is way off the mark as clubs aren't allowed to approach players who're coming off contract until today.

What about Adelaide?
Permalink Permalink

At the moment Adelaide have four Brazilian players... they would have to drop one to sign Smeltz as despite his Australian ancestory he is a New Zealand international.

Isn't that where his wife's from, or where she had the baby? Or something like that?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Other clubs were only allowed to talk to him as of this morning.  Adelaide is two and a half hours behind here, so they won't even be awake yet... conjecture.
