We played 2 up front yesterday did we not?And the midfield supported the front pair quicker, and we actually created CLEAR chances (see Daniel's 2 goals in particular) which is something we've not been doing.

Glad to see we finally got there though.

No egg on my face. Been saying for weeks we needed to play 2 up front and Greenacre needs more support up front. That happens, we score 6. Enough said really.

The guy shares similar opinions to me.

Not really sure the guy has egg on his face either because he was writing about games that happened before yesterday and a lot of what he said is not automatically rubbish because we suddenly win a game.

I hope we can keep up the form of yesterday and there will be no need for any further articles like that.

I'm prepared to give him some more time on the basis that he seems to have now realised that 1 up front was not working.

I HOPE we have now turned the corner, the next game will be interesting.

Yesterday showed what we are capable of. As I think I've said, the main source of my frustration is that we were not delivering the goods that I thought the overall squad was capable of.

Keep playing like yesterday more often than not and the finals are a definite possibility.

the thing is stevo all that really changed yesterday was the efficiency in front of goal - it all suddenly clicked and GCU bore the brunt of it.
We've been playing attack minded football for six solid weeks, just nothing has come of it.

But look at how many bodies we had in the box at times as well?

Yes we took our chances for a change, but we created better chances than normal, easier ones.

Daniel's 2 goals were perfect examples of what we've NOT been doing enough of - hitting the byline and getting a pinpoint cutback / cross in from close in.

A lot of what we've done over the last few weeks has been from crosses from way out wide that have largely been aimless.

2 up front works better for us, we must continue to play that way IMO, at home anyway.

'Technically' we were playing 3 up front for most of the season but look how that worked out.

Yesterday we just seemed to be getting forward quicker, and in higher numbers. Something definitely changed, and not just the taking of the chances.

I don't think that the formation changed at all - we still played Ifill off Greenie, with Daniel, Leo and Brownie getting forward to support.  The difference was that we kept the ball better which allowed our players to get further forward.  Greenie looks isolated when we have lost possession before the other players have got near him, not because the formation was wrong.

I think that no change in formation and us scoring 6 goals actually shows what you have been saying as being incorrect, and that those of us who said we were playing ok just not getting the luck were right.  It is obviously not as black and white as that but I think that over the last few weeks when we have gotten players into the box the crosses were poor or cleared by the defender.  On Sunday they went through the defenders legs - that bit of luck we were overdue.

Bit of Stevo, Steve-O confusion there.

Of course that's what you'd say!

But the simple fact is that with the same group of players playing in the same way we knocked in six goals.  The radical overhaul that the stuff guy and you have been asking for just isn't needed, sure we did some things BETTER but can you really point to any specific changes that Herbert made that meant our whole attitude was different?

SOme times instead of agitating for change we just have to accept that what is necessary is just to do things better, the team believe in the personel and the game plan and hopefully that will lead to more performances like this one.

I'd also like to add this quote from Rob Smyth in the Guardian.  It's taken completely out of context here but I think the sentiment is completely appropriate here:

"So many factors determine a football match that an obsession with tactics to the exclusion of everything else can occasionally seem like tedious intellectualising"

Great quote. Ta!!

Ok so we've not changed formation...erm despite the fact that we clearly have.

We are now playing 4-4-2, before we were not because it wasn't so long ago we were all arguing about whether we had 1 up front or 3 up front. Not sure how this can be denied when I have seen it with my own eyes.

I don't think we've played as well as that in any previous game and been unlucky not to win (the 2nd half in Brisbane is probably the closest).

We have not been creating chances like those created for both of Daniels goals - i.e. in the box, hitting the byline, picking out a player in the centre. On Sunday we did that and reaped the rewards.

Whatever, it doesn't really matter - we have now won, and won convincingly. You guys can believe what you want, and I'll believe what I want, the conclusion is still the same, 3 points and something to build on now that some high standards have been set.

Pointless going over it all again, it's onwards and upwards from here.

If Ifil was playing up front (I assume that's who you're referring to) then how did the midfield line up in your supposed formation?

I knew you would start about saying that steve-o,since you have never really seemed to understand our formation to begin with, you just seem to fit it to what helps your argument.

fact is,nothing changed on the weekend, except chances going in and a lot of players playing out of their skin. Everything just clicked...in a huge way.

You also agreed with feverish that things changed 3 weeks ago,and that it clicked and worked and thats why we won. Yet after the last 2 games before the 6-0 win,you were still calling for ricki to change. You really contradicted yourself big time there

Allegedly

Still nothing from this guy - I find it unbelievable that he hasn't made any kind of a follow up after the phoenix score 10 goals in three matches in 10 days.  You can't just write about an issue and then go and hide - it makes stuff as a media organisation look ridiculous!

The Colin Meads of NZF - wheel him out when you want uninformed opinion that harks back years.

Thank god we can move on from him and his ilk

I find that article appalingly ungracious considering that 4 weeks ago he accused Herbert of failing completely.  Since then the Phoenix have scored goals and moved into the top 6 and the All Whites have qualified for the World Cup

"His caution is evident in his reluctance as a coach to change selection, formation and tactics unless forced to. He is predictable, to a fault at times. It is almost as if he finds it hard to drop players for fear of upsetting them."

Like changing from 4-4-1-1 to 3-4-3 in the allwhites and from a 4-2-3-1 to what is looking more like a 4-4-2 for the Phoenix.
Like dropping Daniel, one of S1's best players for most of S2, like yanking a poor Diego after 30mins and pretty much not playing him since, like dropping Bertos, our best player for the first stretch of the season after a few weeks of underperforming.

Idiot.

There should be a journo tag match:

Thompson and Rattue (the bushwackers) vs Fred Woodcock and Tony Smith (the good guys)

Maybe also throw in  Deaker and Stanaway vs Miles Davis and Gourdie.
