Are we going to get to a point again where reporters will snoop around the forums looking for stuff to write about?

theprof is quoted in today's 'What's going at the Phoenix?' piece in the Dom Post. Still can't find a link for that unfortunately.

I was quoted on 442 the other day.

I just hate it when they take one radical post, then portray it as the view of every fan, even when in reality everyone else in the thread disagrees with them. Happened a couple of years ago quite a lot.

Really does irk me how the media has started to use quotes off forums/twitter/friendface etc and present them as news. Journalism is a dying art.

It's acceptable to chuck one in there to show one point of view (albeit a bit lazy). But when they start creating whole stories, put the quotes out of context, or use a quote as representative of a whole viewpoint to suit their agenda when in fact that isn't the general viewpoint. Those things irk me.

Yep - I posted that on the owner's thread.

Unfortunately they didn't attribute it to you Tegal.  Even worse they didn't attribute it to Threak.

Phoenix 'revved up' for Jets

Love them or hate them that's good coverage.

The big piece 'What's going on at the Phoenix?' goes over a lot of familiar ground and wheels out the likes of Kevin Fallon to offer his particularly unsophisticated views. However, the editorial is really good, noting the importance of the Phoenix to Wellington, giving Gareth and Welnix credit for trying to do something good (while not communicating especially well) and challenging the Wellington public to support the team.

And today they have sunk even lower in the journalism standards.

A thread on the Yellow Fever website titled "Coaching Angst - SackRicki, Hire The Knowledgeable Mr Morgan," in reference to outspoken co-owner Gareth Morgan, had stretched to 96 pages yesterday.

That gives the impression to readers that there is 96 pages of people calling for us to SackRicki, which is definitely not the case. It was pretty bad when they presented a post by one person as the opinion of the entire Fever, but now they aren't even doing that. Pretty lazy journalism in my opinion.

I said in the 'Rack Sicki' thread that its 96 pages over 3.5 years... Interesting how that fact would not give the story the cred it needs.

Is this what journalism has come to? Trawling thru online forums, picking out selected quotes and referencing in jokes without any context. Hope the executive rings up and asks for a please explain.

Which was the thread that Threak was quoted from?  At that stage it was about 35 pages - that was the benchmark for getting into the DP article back then.

From stuuf webpage. I put in transfer speculation as well, but fits here better

"The Wellington Phoenix say they will make a major announcement at 9am this morning.

There has been much speculation in recent weeks about whether the club will remain at the Cake Tin or move to a smaller venue and the team's run of poor results has added extra pressure"

Seems they can't tell a player announcement when they see one. We are  in the transfer window at the moment FFS

I've just had this discussion with Patrick on Twitter but that story this morning reflects worse on the Phoenix than it does on Stuff or The Dom. It shows how badly they have lost control of their message in their key media market. In an ideal world, or simply in a sporting best practise world, this would have been tactically leaked to the Dom last night (I'm sure they got the Press Release early under embargo but that's not what I mean) so they could soften the ground or create a bit of hype around it. Instead, because they aren't talking to the Dom and announced there would be a major announcement the paper was absolutely free to speculate. They shouldn't have had to of speculated because they should have known and if not known they should have been pointed in the right direction.

With regards the specifics of the relocation story, yes it's bullshit and the club have come out to people on here and said its bullshit but have they dropped their wall of silence with the Dom to tell them that? Morrison told them the Phoenix have had discussions, whether he in fact is or should be is a different story, but Morrison is a reputable source so they had every right to print it. If the Phoenix haven't officially rebutted it (and I suspect they can't categorically rule it out because the discussions, no matter how informal or at low level , have taken place) then why can't the Dom keep running it?

Again, it's message management 101.

You make a very good point. If the club had a media manager with a good relationship with the Dom Post, then the club could easily give the paper a heads up about things before they get announced properly, and therefore help the articles be in a more positive manner. It would also give the Dom Post a good way to do some fact-checking before they run articles. I imagine the conversation would have gone "Any truth to what Morrison is saying about you re-locating?" "Nah mate, that's complete bollocks". A much better situation than having the Nix completely shun the media.

We really, really, really need a media manager.

Yes, it is a great idea to try and manage the media

However, that can't be used as an excuse by the media for lowering their own standards and failing to do even basic fact-checking before publishing a story. As always, there is a bit of middle-ground here.

And of course, as soon as the Nix do have a media manager the media will then be complaining that all they ever get from the club is carefully controlled spin.

Did you see/hear any of the coverage this morning, pre announcement? This should have been leaked or it should have been announced at a different time. Vietch had two hours of people taking the piss out of the Nix (same kind of stuff as we were all doing on Twitter) because he had no idea of what was going to be announced. Dom had nothing so they re-run the speculation about the stadium move. It should have been announced last night or leaked so that the main newspaper in the key media market could have run a full story (Friday paper will be dominated by T20 I imagine) and the major sports radio announcer in the country could have done a piece.

This happens in all sport, it happens in the Wellington sports media market.

Agree. But that isn't going to change because it's not in the budget.

As for the Veitch thing, by the time that was going on the Twitterverse had already confirmed it as a foreign player from next season and in fact had confirmed it was Hernandez.  A researcher (which I assume they employ on news stories) could have found that in under 5 minutes if they could be arsed. If it had been an Auckland Rugby story they would have been all over it.

Meanwhile the Stuff researcher threw out the Newtown link, laughable when it was an article a fortnight ago, embarassing this morning.

The Hernandez story was the main feature on the back page of today's Dom Post, ahead of the Halberg awards. And surprisingly, the article was very positive, even when referring to Sundays game.

An emabrgoed version wouldn't have helped. People would still be specualting and radio sport wouldn't be able to say otherwise.
