But ultimately, isn't up to the intelligent reader to decide what they belive and what they don't? Many here have criticised the paper for the quality of reporting, lack of sources, opportunity for response etc and have formed a view on the accuracy of the story. Times have changed from when the majority of people were less educated and not bought up to question authority and what was written. i feel confident enough to make my own decisions on what is presented to me and i'm not going to trouble myself about what the great unwashed might be conned into believing. They are just as likely to decide the truth or otherwise based on what kind of car the journo drives than any facts presented to them.

Don't agree with people being more educated these days and question authority more. You only have to look at protests against Nuclear weapons, the Vietnam war and the 1981 tour to see that people could challenge and protest in the past. I think education is much poorer these days and that's despite the internet. I was talking to a young guy the other day. I recommended a book on medieval warfare as I knew he liked the subject. He said "I don't read books I look at the internet" and was proud of it. What person could be proud of not reading books? This guy has a degree. In times past getting a degree was seen as a very challenging, (unless you could buy it). These days any muppet can get one.

If anything people are less challenging and more accepting of the rubbish served up by the media as truth that's not only "the great unwashed".

In many ways education is poorer BECAUSE of the internet. A quick google search then whatever rubbish that pops up is taken as fact.

He also ignores the fact that we do have a paid membership - the fevercard.

That's not a membership card in the sense that someone who has it is superior to someone who hasn't.

The idea with the fevercard is that it would allow us to drive sponsorship deals with merchants and thus make more money without having to directly take it out of you.

That's the other thing Budgie overlooks. We don't want your money. We want to find ways to let people sell shit to you so that we can take their money (viz TAB - who you should all support btw).

If we put a paywall up, well I think that would ruin this place.

Just like it would ruin Budgie's paper if they did it.

Exactly right.

See evidence: "The Flying Squadron"

The ironic thing is that if there was a paid membership, then Burgess's unanswered questions that he never asked, would actually be valid.

Guess it includes the loss in the last round of last season.

Perhaps. Or maybe they saw it was round 10 and assumed we had played 10

The article might of been written by the female ground announcer at the Cake Tin.

Oh right. Didn't see that.

To be fair, I don't think the subeditor read the article, so they wouldn't have seen the "including last seasons 3-2 loss" line either.

Fairfax no longer use Sub Editors. Reporters expected to get things right

The headline does tend to suggest 10 games played this season. Wouldn't surprise me. But the article seems about right.

I read some where a "Right first time policy" is now in place. If not the case, I duly withdraw and apologise!

The difference from what I understand is now the subs aren't strictly based in the region of where they sub their stories like they were in the past, so in this case there was probably someone from Taranaki who has no idea about football doing the headline, and just read the first few paragraphs.
In the past the journos and subs were on the same site as each other, now it's just complete random and done via the net. Not ideal for specialised topics.

"extends to four draws and five losses this season". Any sub worthy of the name and the pay packet should have seen this line at the top of the second column. Sack him. Or at least forego the Xmas bonus.

20 points - For live tweeting the interview.
50 points - If you manage to ask "is this on the record?" more than once.
100 points - If you bring a copy of the Herald to the interview.

Sometimes Smithy, no matter what you guys do, you're just never going to win.

The redeeming fact is though, the fans/people to whom make the effort to join in with fever related events or merchandise, they know. They know that there is no hidden agenda, no secret to be kept. They know that it is for fun, for the betterment and promotion of football and the people involved.

This is something that some members of the 4th estate don't understand and will never be able to.

As is always the case (in my experience) he's actually a pretty good bloke.
