So any club going to play a few games in Auckland?

Or would that mean we'd have to stump up for a proper cricket ground for them to play on...

This was the St Kilda jersey in 1919-1922. If they bring it back for this match then I will back St Kilda.

Watched some fumbleball the other week.  Unless my hearing was way off, they had a "Bachelor" and some bloke called "Marriage" playing.  Most amusing.  "Bachelor to Marriage....Bachelor goes for a disposal!!!"  etc.  And Marriage seemed a right munter too.  Looked about 6'5, mullet.

Aussies, South Sea yanks.  THe lot of them.

I'm getting a group together, definitely keen to see a game, was a bit gutted when we were in Melbourne last March that no games were on close enough.

Looks like they really want to expand into the NZ market as much as possible. Maybe this is leading to a NZ based franchise in the future?

They have the cash reserves to plan for franchises 20 yrs down the track. The ANZAC Day game is the foot in the door, but bet they wish they could stage it in Auckland.

I guess that events like these are the only benefit to being the only proper oval stadium in the country.

In Aussie, they pressure State & Local government into building stadiums for them to use. Not sure they could do that in Auckland.

Regardless of telephone provider, monthly and annual subscription packages are available to anyone, anywhere in New Zealand via data connectivity or WiFi. Content offering will include live games, full match replays, press conferences, feature videos, news and tipping.

Sky and the A-League could learn a lot from the AFL's way of doing things, this is an awesome initiative. I'll probably end up watching way more of the AFL on my phone that I would have if it was just online.

Examples?... The Gabba? The SCG? The Olympic Stadium?... oh - Perth?

They're pretty sharp on social media I have to say - tweeted a question with an #AFL tag and they answered about 10mins later, great to see they know what they're doing and not just relying on @AFL stuff... had a similarly easy experience with the NZ AFL guys.

It's nothing earth shattering but simply making it easy for (potential) fans to connect - they do it far better than rival codes.

The stadium for Gold Coast is normally what I see cited whenever it comes up. AFL controls the stadium, yet the state government paid for all the upgrades.

Maybe Wellington could sell them the RoF and use the cash to build a new stadium ...

Btw not trying to sound anti AFL. Just they do have a lot of money and influence to throw around.

Carrara Stadium has been there for years, was a bluddy brilliant upgrade though... Qld Govt did the exact same thing at Robina for the Titans/NRL. That's their policy I think rather than AFL - though Carrara is the Suns based and not much else, there's no first class cricket on the Goldie, the play at the Gabba and use AB Field where Qld Cricket is based for other stuff.

No idea what they've done in other state's though... and what we can learn in NZ just quietly.

But the problem is that the state gov. charges like wounded bulls for Robina and that is one of the reasons the Gold Coast went down and also the Titans are not getting the crowds.

The AFL spent the best part of the 90's and 00's buying up all the real estate that the clubs own to help the clubs clear their debts. This has resulted in the AFL holding all the power in the fact that the clubs rely on the AFL to provide the balance of money that they need to run their club after club memberships have been sold and sponsorship obtained. It also means that the AFL has lots of extremely valuable land assets which they can use to their benefit. Thirdly it makes it much easier to sell the game to potential sponsors as the all the clubs play at either the MCG or Docklands at least 12 times a year for Interstate clubs and Geelong and up to 18 matches for the Melbourne teams.

This gives them the clout to as repective governments to bend over and take one for the local team!

Nobody cares about the NAB Cup, it's purely pre season - and more of a development/wider squad thing, the gun players tend to play limited (sometimes barely any) minutes and most coaches use it to have a look at their wider squad/new recruits, etc. Hence it's no kinda guide to potential season form.

But for where the Lions have been in recent years, we're starting to bring some kids through to the next level which is great to see. We may have a sniff at the top eight this year if we can get on a good run and Brown/Merritt play well. Definitely good signs... tho still a couple of years away from (possibly) being in the top four etc. But then it's sport... and you just never know...
