Craft Beer - a thread of beer snobbery and looking down one's nose

Myself, I've lost by brewing mojo since moving and buying a house (too many other things to spend $$$$ on) but when I get my ducks in a row am keen to move from a basic extract setup to BIAB. Have seen a couple of demos at BZ and it looks to be the next logical step for a beginner (without many hundreds to spend on a Grainfather setup - haha).

Went past BZ the other day and it appeared to have closed down...might be wrong though.

Also...Had a Moa Sour Cherry Lambic a couple of days ago. Awful stuff.

Is that the one that tastes like a shark rosé? Think I tried it well into the night at the Malthouse a month or two ago.

That's the one. They also do a Blanc Sour - not sure why Moa insist on these beers brewed to seem like wine styles. They are rubbish and Moa have lost their way significantly. 

Josh Scott who started Moa is the son of Allen Scott the winemaker, so the influence comes from there - I saw something the other day where they were going to make craft wines using a blend of grapes and hops, although they may be doing that under the Allen Scott label rather than Moa

and back to the original topic - I picked up a limited release Tuatara Conehead ($8) at New World Thorndon the other day, really really nice (but you do need to like hops)

Classic case of just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should (unless you are Garage Project and nail it 95% of the time)

I quite enjoyed the cherry lambic that I tried, being a wild beer I think it differs year on year.

Giving the Rogue Hop Organic Pilsner a shot with my curried lentils tonight - not bad

Big fan of both rogue hop and curried lentils. Currently sipping the Harrington's ESB, and also considering curry. Unfortunately did not think to soak any lentils this morning.

I was at a craft beer festival a couple of months ago, and talking to a brewer about sour beers. He was going on about how it is a massively growing trend, and will be everywhere in the near future. He gave me some to try and it was fudgeing awful. 

I like some of the Sour beers I've tried but that Moa stuff was just poor.

Had the ParrotDog BloodyDingo last night - its basically a cross between a red ale and an IPA. Was quite nice but a little bit too full on I thought. A bit less hoppy and a bit less strong (7.7% and you could tell) and it would be great IMO

Have you tried the Panhead Canheads range yet? Brilliant marketing and brilliant beer as well.

Sour beers wont be in my fridge, cant stand them, fudgeing fudgeing awful. 

They had a sour night at Brothers last year I think it was, I couldnt get why any brewers would waste good malt like that.

Had an Emersons London porter on tap at a bar in Nelson today, very nice, smooth, tending towards a choclatey stout

Man I'm all over NZ beers at the moment.

Was surprised to see canheads at Karori New World. Good to see the supermarkets slowly expanding their beer range. Thorndon New World is probably the best, even better than most liquor stores.

Yeah Chaffers normally has a pretty good range for a supermarket too

Also, does anyone remember Viking? It was brewed by the Mill about 12 years ago before Brenner and that, and it had the tagline "Conquer the Taste". Which was basically admitting it tasted like arse. It was 8 bucks a dozen though.

Ranfurly got me through tertiary education. $15 for a dozen 440ml cans. 

Yeah cheeper than water. I actually did a marketing paper for some reason, and my project was a ranfurly bar with ranfurly fountains.

I bought Viking when I couldn't afford flame.

Flame was 5.2% IIRC - as opposed to the measly 4% of Viking, Tui, Ranfurly, DoBros etc. Tasted fudgeing horrible though.

Ahhhhh Flame... whilst most of us (sales/admin/head office) people would get Monteiths, Heineken or Export Dry for our monthly allocation - the boys in the warehouse would always go with the 5.2% of flaming goodness. It was all about the bang for (no) buck lol.

Lion Ice? Even came in an 18 pack with a foil lined box for those 'lazy student days' at the beach.

Yep flame (along with ranfurly with the 440ml cans) was all about value. Even then I knew that it tasted like shark.

But in hindsight if my goal was just to get drunk cheapily I should have been buying cask wine.
