I THINK, from my small knowledge of the treaty, it kind of helped Pakeha more than Maori from the crap translation. It gave the crown sovereignty over everything, and gave Pakeha privileges that Maori didn't get to receive, saying that they both have the same rights, but Pakeha only got the privileges.
Something like that, I studied at some point in my life.

how about..
"Waitangi day is just a/another day for Maori to make money"
Are you trying to be PC, dan?
I don't care for Waitangi day much. Especially when you get people attacking politicians shouting "Give us our land back!"
Waitangi day doesn't really feel like a day to celebrate anyway if you think of what it was really about.
We need a New Zealand Day, that way we can celebrate being New Zealanders.
Sounds better than... "A day to celebrate the signing of a treaty between New Zealand Iwi and the Queen in which Maori agree to hand over most of their land"
Yay! How fun is that!!
Ive never felt like Waitangi day is a very important day. My guess is that most of New Zealand only sees it as another day off. Except to some Maori and Politicians.
News coverage seems to only be Politicians meeting with Iwi at a tribe, a bit of angst between Maori and Politicians, and "Distinguished guests".
Call me racist, But when I am stopped from exploring my own country (Beaches, mountains and buses) I lose respect for the local Iwi, politics and if it has anything to do with it, The treaty of Waitingi. Im not going to pay a "Koha" to walk through a part of bush your ancestor used to have reign over. I bet he didn't charge people to be there. Same with beaches, Nobody should own a part of the Natural NZ coastline. You didn't own it, your ancestors just lived there.
I say all this because I have been stopped from going places because the land is "Maori Owned". And it f**ks me off.
Dont get me wrong. I dont hate Maori, some of my best friends are Maori.
Its just that the ones who do those things really piss me off.
Im not sure what I was really trying to say there.Stefan2011-02-02 22:04:38

Haha. But seriously, who cares? It's just another day off. The only people who care massively about this are some Maori (like, the militant ones) and politicians trying to curry favour with the Maori vote.
Just come out and say it... Go on...
Please, discuss.

You do realise their land was stolen, right? and the money being paid out via the waitangi tribunal is less than 10% of the value. I'd imagine you'd be pretty pissed if I came along to your place and took 98% of your possessions.
and explain to me what PC is? Generally it is used by people who are ill informed, so the use as soon as someone disagrees with them, because they have no logical argument.

You don't have to 'celebrate' it. But if you forget the past, you are bound to repeat the mistakes made in the past.
It is probably the biggest day in NZ's history. If that doesn't deserve to be a public day, we may not have any at all.

Um, plenty of non-maori own land near beaches that prevent people from going on it. Are you equally f**ked off?

You can all laugh at me, but dale was the only one who said anything. I respect that.
I didn't see anything from anyone else..
You do realise their land was stolen, right?
How much though? And what parts? The treaty prevented the sale of any land to anyone other than the crown or whatever. And Maori were happy to sell their land. I understand there were dodgy dealings after some time.
I know, Ive been told I am Un-PC before in conversations.
To me, Being PC is keeping comments or views that could be considered imflamatory, racist or generally rude behind a sort of 'safety sheild'.

I dont disagree with it. But my point is that it is not a day that everybody really understands, It deserves a public holiday. But I feel that it shouldn't really be seen as a day to celebrate being a Kiwi, Because of that exact point.
People's knowledge of what it is about is very limited. And that crosses different generations. I think people know that it is an important part of NZ History, but they just don't really care.
=2ndBest] Um, plenty of non-maori own land near beaches that prevent people from going on it. Are you equally f**ked off?
From my experiences. I have never been effected by non-maori land owners.
But yes, I am. But there is a difference between non-maori owning land near beaches, and Maori who control all of the beach, including the foreshore, beach, and land around that beach.
As ive said, my knowledge is limited to a bit here and there at school.
You seem to know what you are on about, If you could tell people here what it is about in simple terms. That would be much appreciated.
Stefan2011-02-02 23:03:44
That's just not how the game works.
If Maori want to control land fine, I couldn't care less. But the second access and usage becomes what colour you are I get pretty pissed off, especially when the next gasp of air is a rant about how they're so marginalised.
If they want me to throw a leaf in the river before I kayak down it, fine, (true story) I couldn't care less either. But when a group of them show up in 4WDs and start threatening an innocent group who haven't done any damage, (another true story) but are instead observing and appreciating the land that also makes me pretty pissed off.
One last thing, the government is supposed to represent all of us. So Maori shouldn't really have a problem with any land that isn't privately owned/developed etc.Michael2011-02-02 22:59:32
