Does anyone else think its weird that a South African is our flagbearer? Yes, I know she's lived here since 1999.

Yes. 100% yes.

Three for me, and two for them.

Totally.

As soon as I read that I thought that was odd.

That being said, the criterion for entering Euro 2012 is far less arbitrary than the criterion for entering Delhi 2010 (in my personal opinion). Regional tournaments make sense and have value, rather than tournaments based on membership of a sociopolitical group with a partially-applied historical basis.

Less, but still slightly so. Israel and Kazakhstan are UEFA members but have 100% of their land area in Asia. Turkey is also a UEFA member and has only 3% of its territory in Europe. In any case the Commonwealth is pretty clearly defined, though that's just personal opinion I guess.

While not geologically accurate, they're still part of a contiguous region - with the exception of Israel but that's hardly the fault of either UEFA or the IFA. Does it affect the "purity" of it? Yes. It's not a pure competition for the European region, but it's still a regional competition.

The Commonwealth is not a region. It's a group of loosely connected states with no contiguous regional boundary. Membership is indeed clearly defined, but the definition doesn't personally hold any importance to me. Why should I care about a sporting events only contested by nations that are part of a trade group?

I wouldn't call the Commonwealth a "trade group." That may be one of the purposes the Commonwealth serves, but not the only one. The member nations all have a common tie as well, that is some connection with England. Some of the ties are just looser than others.

Fair call, it wasn't the most accurate description

[QUOTE=Tricia McMillan] The member nations all have a common tie as well, that is some connection with England. Some of the ties are just looser than others.

Mozambique and Rwanda are members with no connection to England. Samoa? Loose connection. Rwanda? None. If it were strictly members of the former British Empire I might value it a bit higher.

Regardless, I have no problem with events based off non-regional criteria for eligibility. My initial point was that due to ineligibility, especially based off what I see as an arbitrary criterion, I value the CWG less than other tournaments. I'll still try and catch some of it because I like sport, I just won't overstate the importance of it.

I have to admit I had viewd the Commonwealth as an anachronistic organisation.

After reading Wiki, I'm not any wiser. My conclusion is that (apart from calling Embassies "High Commissions") it is an organisation that only continues to exist so that we can have the Commonwealth Games and most countries can therefore win more medals than at the Olympics, and everybody can feel jolly proud of themselves.

Terribly British.

I know, I know, its serious!

They should hold a Commonwealth soccer tournament so England can actually win something.

This is true, England would be horribly defensive all tournament, one of their knockout games would be 0-0 after 120 minutes and they'd lose on penalties.

Burmester misses out on his Butterfly final. He hasn't quite been the same since the swimming suit change.

Also good to see us rack up a couple of fourths on opening night. In Melbourne 4-years ago we must have finished 4th in about 10 events. It all got slightly ridiculous.

Hoping Sam Bewley goes well in the Individual and Team Pursuit over the next couple of days!

And FOTC. NZs 4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.

Three for me, and two for them.

Ramone Mckenzie isn't even that great, the mask is cool, but his PB is only 10.35sec The athletes in the track events are mediocre at best. Dexter Lee from Jamaica won the IAAF world juniors this year, and even he's too good for this competition, not to mention Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Michael Frater who were all in the 100m final at the Olympics. I'd be very surprised if someone runs under 10 seconds, and if they don't run under 10.16 then they'd be slower than the world junior time.Luis Garcia2010-10-07 21:18:17

I was watching some of the womens hockey today. Austrlia v India. I kid you not, theres an Aussie chick who's name is Hollywood. Couldn't see if there was an Indian one called Bollywood.

I was also thinking, if Phoenix fans are Yellow Fever, I wonder if there is an Indian football team with a fan base called Dehli Belly??

Valerie Adams should win our 2nd. She'll probably only need one throw. Gooner 4 Life2010-10-09 13:11:16

was a great night last night, I think we picked up a gold, 5 silvers and 3 bronze. Adams will definitely bring home another gold, maybe the sevens team too.

Just shows that they win so many medals that they can afford to give a few away.
