FT's Wormfarm thread

I've just started my worm farm, I have a three layer container, only using 2 at the mo until the worms start getting into it.

I have Tiger worms, the big one is called King Chomp the Mighty and his minions are the Chompians. The farm is called Chompopolis. I am their god and I am a merciful god.

My bedding was a mix cut up and moistened cardboard, coconut husk that came with the farm and some  leaves that I've not got around to sweeping up from the patio. I also added unsold cut up yellow fever t-shirts, this may or may not be true.

I've put in a pint glass of bokashi'd kitchen waste, which I've stored for about  four weeks now. Covered over the bedding with a sheet of damp cardboard and put the lid on.

I'm currently struggling not to go and open the lid to see how they are doing and let the Chompians settle in.

I've had a quick look and added so more rotting leaves as bedding and some of the worms are charging around  whist the rest are still all wrapped up together, like a bunch of hippies in a love in or a bunch of german actors and actresses in certain films... ForteanTimes2009-09-25 16:48:11

I might play them some music, what do you reckon, something soothing like Kate Bush or punk like the Dead Kennedys?

You could always play a recording of Prince Charles talking. Good enough for plants, good enough for worms.

if you cut them all in half, you will have twice as many worms.  A good way to double your production and profits.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Some Wiggles songs would get them going - begging to be cut in half I'd say.

Tsk* The sort of thing I would expect from a non-vermicomposter :

http://www.wormfarmingsecrets.com/members/general-worm-composting/the-myth-of-cutting-a-worm-in-half

All you'll get is short Chompians and rotting parts .

Well I had a look today and I've been surprised at the amount of nosh they've scoffed overnight. I've also been reluctant to add to much Bokashi as I heard it can turn the farm "sour". So today I've added half and half, (half normal untreated kitchen waste and half bokashi), and gave them some extra teabags, a little pizza crust too for doing so well on there first day!

On a darker note we've had our first casualty. A small Chompian was found dead (why do the good die young?), I've left him there with his friends as no doubt the others will end up eating him as they are an unsentimental bunch.

Pics to follow at some point.

Grrr the wife is watching Australian Idol so all they are getting is Brian McFadden at the mo, (Chompopolis is just outside the back door which is open).

I'm gonna have to name our three tiered effort now - sadly I think all our Tigers drowned in juice (not citric, of course - but a bad ending nevertheless).

If this was serious thread, I would recommend putting the fruit and veggie peelings in the food processor and chopping them into tiny bits as this cuts down on the presence of fruit/vinegar fly during the summer months.

I'm slightly disappointed!

Cool photos. So the Tiger worms are hull City fans? What's the name of that crab type thing? I've seen them on the Discovery channel but can't remember their name.

Yeah I'm not looking forward to the fruit fly invasion, that's what I love about bokashi, it keeps the tiny monsters away. But then bokashi has it's detractors with causing too much acidity but cuts down on the fruit fly invasion. It's a learning experience and I'm glad of the coolish weather we are having.

Species-ist more like.

So anyway are your worms the Bengal or the Siberian kind. And have the older ones got a craving for human flesh since they can't bring down fleet-footed forest dwelling animals anymore?

You appear to be the Percy Thrower amongst us with that comment. What next, a thread dedicated to your new Italian Sunken Garden and the list of professional footballers who claim to have vandalised it?

I'm slightly disappointed!

RIP

I built up a strong affinity with tiger worms when I was in the worm re-homing business a few years back, still shed a tear when one moves on to the other side, life goes on.

Worm re-homing business???

Did they come from broken homes where the little worms were given the bash (or "slug" in worm parlance) by the older ones? Or did the Tiger worms fall behind on their mortgage ("sorry no cash this week but how about some lovely casts?")?

Fourtean, have you thought of plinking a couple of containers of Home brew sealed in there. The warm generated by the compost will increase it's maturity rate.

Leave the cap off and you could have a home brew worm (Tequila style).
