I read in the latest issue (1 April) of Citylife South & East Edition an article regarding some Hurricane supporters have starting a supporters club along the lines of Yellow Fever.  They call themselves Citizen Cane.  They even have T-shirts printed.  One of the founders was quoted by the local rag as saying, we wanted to do for the Hurricanes what Yellow Fever were doing so well for the Phoenix.  The article continues to say that, While the membership of around 60 is a long way off the Yellow Fever numbers, the Citizen Canes make up for it with dedicated enthusiasm before & after the game at Thorndons Thistle Inn & in Aisle 2 at the Stadium.  They even have a website which I have not seen.

I cant imagine what their chanting & singing be likeHurricanesHurricanes.  Doesnt work.  Ive gone along to the Stadium & watch a few Canes games, but after watching my first Nix game against Adelaide last year, I was hooked.  Cant wait for season 2.

Oh please.  No one likes copy cats.  Actually, does rugby union have an original cell in its body?

I can proudly say I've only ever gone (I didn't pay - a freebie) to one rugby match in my life (Hurricans V Chiefs, 1997, P.N).  Enthralling.  Awesome.  A spectacle.

I went home at half time.

Spose they can always try and emulate YF.

Three for me, and two for them.

Seems they are Phoenix fans also. Good on them for trying. Won't amount to anything though.

Yeah good on them for trying to change crowd's. Hurricanes ain't gonna win though, team is overrated especially Mr Smith in the 13.

YF should book out Aisle 21 at the next Canes game & show the crowd what support really is.

I don't blame the rugby supporters from sitting rather than standing and chanting.  If I paid as much as they do for a season ticket, I'd want to get my moneys worth from my seat too.

This rugby bitching is getting so boring.

Has anyone else mentioned that they had more than 30,000 people to the game last week? No, no one has said a word, and when they get 15000 we get about 3 threads saying how rugby is dead.

Honestly, get over it.

I haven't posted it on here Harry, but I've certainly said to people over the weekend that it was an impressive number.

Don't let a few miserables get you down... give that Hurricanes 'involved' acquaintance of yours a well done for the crowd for me.

too right harry. i was at the game on friday night and thought it was a great crowd. too bad the hurricanes play dumb and the crusaders are so clinical theyre excruciatingly boring. for me even a phoenix game is yet to match the atmosphere from  the semifinal v the tahs a couple of years ago. that was amazing.
in regards to citizen cane, we were sitting just along from them. there was a guy with a drum which i thought was cool but he was just banging away without anything else coordinated going with it. good luck to them and well done for showing the initiative to set it up

I certainly wasn't bagging rugby attendances.  It was great that they got 30k, it was to be expected for that game (maybe 20k for other other teams).  I put up the discussion of the for- mation of a Canes supporters club along the lines of YF & the comparison between the atmospere of a Canes game vs a Nix game.

dont you think its a bit sad though - that the team has been around to support for over a decade - and now they start trying to replicate another sport?

Yeah, I didnt know they were trying to rip off YF and I thought it was all good, but for a member of the group to say they are trying to be like the Fever its pretty dumb of him.

the hurricanes of '97 were an awesome team, most of their games (bar the first two defeats) were exciting matches. they averaged like 38 points a game. some memerable games were the 64-32 drubbing of the bulls in new plymouth, the 45-42 loss to the blues, the 59-30 hammering of free state and the 60-34 win over the highlanders.

a truly entertaining and successful season. i wouldn't even go to a hurricanes game now such is the low standard of their (and all the teams in genera) play but you're way off the mark saying the hurricanes were a boring team in '97.

the new rules seem to make the game a little too fast for the canes to handle (IMO)all those quick freekicks and stuff caught them out, that crusaders pack was pretty tight on friday but the canes looked out of their depth  again (IMO) our forward pack took a hammering

as for dumb hurricanes what are you refering too? if it was kicking the ball out on fulltime i thought seeing as they were going backwards keeping the bonus point was a safer option for the points tally rather than give up a dumb penalty and lose that point - again (IMO)

and good on the citizen canes  good luck to them.

Ohhh yeah I never thought of kicking it out as a way to get the bonus point.

Pretty smart when I think of it now.

i didnt mean the kicking it out no. i was screaming at them to kick it out, only smart play. dumb is in reference to the game plan and the way collins and soialo played. no structure all night. not how you beat the crusaders

Good to see them finally form a supporters group as such, Shame it wasn't running when the Cane's kicked off and that it's taken over 10 years to happen. But started they have and I wish them well. I try to go to Canes games, but i can assure you that 10k of Nix fans certainly make more noise than 34,500 Canes fans. Still they may yet convert to singing songs rather than that overloud and very annoying music during breaks in play. They must have a cd that they use every year as it's the same matierial EVERY game!

But LG...that outrageously loud music makes the atmosphere...all the drunks sing along to "why does love do this to me" over and over, and everyone goes home happy. (semi-sarcasm..)

But yeah was sad i had work on the weekend so couldnt go to the crusaders game, would have been a good one...must try to make it to at least one game this season!

I had a chat with one of the citizen cane guys at the Thistle after last Friday's game.
Nice chap - a little under the influence, so his thoughts may be a little off....-

I asked him where they got the idea from.
He advised it was from YF, who he feels are fantastic

Asked if he'd been to any Phoenix games
He said yep - most of them - he went on to say its all about supporting Wellington - regardless of code

Apparently the citizen canes people asked the WRFU for a place they could go to stand up and make noise during games (they were annoying old school rugby followers who like to sit quietly watching the game).

The WRFU gave them the area in aisle 2.

Good on them, and may they flourish.................

Doesn't matter where they get the inspiration from, they've seen that having a great atmosphere at a NZ sporting fixture is possible. Good on them for having the 'nads to admit that they can do it better. They should be encouraged,  rather than used as an excuse for us to indulge in a bit of rugby bashing.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Speaking of which, does anyone else think how stupid is that you get a point for losing? If you lose by 7 or 70, you still lost. You still failed to score more points than the opposition. Why should you get rewarded because you only just lost.
If that rule wasn't in place, the Hurricanes may have played on looking for the try and draw the match but instead they (due to the rules) are better off to admit defeat and get 1 point.
