I dunno who's wife Franky has shagged but he should be included in the ODI squad, that's ridiculous.

Mills, still?

Oram, still?

Am stoked to see Latham and Nathula in there, two big talents.

Don't worry, Oram will injure himself and Franklin will get called up

For one Bates is a bowler, the other two batsmen. Agree though Franklin should be in, surprised Watling isn't in the squad too.

It's just a disgrace though. Makes me think it's the boys club filling up the back seats of the bus.

Meanwhile, all our bowlers are contributing to the Zimbabwe slaughter.

Southee could do with a few cheap wickets. 16 tests and his bowling average is still over 40

Can anyone remember the last time we won two tests in a row? Granted Zimbabwe have been awful, but the future is looking good for our test side. The commentators keep going on about the balance of the current lineup being great and I'd have to say it is, especially with Watling at 7,and a bowling attack of 4 seamers (who all have different styles including a lefty) and Vettori. Even McCullum opening has a better average than he did batting down the order. The SA tour will be interesting... I don't know if we can beat them but I wouldn't put it past us

I don't think I have ever seen a test side bowled out twice in a day before.

That was just disgraceful.

Absolutely Bizarre, given how close the test match in Zimbabwe. I'm not saying we shouldn't have won comfortably but.... 194/20?

According to Cricinfo its only the third time its happened, the previous occurrences Zimbabwe against us in 2005 and India against England in 1952.

I see that the poms also had a bad day. Maybe a tri-series of England, India and Zimbabwe would be a good idea?

Attended a great game of one-day cricket yesterday, 294 played 288, and Nathan McCullum went bonkers (90 from 43), yet it was nearly chased down.

For a day's entertainment, one-day cricket is pretty good value

Seems like a lot of people are just blaming Zimbabwe's ineptitude for the result without givibng any credit to the Black Caps (I don't mean on here, just around town and the internet in general). While they were undeniably awful, have people forgotten that we beat an Aussie side in Australia recently, and that Aussie side went on to win 4 tests against India? Give our boys a bit of credit!

On another note, how about that English collapse against Pakistan?

To be fair, Zimbabwe were awful. A club side could have put up more fight than that.

NZ did bowl very very well. They would have gone through much better international teams with a day of bowling like that.

I was away over the weekend, but watched the highlights last night, and some of that batting was just plain disgraceful at test match level. Playing all round straight ones, and wafting the bat outside off.
But our bowlers do deserve some credit for putting it in the right areas.

JD Ryder      96      67      81      11      5

JEC Franklin      9.3     0     46     5     0     1

Discussion points given the exclusion of both players for the Zimbabwe tour.

Jesse I can understand, get time in the middle under the belt etc etc needs to prove himself/his fitness again.

Franklin, still just baffles me.

Will be frustrating if the new guys that come in don't perform and we have the likes of Franklin repeatedly making a joke of our domestic competition.

Franklin averaged 50 in odi's last year, best NZ batsman, yet forget Oram, even Andy Ellis is in ahead of him

Yep Andy Ellis is probably even more obscure. What's worse is that he'll probably be made to look good by Zimbabwe. Didn't Franklin score runs overseas last year? He'll be spewing.

Agreed, I have doubts about Nethula, and serious doubts about Bates and Ellis in the odi format. And we may be tossing in Latham too early. But what I fear the most is the Zimbos making them look world-beaters then us retaining the same team against South Africa

The problem with Franky for me is he is a 4/5 in ODI Cricket, where do you fit him in the current team if everyone is fit?

Ryder, McCullum, Guptill, Nicol - are the four of them fighting for 3 spots or do you pick all four of them?

The answer to that question then determines what you do with your middle order. Taylor is a must pick and presumably bats 4. I think they will continue to pick Williamson but where you bat him largely is largely determined by what you are doing at the top.

I would pick all four of that first group plus Taylor and Williamson which doesn't leave much space for Franky because I don't think he is suited to batting 6 or 7 as he takes a while to get in.

Personally, I would have slotted Franko into Taylors spot for this series but I also really like De Grandhomme and am glad he is getting the chance.

I wouldn't go anywhere near Ellis, Oram they are picking as a bowler to bat 8 or 9 I think.

My top ODI team would be this

Nicol, Guptill, Ryder, Taylor, Williamson, McCullum, McCullum, Oram, Southee, Bracewell, ?.

I doubt that would be the team they would pick as McCullum will probably open but that's what I would pick.

I would have Watling, while it's nice to have 2 openers who smash it, a guy who can get a 100 off 110 balls and hold the innings around him is really valuable.

But I'd also have no probs with any of Nicol/Baz/Gup/Ryder, but I don't think Nicol's bowling will be much of an asset

Well that's my point about Ellis vs Franky, Ellis isn't in the picture for me. Franky's five fa today will have raised an eye brow or two particularly if you're thinking Oram vs Franky. Franky scores loads more runs.

Good point re Waitling, but thats the role I would envisage Williamson playing. I'm not sure you would want them both in there? Isn't it nice to have some actual depth, to have to leave out good cricketers?!

But if you are experimenting, why bring Franky back. You know what he can do. Give Ellis a run, see what he has.

When was the last time Franky bowled like that and had they just transplanted the Hobart test wicket?

This is Kane Williamson at 3 for me. It would be ideal if he developed in to a good first drop and played that roll. I like Guptill/Ryder and McCullum at the top who put a lot of pressure on the opposition bowlers, Kane can play the role you're talking about if that doesn't come off.

This is an interesting debate, been awhile since we had two and sometimes three players who can play in most positions. Finding the right balance along with establishing our game plan is the key.

I wouldn't take Williamson in the ODI team. That leaves Franklin at 5, hopefully not needing to bowl (Nicol can be your 6th bowler if needed). Agree with B McCullum at 6, I think he is still the best ODI closer we have, but also agree that he will in all likelihood open.

Edit: just looked at Williamson's stats on cricinfo and they are actually a LOT better than I thought they were. So having said that, I would play him, (which is back to leaving Franky out again! ), but he has to bat at three. I don't like him down at 5 or 6 as he really does need time to build an innings, so if we are going well and we get to 35-40 overs 3 down, do we really want him coming out to bat.aitkenmike2012-02-01 21:25:47
