I'm gutted I missed it, I just looked on cricinfo this morning and saw the result. Hopefully the Black Caps can do something similar to the Saffers tonight!

Obviously he needs to be punished for breaking team protocols (like Bracewell) and a little bit more for repeat offending, but seriously, people are talking about him losing his contract. What did he do that was so wrong. He had a beer (again, I understand against rules, so punish him for this) and abused some (probable) knob who thought he was tough and gave him sh*t. He's no Zac Guildford - and didn't Zac only get a one game ban?aitkenmike2012-03-02 07:59:18

And a one game ban it is. Plus dropped for the tests for form issues. Fair enough maybe. Hope he gets runs for Wellington before the 2nd test side is named, because I think we need him.aitkenmike2012-03-02 08:57:31

No Brownlie and no Ryder in test squad - does that mean Nicol gets a chance?

Guptill, McCullum, Williamson, Taylor, (?), Vettori, Waitling, Southee, Bracewell, Boult and Martin.

Van Wyk? Did I hear Watling is injured?

Am I missing something? I really don't see what the selectors see in Andrew Ellis. Personally I think Franklin>Ellis, but even without my Franky love, I just don't see a role for Ellis in a test side.

I guess Ellis fills the all-rounder spot that Wells did in that last squad. I'm with you though, Franky a much better bet. That was tough for me to say as I am well known as being pretty anti-Franko.

I guess Nicol/Williamson bat 3/5 and the rest of the team stays as is.

Ellis as an all-rounder is a stupid choice, really hope he doesn't play. As for Nicol, he averages 28 in the Plunket Shield this year, AND is going to be batting in an unfamiliar role.

I would have had Kruger as next cab off the rank, keeping or not.

Although I believe BA is the 5th choice test seamer in the country, I don't really see why he's been included. Will hurt ND again :/

It's amazing how quickly we've gone from having too many players to fit in the team, to umm... who can we get to play at 5?
And in response to someone earlier, I read somewhere that Watling has a groin injury.

The bottom line is, we'll get hammered regardless of who we play, so I'm choosing not to get angsty about it.

the f**ked up thing is, i read some sh*t about a new selection policy with all this carry on about stats etc, i would love to see how it applies to ellis and possibly even rob nicol (in the long form)

In regards to the Jesse/Doug "incident" I'm far more f**ked off at the w**ker who thought he was within his rights to approach these guys and tell them what they should and shouldn't be doing. You can bet that he wouldn't have been polite about it, anyone would have told him to jog on.

Also, if Doug was under an injury cloud in Napier why did NZC let him drink in the corporate area at McLean Park where they could all see it happening?

I'm not defending these guys because they know the rules but I think it could have been dealt with better.

While it's pretty painful to watch us at the moment, Craig McMillan makes it 10x more so. Can't stand him.

Agreed on McMillian. On the test side, given the choice of Nicol and Ryder at 5 in a test side, I would take Ryder every day of the week, drinking or not.

Just got home from the game. Wow was I so bored

The Wellington game was boring as bat sh*t too. Notice the chasing side won every limited overs game in the tour (except the cantab tour match), only once being us. We're a better chasing side and they knew it. Their bowling attack is also miles better than ours which made life tough for us setting targets and it was a walk in the park for their top order to chase.

In hindsight I agree with what others said pre tour that it should have been tests first, ODIs then T20s. The ODIs were fizzers. TopLeft072012-03-04 00:11:57

Agreed about the patron.

"I would have thought after being caned as they were by South Africa, Ryder would have been in his hotel room looking up at the ceiling wondering how on earth they got beaten and what he could do to avoid another loss like that," said Brendon Arkwright.

"I don't mind Ryder, or any player, having a drink after a game but I just thought it was inappropriate when you are playing for your country and your team has a loss and you decide to go to a bar and celebrate.

"In my view they were not respecting the Silver Fern.

What world does he live in?

Ryder has been treading a fine line for a while though (Think we've talked about this during the firebirds season even). Hopefully this will cause him to work harder rather than say "screw it" and just give up. Could go either way.

stupid rain. any word on how delayed the start will be?

Coverage starts again at 1.05pm I think. They will be trying to dry the outfield I imagine so it depends how much rain fell last night, I don't think the drainage down there is great.

Or maybe it is....

The rain has stopped in Dunedin, but the umpires have decided to take an early lunch in the first New Zealand-South Africa test.

Lunch will; be taken at midday instead of 12.30, but play looks unlikely to start after lunch at 12.40.

The forecast for this afternoon is better and ground staff are confident the University Oval will drain quickly.

They have been coring the ground in the wettest spots this morning and the covers are still on the block and the bowlers' run-ups.

Ther has not been a toss yet and neither team have named their playing XIs.

1st ball of real test cricket for the summer

Not much swing about in the first couple of overs. We will struggle if this continues for the rest of the day. I was hoping Martin's typical hooping outswing to the lefties would trouble Smith early.
