I doubt that would be the team they would pick as McCullum will probably open but that's what I would pick.

It's quite funny the battle that Channel 9 are having with Fox Sports in regards to the hype and technology in T20s. They're trying to do what Americans do with their sports. OTT.

Does anyone else get the feeling that they're using the Zimbo series as a bit of a trial for some of these player (e.g. Ellis, Bates, Latham etc). On form you'd have to be picking Franklin, and even McKay, but they already know what they can do, so as someone said above are giving a few others a shot at the big time.
Not that I agree with that strategy... but that's how it appears to me.

I wouldn't take Williamson in the ODI team. That leaves Franklin at 5, hopefully not needing to bowl (Nicol can be your 6th bowler if needed). Agree with B McCullum at 6, I think he is still the best ODI closer we have, but also agree that he will in all likelihood open.

Edit: just looked at Williamson's stats on cricinfo and they are actually a LOT better than I thought they were. So having said that, I would play him, (which is back to leaving Franky out again! ), but he has to bat at three. I don't like him down at 5 or 6 as he really does need time to build an innings, so if we are going well and we get to 35-40 overs 3 down, do we really want him coming out to bat.

Kane averages 61 in domestic od's, so yes, I agree with your edit :). Definitely not a 6-7 batsman though, definitely has to build his innings.

I find it interesting we've put him in the t20 team, must be as a specialist bowler

Yes- yes it does. Had completely forgotten about Millsy.

Only concern then would be the sameness of our attack. Maybe Boulty floating about as well?

Wow, that is some VERY green grass on that pitch. Still a bit of length too. The ball could zip around for the first 25-30 overs with two new balls and that amount of grass protecting the ball!

So is the wicket doing a bit, or are we just rubbish?

Guessing both...

Nicol got bogged down with bowler hitting a length and moving it away, chased at one that wasn't quite there to drive.

McCullum picked an outswinger as he had been taking it away, and it just nipped back in.

Good bowling on a green and helpful track, with some slightly poor (in hindsight) shot selection more than awful batting.

LOL, Williamson just got away with a HUGE glove down the leg side which the Zimbabweans decided not to challenge.

heh heh, "Meth"

What an awesome surname. It allows for headlines like "Meth included in Zimbabwe T20 squad" Thought that their bowlers might have had a bit more pace then...

oh right, this is an ODI not a T20.

At first, I thought 250 was chaseable, then I remembered it was at University Oval. I'll take the win, nothing wrong with the performance

Soooooo.....

Just getting everyone's hopes up for South Africa to crush them?

I suppose you can only beat what's in front of you, and we smashed them. Nethula's not up to it yet

Nethula gets a lot of good press, but I just don't see it.

It would probably be fair to judge him after he bowls on something that isn't flat and grassy. He's good in the domestic comps and they're trying to find a spinner who can perform on the international stage so all they can do is try the best around. This whole Zimbabwe tour is looking like a trial tour for about half the players included. So it's a bit of a joke and we're still rolling them.

Went to the game today, was very enjoyable, mainly for New Zealand's innings. IMO Nethula didn't do that great. I thought Oram was unlucky to not get MOTM but it was still a very good performance from Nicol.

Got time off work today so i can go to the entirety of the Test vs South Africa in Hamilton. I cant wait. The missus cant quite fathom why i would use my days off to go to cricket, test match cricket at that. For me though there is little more enjoyable things than relaxing on the grass bank watching test match cricket.

Good on you mate, wish I could do the same.

Tell your missus to take a gamble and take the last two days off in the likely case it only goes for three and a half days. If it goes five she could just go shopping.

I hope to be there for all five (unless one day is a saturday) aswell, the prices this season actually make it possible. It will depend on how many lectures I choose to miss.

Sadly Steyn and Philander make that a distinct possibility.

Guppy currently with the 2nd highest NZ batting average in ODI's at 39.54.

I like trawling through page after page of cricket stats on cricinfo.

Nicol is averaging 69.25 at the moment! Although I assume you have a minimum number of games in mind. Who's number one? Martin Crowe would be my guess

Yea you got to have played 20 innings. Glenn Turner is first with an average of 47. Interesting Roger Twose is third on the list.

Interesting list. Twose had 20 50s too? I though he was good but not one of our all time best. I thought Astle's average would have been better tbh. And Grant Elliott and Peter Fulton have better averages than Styris or Fleming too, which seems odd.

I wonder if the fact that 3 of the top 6 are current players is a reflection on the quality of our current ODI squad or simply because they have played in this era of big bats and power plays. Maybe a bit of both.

Ahhhh there's something soothing about looking at cricket stats

Roger Twose is still a bit under-rated imo. I'd have him in my middle order over any of the current crop.
Astle still has double the # of 100s than anyone else. In fact no-one else makes 10. A bit sad that. Although probably helped that he always opened.

Also very surprised that Crowe only got 4 100s. His conversion rate is worse than Flems! I guess he usually came in at #4 though.

i'll pop down on the weekend if it goes into a 3rd day, unless there is free entry after tea I'll miss days 1-2 and (unlikely) 5. May have to do the ol' hidden earphones under the jersey trick in class for them.

Don't think anyone who remembers Roger underates him- it's just that everyone else he played with was generally kack and we didn't win many.

Darn didnt quite make it. Last 5 ODI scores are 74, 105, 70, 77 and 85. Not bad reading, although all 5 are against the Zimmos.

The issue for the Nicol/Guptill partnership will come when they aren't getting 1 or 2 bad balls an over. Neither of them seem to be single hitters to me so they will have to start manufacturing against the good teams to score runs.

T20s against Zimbabwe. I couldn't be less interested if i tried.

Three for me, and two for them.

T20's when they are close can be entertaining, I remember a game at Westpac against India where we needed a run off the last ball to win. But apart from that, they are a borefest.
