National Treasures UK and NZ

The experts at More In Common surveyed the British people to find out who you consider your most cherished celebrities. As discussed on the show, the top five were David Attenborough (82% said he's a national treasure), Judi Dench (68%), Elton John (59%), Paul McCartney (58%), and Joanna Lumley (56%).

I guess this is another way to look at what I was saying when I got offside with Napier. What’s the soul of NZ? What matters to us?

Or to put it another way- who are our national treasures? I’m not sure I can think of one, because things are so politicised and people who might be beloved by everyone ‘belong’ to one side or the other. McCaw or Carter are close to the rural National party. Don McGlashin or the Finn brothers often promote a bit of te reo which is now not our usp, but a major crime apparently and are a bit leftie.

Perhaps social media means we dig over or care what people who are not part of any campaign or anything might have said at the pub or a party and left there. Or perhaps causes are quicker to grab famous people. I don’t know.

The idea that a newsreader would become a politician or a political figure or that the 6pm news itself was political rather than reporting on politics would have seemed a bit strange.

Any thoughts for who might be a Kiwi national treasure?

We don’t have telethons anymore. Or shows that the whole country tunes into on the TV.

Richard Hadlee is a possibility, but he has avoided the limelight and isn’t particularly charismatic! Peter Jackson was headed that way, but got involved in a few controversial things, despite some public minded works and an early strong record of bringing his success home and sharing it.

Siouxsie Wiles also dedicated to her work and well received in places lost fans in others. Karl Urban and others are off overseas. Cat Wilson at first and now Mel Bracewell went to Oz.

Maybe Ashley Bloomfield as one? And maybe…Guy Montgomery? He seems too young, but of the type of humour that includes people.

Got to be living right?

Three other candidates:

Kane - just saying his first name most kiwis would know and all of India would.

i don’t think any person would dislike that guy and my god his batting should be treasured as we won’t see that again.

Would be loved by grandmas.

Jacinda - likewise in NZ, maybe not in India.

Probably disliked by a few rednecks and anti vaxxs. Tough for a politician to be considered a national treasure, with usually 50 per cent of the country disliking you  but she’s the only one I can think off who should be in consideration.

Steven Adam’s - don’t follow basketball but this guy seems a good sort and represents NZ well.

Auckland will rise once more

Jacinda is still popular, but viscerally hated by some. Yeh, unlikely to be a politician you’d think, sadly.

Yeh the Adams seem to be a good fit.

It’s hard to say Nelsen or Snell. I thought about Snell and Lydiard. But Sir Arthur has passed on. Or Wynton? And most of the TeamNZ yachtees have done their chips compared to Sir Peter!

In the UK there’s instantly people who are beyond reproach. Here I’m not so sure.

Sir David Kirk has been involved broadly and like Jackson sacrificed a bit to remain involved in NZ.

Kane’s an interesting one. Still playing. Not an ego like BMac. Think Fleming is well known in India too? And Lucas? Even a lad like James Pamment! Former soccer goalkeeper!

Chris Wood if he keeps his nose clean.

I feel like there has to be more than just being a success. There’s got to be an aspect of respect and service or representation I feel…

Quite a lot of actors, comedians and television personalities on that list.

Ian Mune was very famous, but has perhaps receded!

Sam Neill has to be one. Robyn Malcolm? Michael Galvin?
Lucy Lawless?

Maurice Gee sadly passed last year. In his mid-90s!

Joy Cowley still with us though.

And it’s odd- I want to put guys like Roger Donaldson and Andrew Niccol there too. But they’re not embraced by the public you feel. Certainly known and respected in many places. Loved having a Japanese kid whose dad had shown him World’s Fastest Indian talk to me about NZ because of that! But it’s niche, a good niche, but still.

I’m kinda angry at Sir Peter Jackson that he’s not a shoe in. He’s done so much amazing work for New Zealand and about New Zealand. And for Wellington come to that. But also is combative and a company man at times. And perhaps uninterested in that local leadership beyond what he’s already done. He really should be golden.

Should we also include Suzy Cato?

And then guys like Broxh. But again quite niche and not particularly a self promoter. Or Viva La Dirt League.
But these guys belong to their communities which are not national ones. Even if they pay tax here. 🫡

Sir George Henare is another guy like Ian Mune and Roger Donaldson who’s legacy doesn’t feel particularly well known…And guys like Nathaniel Lees, Oscar Kightley…oh yeh Flight of the Conchords and Rhys Darby…

The Christchurch Wizard?

Sam Hunt slipped off the radar but was time he was every where.
He may be gone but John Clarke has to be a shoe in created one of NZs most famous characters in Fred Dagg.

Add Gary McCormick to that?
Simon Barnett?

Simon Barnett - seriously?? He and McCormick are just clowns.
I offer James K Baxter, Howard Morrison as far better treasures.

Hate to update you on what happened to James K Baxter’s public image then…!

Hone Tuwhare had less of an ego.

I dunno. Send in the Clowns! I think we’d have been well and truly out of love with John Lennon by 1990 if he’d survived, let alone what would have happened to him come the me too movement. There’s lots of people such as Roald Dahl, Kenneth Graham and Kurt Vonnegut who treated people in some really crappy ways. It’s something we haven’t resolved in our culture with guys like Louis CK.

McCormick, Hunt, Shadbolt, Bob Harvey are all of a similar kind of clay imo. And we have to mention Barry Crump, if we’re doing tarnished heroes. Taika a bit young yet.

Dame Kiri still beloved? I feel like she might be up there.

Interesting one here. James Belich? Again left the public eye, and moved on from exclusively New Zealand history.

Sir Howard, geez. But yeh, the UK one had the proviso they had to be living. Amazing life.
