Wow that's really sad about Gary Speed. You're right Frankie, he always seemed one of the nice guys in football.

I remember going to the Everton vs Leeds game on the opening day of the 1990-1991 season, after Leeds had just been promoted from Division 2.  Gary Speed played for Leeds and was superb - amazing in the air, winning so many headers despite not being massively tall.

I was also sitting in a garden bar in Chester a couple of years ago and he jogged past.  Still looked amazingly fit despite being retired for a couple of years.

Thought he deserved his own thread. Really cut up about this, but already posted about that elsewhere. RIP Gary.

Three for me, and two for them.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Fantastic player.

Very emotional day in Sao Paulo today, with Corinthians winning the title on the last day, hours after the possibly biggest legend of the club had passed away.

A good range of stories for the Dr on the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/socrates

"That 1982 team are remembered for their extraordinary, almost excessive profusion of midfield talent. Alongside Scrates were the heavenly skills and furious shot of Zico, the sumptuous poise of Paulo Roberto Falco and the elemental drive of Toninho Cerezo. This being Brazil, there were other decent players in the team, notably Jnior, the dynamic left-back, and Eder, a charismatic second striker, who took the eye as Brazil swept past the Soviet Union (2-1), Scotland (4-1) and New Zealand (4-0) in the opening group phase."
Actually more of an attacking left wing who could also run back to help out in defence.

"Scrates was a left-wing intellectual who read Plato and Hobbes as well as his namesake and whose idols were Che Guevara and John Lennon."
No - see above.

I met him at Pukekohe in 2005 and got him to sign a photo of him driving the TKR Commodore that I had taken at the Gold Coast V8's. He asked me about the photo and gladly signed it. One of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Even during the last few weeks when he was still attending the last rounds of the V8 Supercar series, he always had that famous smile. A huge loss. Highly respected by all drivers and teams regardless of whether they were Holden or Ford.

RIP Jason. You will be missed.

Christopher Hitchens

the booze may of addled his brain given his anti-religion fervor and support of the criminal Iraqi occupation but his work on Kissinger remains a high point of political/social writing.

I liked him more as a Trotskyist popinjay despite George G's reservations.

Any well known kiwis close to death at all?
Pollies, muso's or B grade celebs not coping too well?

Scrounging names for my 2012 death list, got Ray Woolf in there.
I put in Chris Knox but I think he could go on for years to be honest.

Is Willi Apiata likely to ever see service in Afghanistan again? Probably not.

I hit the lead in our 2011 comp (for the second time) on the sfcu site thanks to Christopher Hitchens the other day with less than two weeks to go. It's getting tense.
