I remember going to the Everton vs Leeds game on the opening day of the 1990-1991 season, after Leeds had just been promoted from Division 2. Gary Speed played for Leeds and was superb - amazing in the air, winning so many headers despite not being massively tall.

I was also sitting in a garden bar in Chester a couple of years ago and he jogged past. Still looked amazingly fit despite being retired for a couple of years.

I met him at Pukekohe in 2005 and got him to sign a photo of him driving the TKR Commodore that I had taken at the Gold Coast V8's. He asked me about the photo and gladly signed it. One of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Even during the last few weeks when he was still attending the last rounds of the V8 Supercar series, he always had that famous smile. A huge loss. Highly respected by all drivers and teams regardless of whether they were Holden or Ford.

RIP Jason. You will be missed.

Scrounging names for my 2012 death list, got Ray Woolf in there.
I put in Chris Knox but I think he could go on for years to be honest.

Is Willi Apiata likely to ever see service in Afghanistan again? Probably not.

I hit the lead in our 2011 comp (for the second time) on the sfcu site thanks to Christopher Hitchens the other day with less than two weeks to go. It's getting tense.
