You mean like Warner wanting a bigger subsidy, despite saying thier intial decision to look elsewhere was because of the conern of industrial action during the filming.

I'm of the view that Warners were keen to film here before then the industrial sh*tstorm struck, the film got delayed - costing them significantly, and now they've decided to recoup those losses (considering this film has been dogged with delays) by either looking abroad, or getting greater subsidies here. To some extent I really can't blame them. On the other hand I agree a dangerous precedent could be set if the Government bends over backwards for a foreign corporation. Hopefully there's a middle ground found and the film stays here, because that is in everyones' (including Warners and the Unions) best interests.

No one is entirely innocent in this ongoing saga. The unions overplayed their card, the producers engaged in petty games, posturing and name calling with the unions and the studio is now look to exploit the situation. At least the whole thing is keeping me busy at work!

Kinda fked up our reputation for overseas films coming here and that now too. A few have ruined it for many. And, as has been said, don't see the Union as really looking out for the people it says it represents. Plus, they even admitted they want to unionise the whole industry, as opposed to this film. They thought targeting this big film would be a good idea, but now they have potentially ruined the whole NZ film industry.

Never mind the Aussies coming in from nowhere and fking everything up...

Same old Aussies - always trying to unionise the New Zealand film industry!

That's a pretty good summary of the whole sorry story, Footpaul.

Seems remiss not to mention the Government, however, who saw an opportunity to come charging onto the field and crash-tackle the unions, only to get thrown a hospital pass of increased subsidies!

Warners must be loving all this.

Now the Union's have stabbed themselves in the face, Warner Bros are now in a position to milk the situation (fair enough too)

Good work Unions.

I've been reading a few forums about this today and I now know that it's all the fault of foreigners, aussies, bitches, women, unions, Warner Bros, Peter Jackson, actors, technicians, you, me, the dog, the cat...

Before union action: Hobbit was being filmed in NZ.
After union action: Who knows?

Pretty clear who is at fault.

Announcement - Hobbit to be filmed in New Zealand.

Extra tax breaks, labour law changes planned, but a few nice perks in there for New Zealand too. I look forward to getting into the meat of what has been offered.

One premier to be held in New Zealand too!

They were only able to do get the benefits because of the unions. If they'd been no blacklist none of this would have happened.

Well obviously I would prefer it to be filmed here.  I just find it interesting that the unions are coping most of the blame where just about everyone involved f**ked something up.

I'm still of the opinion that any threat of future indutrail problem weren't the main concern of the Warners and co.  They are in a deal with MGM, who are financially up sh*t creek, so want to eek every last drop of money out of the project.  And sure, any industrial problem (which are extremely rare....I can't think of a previous case) would cost money, but subsidies and the exchange rate (massively working against us) I would suggest are much bigger factors.

I just think that Warners and co saw an opportunity and used it as a good excuse to play us for extra money.

Emails undermine studio's claims

Had to scroll through a lot to find this. Through a lot of stuff like the posters in this thread. Oh man the unions.

http://tvnz.co.nz/business-news/union-seeks-pay-parity-nz-qantas-pilots-3564041
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10616878

But Mr Woodward said he believed Qantas was deliberately driving down wages by using its cheaper Jetconnect pilots to fly the less profitable transtasman route.

Offshoots of the airline's no-frills subsidiary, Jetstar, were based in Vietnam, Singapore and New Zealand.

"So Qantas is slowly divesting itself into other entities, other small companies, to fly their routes where they think they can make greater profit margins and pay cheaper wages."

We are a third world country competing on wages with Vietnam. Awesome.

So now like South American dictatorships of the past we pass employment laws to suit US corporations.

Hobbit folk grovel to feudal movie lords

Was a quite nice Labour day weekend here. As Brian Rudman points out, um thanks Mr Parnell and the unions. They're why we don't have a half day on Sunday off.

Everyone looks bad in Hobbit fiasco

Worth reading as a review.

The convoluted beginnings from a journalist, not a spin hack or opinionist
"In his recent review of the Film Commission, Jackson took explicit aim at Treasurys ideological hostility to incentives being offered to major foreign productions, and especially at the deluded belief that major foreign productions will still come here, regardless. This thinking, Jackson said flatly, was wrong. They wont, he warned."

Riiiiiight....cos it was governments that stepped in to give us the holidays, not unions who won it....

Glad we agree on the quality of Chris Greenacre.

What a load of guano Michael.

Well I'm over the moon that some of my hard earned tax dollars are being used to make sure that the next lot of w**king material for hobbit geeks is going to be made in New Zealand. I slept a lot easier last night. Thanks Mr Key Jag2010-10-28 09:30:18

I don't give a sh*t about the tax breaks - we will still make money on the projects that we wouldn't have otherwise.
Rewriting our labour laws however, is ridiculous and insulting.

The way I see it...
You go overseas and mention NZ and you'll get one of three answers:
1/ Lord of the Rings
2/ All Blacks
3/ I hear its beautiful (which is also highly influenced by LOTR)

LOTR is the best marketing campaign NZ has ever had. If we have to cough up a few dollars to keep the Hobbit here, and our tourism industry alive, I'm all for it.

Before I came to live here, I heard answers 2 and 3 (not influenced by LOTR) on a regular basis.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

You really want NZ to be known for a 87-hour long overrated trilogy? or the All Blacks? wow, what a great country.

To you guys that are having a go at the Government for what they did can I just ask what you would have done? Would you have let the movies go overseas without a fight? Ruin an industry?

Warners screwed us, though perhaps they wanted to get more out of us, but what choice did the Government have if they wanted to keep the films here?

If the whole industry depends on one crappy film, it's hardly an industry.

How they hear about NZ is irrelevant to me. The important thing is that people around the world have actually heard about it, and hence are contemplating spending their $$$ here.

Even those people who think the movies were crap still rave on about how beautiful the scenery was etc etc.
