i think its sad that many people on here have gained satisfaction out of watching someone fall from grace more because he seemingly dislikes the phoenix, or likes to undermine us when he can

Not to mention the fact hes a woman basher aye bopman,no one likes seeing someone suffer for bashing their girlfriend then covering it up with money earnt from being a public figure that people are supposed to look up to...

Nope, its only because he hates the phoenix....are you serious? I find your defending of him odd.

Sure, its convenient that he dislikes the phoenix...and yes tv3 have extended the story a little too much for their own gain...but at the end of the day he deserves everything he gets because of what he did

Allegedly

Agreed. The consequences of his actions are nothing to do with us. Even if he was pro-Nix I'd want to see him losing his job after what he's done.

How the f**k is expressing my opinion that what he did was terrible gutless? I'd be happy to tell him to his face that he should be jailed. Critical_Lemon2008-07-14 07:11:58

i think people would hate him even if he didn't dislike the Phoenix. I have friends that don't like the Phoenix, but i don't want them to go to jail. And fall from grace implies some embarrassing moment/s - or getting fat and useless like Elvis, not wifebeating.
I like tautologies because I like them.

Hands up if you can guess who voted the first option!!!!

I'd say he's a puppet but at the risk of being called racist I'll call him a muppet instead.

Tui's billboard in Auckland cracked me up

"Here's $100 000. Keep it quiet....."

Don't think any of the options are quite on the mark for me...as the horror outweights the delight significantly. HarryHotspur2008-07-14 10:05:28

Hardley a fall from grace, he beat his ex girlfriend to the point of breaking her back, then claimed he didn't know that he'd injured her so badly, and then paid her $100k+ to keep it quiet....... joe public would have been jailed, him no he just gets dragged therough the papers. I don't feel bad for enjoying his downfall, he's a negative annoying little sh*t, never has anything positive to say about anything, football or otherwise!

Critical Lemon, 2nd Best and myself get on a pole? Gutless? f**k Off, Gutless is giving a woman a kicking and braking 4 vertibrae. I applaud my fellow nominees for having the balls to take a stand against this sort of mindless violence.

I'm happy to front up to Veitch and look down at him and tell him he's the gutless one.

Oh and for those of you who think 85 people actually voted for Veitch, it's a rigged pole. Don't log in and every vote counts. Nothing like bumping up the numbers to make your own point look good.

A sad pole if ever there was one.

I have to admit, I am very proud to stand up and be recognised as being against domestic violence in any of its forms. men whom do endorse, partake in it are the gutless ones. Go on, flame me, you know you want to. But you wont change how I feel against men whom bash women.

It is pretty unfair, I just voted 3 times just to see if it could have been rigged...it probably is.

Bopman, how the fook can you defend a man who beats his partner, let alone any man that kicks a woman when shes on the ground so hard that he breaks her back....and then all he's concerned about is his career so he pays her to keep quiet.

No matter how you try to spin this, and have a crack at those who are appalled at his behaviour for venting their anger and dismay, you can't seriously be trying to support him based on people here not liking him for his inability to report positively on anything football.....

Take a look at yourself man.....Tony Veitch is a criminal and gutless FOOKIN coward!!!

FFS.  Blame Veitch.  Gezz, you can even have a crack at this sh*tty poll which people have taken far too seriously.  But go easy on Bopman, our Yellowfever brother.

I think Bopman is looking at it from this angle:

1) Let's all love each other.  Even wife beaters.  Very noble.
2) Reflect on our own shortcomings before stoning Veitchy.

And I've been as guilty as anyone, poking fun at Veitchy.

maybe the poll choices were not the best worded, hence we took it seriously. However I still maintain I am proud to stand up and be counted as a man who is against domestic violence in any form and that

I found Veitch's behaviour repugnent at best. One for the assault and two for trying to buy some silence.

I'm pretty happy to examine my shortcomings, in fact I do it regularly. I'm even happy to say that I have cracked a girl's rib once, completely by accident. But not, like Vietch, in a fit of rage, with intent to cause pain.

Man you guys are idiots.. "the vote is rigged"...

Duh.. it's multiple voting... the dude unclicked only allow to vote once.

Come on guys get with it. Vietch is a criminal and should go to jail.. but it won't happen because he is part of the public eye. Load of ballocks.

I'm not really serious that it is rigged, I just pointed out that it could be. Why would you open a vote like this up to multiple voting though? I guess there could be a crossover of opinion that means two answers appeal to you but surely not much.

can i make my position quite clear
1) what vietch did is horrendous, i in no way condone him beating a woman and i think he will be punished as the police see fit in accordance with law and with precedent
2) i believe he shouldn't lose his job, i think he may struggle to do either of his jobs well because he just lacks credibility. ie how can anyone interviewee (say jimmy cowan) take him seriously when he is trying to push him into a corner but if the police charge him then i think he will. would not suprise me at all to see him reappear on the sports news sometime over summer when no-one is really watching
3) i think the media coverage has been poor, its very quickly became about one upmanship rather than reporting a story. it seems like there is a pretty clear divide between tvnz-nzherald/tv3-dom post.
4) the gutless comments i made last week were in regard to people commenting on here but being unwiling to voice there opinion to t***er who was going to challenge you on your opinions, but i apologise to anyone who took my gutless comments as a personal afront
5) and my comment earlier in this thread i still stand by but if read properly it is in no way condoning his action. i believe that many people on here have enjoyed his fall more because of the perception that he likes to undermine the nix
6) if anyone wants to talk about this further buy me a beer at the bencher on sunday and we'll chat because really thats what this whole forums about, supporting the boys and come sunday thats what we will all be doingbopman2008-07-15 10:24:14

Thanks for the clarification Bopman, and sorry if I wasn't clear on your stance/opinions.   I have worked with Veitch on a number of occasions and found him to be a polite and professional (if not a little talkative) but I think both his positions are now untenable after he has admitted the assault and the payout.

Look forward to the beer on Sunday .....the one you buy that is....

It's not just about Veitch's credibility, but also TVNZ's. The latter would lose a lot of face if they retained them. TVNZ might have to let him go if only to save their own arse. Otherwise they'll become known as the network that doesn't mind if its employees engage in domestic abuse. This could result in the public boycotting TVNZ, advertisers pulling funding, content providers refusing to deal with TVNZ, and perhaps lower government funding.

That being said, he should lose his job IMHO - He's a public figurehead. For the sheer sake of accountability he should be sacked. Though as far as I'm concerned, he shouldn't be able to continue working for TVNZ for the sheer sake that Mt Eden Prison doesn't have a television studio.

It's The Radio Network. Radio New Zealand are the govt owned stations.

Interesting posts. I never lsiten to him, so can't say I would against him because he bags the Nix, in fact I wouldn't vote at all. I would say that he deserves to lose his job though. From his point of view, he couldn't go on air knowing every person looking at him and/or watching him knew he assaulted an ex. His confidence is shot, let alone the confidence of others in him.
Reports yesterday said he left her there for 6 hours. I say don't believe all you read.

The continuing media frenzy over the Tony Veitch affair has left me uneasy, even faintly nauseated. When journalists turn on one of their own with the ferocity of jackals tearing at the throat of a wounded pack member, I'm glad I'm out of the game full-time.

Now Garth George knows how the rest of us feel with the type of journalism that has become common place. Veitch has experienced the media spotlight and it is a shame a few others within the media don't also get a taste. They might realise how lucky they are at reporting on others and not being reported on.

The beating was bad enough regardless of whether he was provoked.  But it's the hush money (reportedly 170K) that gets me and is why his position was untenable.  Without the media, he would never have come clean.

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
