Anyone else bothered by the fact that so many people are keen to defend Veitch?

There should be an article in Salient in the next few weeks on the topic of whether domestic violence actually is acceptable in NZ society.

Why is a z-list "celebrity's" private life being the scene of such scrutiny.

Really, I could care less about Tony Veitch. If I wanted to have a go about anything, it'd be his stupid horse face and persistent flirting with Wendy Petrie. But what he does behind closed doors - seriously, who is anyone to debate his job position?

More importantly, why does anyone care?

From TVNZ Website

Former sports broadcaster Tony Veitch was remanded on bail after appearing briefly in Auckland District Court on Monday afternoon.

Veitch, 34, appeared in front of a public gallery packed mainly with media to face six counts of male assaults female and one count of injuring with reckless disregard.

The charges were dated between 2002 and 2006 and relate to him allegedly assaulting his former partner, Kristin Dunne-Powell.

The former TVNZ and Radio Sport presenter entered no plea and was remanded on bail, which was not opposed, to a pre-depositions hearing date of September 29.

Veitch's lawyer, Stuart Grieve, said the charges would be "strenuously defended".

Outside court, Veitch said he's more determined than ever to fight to clear his name and is looking forward to every chance for all information and all of the facts to be played out in the appropriate forum.

Veitch says while the past six weeks have been incredibly difficult and frustrating, he's relieved there's now "clarity" going forward.

Veitch, who was accompanied by his wife, says he's shocked and saddened that the saga has got this far.

Meanwhile, police say there has not been a public apology made over a message left on Tony Veitch's answer-phone.

A female detective who called Veitch's Herne Bay home on Thursday evening made the comment, "I bet he hasn't got a smile on his face like that anymore," after hearing a cheerful recorded message.

Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty says reports of a public apology are incorrect. She says it was an unfortunate and regrettable error and the detective is no longer working personally with Veitch.

Poor fella, get his ass back on TV. I'm not at all about to support woman bashing but innocent until proven guilty, that is until the media get involved!

It was a cochere and fully legal compensation agreement I believe, hardly extortion. Don't think they could get her for breech of the confidentiality either given it would be hard to hide what happened to her from her friends and it wasn't her who actaully went to the media.

My case for extortion would lie in the fact (?) that a freelance reporter has come out and said she went to him with the story and made some initial enquiries as well as making initial enquiries with the police THEN going to Vietch and his lawyers to negotiate the settlement.

It was her who made the move, rather than Vietch's lawyers? Where did you read/hear about it?

One thing about this is that it's brought a lot of misogyny out in to the open.

Spot on, he said he lashed out. Legally speaking that can mean anything. It could be verbal it could be physical, but I hope like hell if he's innocent he can prove it. From what i've seen in the papers it's been different from both sides. All I know is that he's a huge talent and I don't think he should loose his career over this.

In terms of her, i'd be asking for my money back. If you pay someone to shut up, then you expect that. Turns out she didn't, he needs his $150,000 back. What goes around comes around.

He is light years ahead of the guys covering the Olympics atm, they're news casters not sports casters. And he controls the game of 2 halves so well, I don't think Mike Hoskin's going to come close to filling his shoes!

But don't worry, i'm not about to bust a "leave Britney alone" video out for him
