This is recent. My first encounter was an album called "wild women with steak knives"...

umm in the case of this and going with my thread title I have to say I'm glad they don't always make music like they used to lol

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I shudder to think what your dear old Gran would've made of the infamous Lemon Incest, in which partially undressed Serge and daughter Charlotte cavort on a double bed - here if you must http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-O5MZfsolg

That's not to mention his (brilliant) concept album Melody Nelson which is your basic aging-sleaze-runs-over-pubescent-schoolgirl-in-his-Rolls-and-takes-her-back-to-his-place-to-educate-her-in-the-ways-of-l'mour saga: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UnP7yFPuBE&feature=related

yeah I like these and they really were "dance" tunes - quite electronica tho the fashion leaves something to be desired. reminded me tho of the great Chaka  Khan

If anyone needs a bass guitar masterclass cop SK's tip of Chaka Khan
the late 70's stuff is truly great
Anthony Jackson and Willie Weeks give it large groove

I say seminal.

Question for the Japanese-o-philes (Nihon-o-philes?):

Can anyone provide me with an Engris tranlation of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biruXqLnSvs&feature=related?

I used to know the Chinese version (sung by Emil Chow and others) - still got it on tape somewhere, but just wondered how different the two versions are.

Cheers

"Here Comes The Sun"

Beatles version (Abbey Road) - better instrumental
Sheryl Crow version (the Bee Movie) - better vocals

Also "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles.

I love them all. One of the greatest pop bands ever (only their first album can reasonably be pigeon-holed as 'ska'). A run of 19 Top-20 UK hits between 1979 and 1985 speaks for itself.

The early stuff is a given  - everybody knows The Prince, One Step Beyond, My Girl, Baggy Trousers etc.

But I really love a lot of their mid-period stuff. Michael Caine, One Better Day and Yesterday's Men was a great trio of singles.

Likewise Lovestruck, Johnny The Horse and Drip Fed Fred from the criminally under-rated 1999 album Wonderful.

And then in 2005 they release the brilliant Liberty of Norton Folgate with singles like NW5 and Forever Young.

Fantastic band. The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter (to a lesser extent) were all great bands but I really don't think any of them can hold a candle to the career of Madness.

Just stumbled across Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas soundtrack after all these years.

Cancion mixteca and the reprise at the end of the monologue "I knew these people" are brilliant.

Aside from Spurs songs & chants I have been thrashing Chopin's Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor, 2nd movement (Larghetto).

Two versions here:

Kempff
Rubenstein

I think Rubenstein edges it for me.

(yes, yes, I am a pretentious tw@t. And your point is?)

Have moved off Chopin and am re-living my yoof wiv Daniel Barenboim's "The Emperor" concerto.

My parents had a 1968 recording of The Man with Otto Klemperer (conducting) which I hammered for a while.

Here is a more recent rendition (2009).

I also found out via google that Rubinstein was very influential on a young Barenboim.
