I disagree Frankie. I don't think a society of spoiled wankers is created at junior football and kids, especially those with low confidence etc benefit from positive encouragement. I think the negative crap on sidelines is a far bigger problem, not just for sport but for society in general. It hardly helps increase volunteer numbers to ref etc as why the f**k would you bother giving up your time to be yelled at by people who in my experience often don't know the basic rules.

Does he want everyone to be silent the whole game? What if a kid turns their opponent and plays a good smart ball? Silence?

Also, some kids do just play for fun and that shouldn't be a problem.

A society of spoiled wankers is created in the home (and possibly through Govt social policies).

Junior football may  be part of that.

Probably not though.

I have no idea about how we should treat children, which is why I am not allowed within 300 meters of any school.  therefore, I am not going to argue with people who (for whatever reason) watch a fair amount of childrens football.

I guess it comes down to what we are hoping for these kids to achieve from football?  If the goal is to build self confidence, then have parents rah rah and squeal in delight at the most mundane and pointless things as much as they want.  If we are looking at developing kids to be the best footballers that they can then maybe what Billy is suggesting is right.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Yeah agreed as far as lot's of noise towards mundane play but I think there's a difference between that and general vocal encouragement. In my opinion, training twice a week and having coaches who know a bit about football would go a long way to junior development. The big issue is time. Parents are very busy these days and club players who also coach juniors train twice a week aswell. Hard to know how to get past it but I think these are bigger problems. Awesome that Billy coaches, I think his columns are generally negative crap but having an ex-international as a coach would be great for the kids.

What is mundane play and when would that be encouraged to the detriment of the player?

How about when a slow player jockeys/tackles a much faster/skillful player?  Or if a timid player commits to a tackle and wins the ball and after encouragement does so again and again.

Sorry Billy. Not every player is going to develop into the next Marco, but if they enjoy the game and their parents encourage and support that (by yelling or whatever) then I'll take that over some coach who wants to control every aspect of player development.

That's the problem I have with all of this that I think I referred to, that's good play with any ability and some kids only want to play for fun and that should be encouraged too. It teaches you things you won't learn on the couch, good winner/gracious loser etc.

Is he not talking about yelling, and the like, towards kids in a specific age group? The 5 - 9 age group.  Developmental issues can be a factor.

There was some research, posted on here about an eon ago, that showed that kids did peform better without sideline parental pressure. Maybe some eagle eye remembers seeing the post? Anyone?

Hmm...

I think that's where it gets messy. I didn't read it as yelling or pressure, more like (over?) enthusiastic support. Will just put it down to Billy being Billy and leave it at that.

Watching CCTV Travelogue (Ch29) - it is about Taiwan this time (Marc Edwards - not as good as He Tianran, but enthusiastic nonetheless).

So after seeing this episode, my adulation of John Lennon has somewhat diminished (listen @12:00 ).

Might have to go to Taiwan and check it out myself one day.

And continuing on that theme.  The tribe in that clip are the Amis, they also have another song  which was plagiarised by Enigma in "Return to Innocence".

Just heard someone say that it was time so and so 'fronted' on television about an issue. I know that it gets used a lot but...

Does the term fronted sound confrontational to anyone? Why not just use the word appeared?

Hmm...

Friend got a new job. $3 an hour more than last. Old boss was disappointed, he said, as friend is good worker and been part of the team for five years. So he offered her rise if she would stay. Friend was interested until he told her how much of a rise, FORTY cents an hour! Friend declined and moved to her new job.

Interesting comments.
I coached an under 13 team some years ago and we were playing up in an under 14 tournament. We got to the final and lost 2.1
I had my son and another young lad in the car and I could see their faces in the rear vision mirror-unhappy and wondering if I was going to blast them. I said, únlucky guys, they were too big and strong but I'm very proud of you.' The beaming faces were enough for me and something I have never forgotten.
