1. New Zealander's getting het up when people disrespect the haka by not doing what we expect them to do when they are presented with a haka. Let's say there was a hypothetical culture out there, for argument's sake let's say an Andean Mountain tribe, and let's say in their culture it just so happens that the highest respect you can give someone who is greeting or challenging you is to turn your back on them, and the rudest thing you could do is get upset about them having turned their back on you... If a New Zealand sports team played a team from that Andean Mountain tribe and the New Zealand team did a haka... whose cultural values trumps whose? Do we get upset that they are disrespecting our haka because we think that their turning their back on our haka is disrespectful, or do they get upset at us for getting offended when they pay us the highest compliment they can think of by turning their backs on our haka?
That would be valid if such a culture existed and this scenario actually happened. You cant just make a scenario up to prove another point.
If such a thing happened,I'm sure the other side would be allowed to turn their back,as it would actually be seen as facing the haka in their culture,so everyone wins. None has to trump the other.
But as i was saying, making up a scenario to fit another = stupid.

Warming up during a haka is pretty disrespectful though.
- How so?
Its a challenge or greeting.
If i said Hello or good luck to you,id find it pretty disrespectful for you to turn around and start doing something else. Not a perfect analogy, but pretty close,so dont go poking imaginary holes in it. Though I know you will anyway.

Interesting that the ABs have said they would carry on the haka regardless and would do it before they came out on to the pitch if needed.
Although this is what makes me think the All Blacks should just get over themselves. Theyre using the haka as some sort of self important tool, soley to fire themselves up for the game, rather than for any cultural reason.
In which case,I welcome other sides to ignore it.

nice, was actually waiting for that from dairyflat.
However as i said,it is a much closer analogy than a completely made up culture whereby one must turn their backs to any challenge. Which is not the case with the haka.
In my scenario, the All blacks are greeting or challenging the opposition, who are turned around doing something else (warming up). Which is actually the case.
Meh,makes sense in my head anyway. Its not perfect, but its pretty close.
I also said other sides should feel free to ignore it,because the All Blacks clearly aren't doing it for any cultural reason if they want to do it in the changing rooms instead,if they don't get their way.Tegal2010-11-03 15:11:48

FFS. If you're going to accuse me of making stuff up that you think to stupid at least accuse me of making up what I ACTUALLY made up! I didn't ever propose a made up culture where one must turn their backs on any challenge.... that WOULD be just silly.
What I said was:
[quote]let's say in their culture it just so happens that the highest respect you can give someone who is greeting or challenging you is to turn your back on them,
So my hypothetical tribe would only turn their backs on a haka as a mark of respect.
Sheesh!
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.
