Some of the planes made out of the "Goal" posters were good. Some would have made Mythbusters. But yeah I never like folk chucking stuff.

They were probably rugby fans. Seen them throw full can of piss (human) from the top of the old Millard Stand.

Was a "feature" at the old Lancaster Park too (Southern hospitality I think it was called).

I just cannot get how killing something for sport is ok. Food yeah ok. If I'd shot that beast I'd be devastated.

Isn't sport where one side has a fair chance of beating the other side. Maybe the Lion could have his own sniper with a high powered gun protecting it as well and we'll see how fair that is to Melissa Bachman.

Heard an interesting point about that, which made me think a little.

It's pretty long winded, but the gist of it is that these reserves breed native wild animals and in a lot of cases prevent them from going extinct. The meat is apparently distributed amongst local African communities and the money that such hunters spent on being able to hunt the older animal is put back into these reserves so the cycle can keep going.

So by paying to shoot the lion she, in effect, did a lot of good for international conservation.

That's a very rough and brief explanation.

But got me thinking.

Even so, it was pretty stupid of her to post such a picture so publically...people were always going to react the way they did (I was outraged too)

I understand the necessity of culling the old and injured for the sake of conservation. It stops lions, etc turning towards the slower and easier to catch human food source for din dins for example. This can be done discreetly and sensitively by people who have a connection to the land.

I don't get how having a picture of some gurning redneck straddling the King of the Jungle is going to attract tourists to come along and watch big kitties get their brains blown out. Most people find this either abhorrent or at the least disturbing and would be turned off visiting and spending money in a country/park that supported this. There are many more conservation projects going on that don't involve tooling up some "good ol' gal" from Duke Nukumland to blow away the local wildlife.

Can you imagine getting visiting tourists to strangle to death old/infirm kiwi's over here? You know, pay $50, pull off the birds' head, take some snaps for their blog and then you could serve it up in some restaurant to feed local skinny students and hipster types as they need feeding.

Can you imagine What Gareth would say??

Not directed at you Tegal you know that.

So there was this winery in nelson/marlborough that looked at establishing habitat to encourage kereru which in turn would be caught and cooked for the winery's restaraunt.

Great idea, I think the local iwi were keen. Was opposed by DOC and ngo greenies.

Also not quite the same but deer trophy parks here in NZ are set up to fleece rich overseas "hunters". It's nowhere near being a sport, but it is very lucrative.

I have no problem with that.

Its the grey area where capitalism and environmentalism meet. If they couldn't make money selling hunting experiences, the wildlife park wouldn't exist.

Its basically a creative way to solve the "tragedy of the commons" effect.

If sheep and cows weren't privatised and farmed they'd probably be extinct.

But yeah agree with your point about parading the photo FT. It also has people who claim to love the environment all up on arms about it, without getting their facts straight first (as people tend to do, especially here in nz), and it basically gives what is a useful program a lot of bad press.

Adverts #157 - Countdown and all adverts using Christmas to sell stuff that's nothing to do with Christmas.

"The countdown to Christmas is on and this week lettuce is a low...."

1) It's November - not even the month of Christmas

2) What the fuck does lettuce have to do with Christmas?

3) Even if lettuce did have anything to do with Christmas and I bought it on special now it would be rotten by Christmas.

Give me my money back Countdown.

1, however, they need to refund me all the money I have spent there because they have used it to fund such a meaningless and irritating ad campaign.

Yes, that is so misleading of them.  I wonder how many other punters have been sucked in to buying a lettuce too early for their Christmas salad.

I got broccoli.  It was on special and it will keep a bit longer.

The ridiculous drive wise campaign in and around Rotorua, featuring a self righteous, cartoon morepork. Who is this meant to appeal to? 4 year olds I would hazard a guess at and what the hell are 4 year olds driving for? These signs make me suffer from road rage and drive worse. For those of you unfamiliar with the self righteous, preaching owl here is a photo.

The government should stop taking tax and be free to find funding from some local businesses, then the signs would be better and more professional.

Reminds me of a Viz Top Tips for remembering the traffic light colours.

Say this rhyme when you approach a set:

When the red light does shine I must stop on the line.
When the amber is there then I'd better take care.
But when the green light does show, then off I may go.

I picked up the Rogers Profanisaurus the other day from the app store. Gold. Also have the PDF of the first book on my iPad and there is some funny stuff in that.

When we went to Rotorua for the Nix v AW game, I was most entertained by the morepork road signs. Story goes I waved at them too.

Last night after 6 PM Dick smiths were advertsising their special deal - offer finished Monday. Which I gather from the fine print was 00:01 Monday morning. Anyone know of a Dick Smiths open after 6pm on a Sunday night?
