Yeah, I enjoyed watching Karl Rove hoping for the impossible.

Yep, been doing the same.  Watching Fox until I couldn't take the spinning and reaching and justifying anymore, then switched to CNN for neutral commentary, then back to Fox...

Fox now predictably "Romney lost because he was not conservative enough".

Electoral college looking about where I thought it would be - 330ish for Obama.  Not at all close.

Thought Romney gave a good concession speech.

According to CNN the score was Obama United 303, Romney Wanderers 206.

However the possession was a lot more even (51% -49%).  Seemed to be some poor officiating early on but fortunately didn't influence the game significantly.

Now that Obama United has taken the North American title it will be good to see how he performs in Europe or more importantly, Asia.  I think he will struggle with the pitch over there (sticky grass).

Fox News is great at the moment - it's like watching the survivors of a plane crash stranded on a desert island and slowly turning to cannibalism.

Already banging the "voting irregularities" drum.

Obama might have won but he still won't fix the economy and that will result the USA going into recession. He has had 4 years and nothing has changed.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Domestically he has a poisoned chalice.

Internationally the world is probably a better place.

Well, the US economy has grown over the last three quarters, so it's not as if he's incompetent in that regard. And the areas that have experienced the economic recovery have overwhelmingly thanked him with their votes this election (there was a brilliant moment on Fox News a while back when they realised this - they had the big map on the screen and someone said "Really, it's the areas with highest education and the ones in economic recovery that have voted for Obama" followed by dead silence for a couple of seconds).

Ceptins that the areas on the map are very similar to the 2008 result and if the TV One pundit is right, they are the usual political divide in the Land of the Frei.

Is he for real? He does realise Obama's won the popular vote? And he does realise that even if he hadn't, the criticism is misplaced since the electoral process doesn't require winning the popular vote, and consequently, the campaigns don't focus on it?

To a large extent, yes, but Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania were hoped for by the Republicans, and they got nada from them. And Obama's bailout of the auto industry had a lot to do with winning the first two.

Don't like the combative description of the "battleground" states.  I prefer the NZ appellation of "swinging" states.

If the USA had swinging states I'd be tempted to move over there (esp if one of them was Washington).

How can a country that invented the iPad, the iPhone, the internet (may not have actually invented the internet but it helps my argument), the atomic bomb and lots of other ridiculous shit fail so miserably at voting?

Machines that wouldn't let you vote for one candidate, running out of ballots, not enough polling places to stop ridiculous lines.

It isn't that complex? Surely? It can't be that hard to get right?!

After CNN had called it last night John King looked at the red/blue map and made the best point of all re the countrys make up these days. All through the middle, all red and then on the flanks blue. I just don't see how American politics goes anywhere while those two competing ideas go at each other. They wont achieve anything in the house, governing will be a nightmare. It makes great entertainment and great television, and the republican party would be a wonderful circus if they didn't have such a big say in world affairs. It's all frightening. Their problem is where to go from here, the Tea Party activists will claim they lost because they weren't conservative enough. Any person with half a brain (which probably rules out most of the Republican Party) looking at the exits can see that isn't the case. The Conservative base isn't a big enough block to win where they need to these days. Surely they have to swing towards the centre. Marco Rubio from Florida is the name already being talked up big time, probably because he could take back that hispanic block which might be enough to form a coalition of voters to win the thing. Some articles this morning claiming Chris Christie, who was an early favourite, has written his chances off the way he cosied up to Obama during Sandy. That goes to prove the ridiculousness of it all, because the guy actually lead he wont be able to win a Republican primary. I guess Palin comes back into the mix, but she couldn't win. The guys they were talking about four years ago, the guy Jindal from Louisianna (?) might have a look. Who knows.

The mid-terms in two years will tell us a lot about the future of the republican party. If theyre dominated by Tea Party candidates/activists like the last ones I dont think they can win in four years. No matter who runs against them. But if the party can engineer a swing closer to the centre then maybe they have a shot.

For the Dems, the talk already is about Hilary. She would be a formidable candidate and it seems that Bill has been one of the superstars of this campaign. CNN talking up Joe Biden last night, im not sure how old he is but he has never struck me as particularly Presidential.

The Florida result is the one that surprised me the most, reading the polls in the weeks leading up Romney had comfortably held a 1-2 point lead in Florida that hadn't moved much. Obamas ground game to turn out the hispanic and minority voting block must have been immense.

After all of that, I shall now retreat back into my RealClearPolitics cave, soak it all up and wait for four years time.

Just watching some more Fox, a programme called 'The Five'.  It appears to be 2 moderate republicans, a teabag republican and an extreme right douchebag beating up and talking over a fat moderate democrat.

The bit I just watched showed a clip of Obama's speech saying that 'we need to work together in bipartisanship to avoid the fiscal cliff, need to share the burden, blah blah blah, negotiate...compromise.' followed immediately after by a clip of (House Speaker) Boehner saying that 'the house has stayed republican, and we have the mandate to remain the "last defense" against big government and the american people have spoken and said no tax increases under any circumstances'.

They then came back to the panel, who started talking about how Obama has failed to compromise and needs to do much more to work together with republicans, we will have four more years of gridlock because of Obama.  I just don't understand how that sort of level of cognitive dissonance can exist.

If he's having a break chatting about the Nix, hopefully Donald will tempt him out of the closet
