when will the draw come out, would I be right in thinking the preliminary round would be on Anzac day?

No Nelson Suburbs again this year.

I have some sympathy with them about the costs. NCR are in a similar position, although with a slightly shorter travel time to Wellington.

I totally understand them not wanting to compete in the Cup because of the risk of costs. That's a sensible move.

But whining to the media that you can't afford it and that NZF should pay for you to compete is a bit selfish, given there's plenty of other clubs who face the same financial issues but manage to make it work.

Yeah all northern clubs play each other from the first round so a Taupo side may have to travel to Whangarei due instance. At least Nelson Suburbs would play in Nelson against other (weaker) Nelson sides till round 3 I think.

The oddest thing about Nelson Suburbs is that they're chucking nearly 40 grand into flying for every MPL game.

I'm fairly certain the 7 Chch clubs bus (at least for the most part) in the reverse situation?

Obviously there are issues re what bussing does to the body, but surely the CC is more prestigious than the MPL, and they could find some balance? Suburbs could probably beat 4/7 Chch clubs while being less than their best.

Added bonus for NZF promotional bods: Siggy will be playing Chatham Cup.

And $58,240 on an Operations Manager. Very strange.

meh, paying someone to work for them (even if it seems like an overpay) makes more sense than flying to play in a club league

Bus a few games, and use the savings to enter the cup.

By moaning like this without exploring at least that option, they're effectively saying NZF should pay for them to fly to some MPL games.

You can't moan that you don't have the funds (and that NZF should pay) when you choose to fly your squad to amateur club games.

I think most of the Christchurch teams fly to Nelson when playing Suburbs.

I think most of the Christchurch teams fly to Nelson when playing Suburbs, if they don't fly then would require to pick up accommodations / food costs.

And don't most of them apply for funding to cover this?

To me there is still something magic about the chatham cup. The idea that some college team could do really well in it appeals. Remember a few years bwck when Rongotai did really well?

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

One of the differences between League and Chatham Cup is that the League draw is known well in advance. However, the Cup draw can give hardly any time to fund or plan an away trip, especially if there's an unexpected supplementary round like in 2003 where Rangers AFC (of Christchurch) had to travel to Nelson for the second time in the Cup that season.

Fundraise early and throughout the season in preparation for a cup run? If it's not needed then reinvest into the club? Or is that too logical?

Nelson believe they are likely to progress deep into the Cup. There is a 50% chance they will have to travel away each round. A risk they are not willing to take. Traveling to Dunedin or Auckland would be expensive.

But all this is odd because they do have funds according to Tony Smith's article. The playing group want to play Chatham Cup too.

My bad on Christchurch teams not flying - seems a bit ridiculous, especially for the ones that aren't Cashmere Tech

Yes and the pitch could have been a leveller against the young WeeNix boys... Now they will be playing on Newtown Park

Good to see Eastbourne entered this year. Always nice to have a bit of variety in terms of clubs.

Just our of interest, to help me put these comments in perspective, how many of those offering advice here to Nelson on how to run their affairs have ever administered or fund-raised for a regional league club with big travel commitments? Tks.

Yes I think there have been 284 rounds in the Mainland Premier League since it started in 2002 and only in two season when Richmond Athletic were in MPL has Suburbs not have had to travel to Christchurch for an away game so nearly 140 trips to Christchurch over the years for Suburbs to cover the costs for.

Ahh yes, the old "if you've never been a pro who are you to say anything about the merits a pro player?" argument.

I daresay you've never been a lawyer Bruce, but would still have opinions about the statutes and rules that govern the game.

A silly argument.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
