Well its almost that time of year again. You can smell the fresly cut grass, the mrs.macs steak and cheese pies, and the sweaty hrrum of eager footballers to start yet again what is called...

The Central League.

With Olympics 50th year ahead of them will they finally get there hands on the trophy, or will Miramar be looking to snatch another one for their prized shelf, will Lower Hutt step up to the plate and take one home, or will Wests get back on their horse and carve their names into that trophy yet again.

Only time will tell bob.

Your thoughts?

Petone to go one better and win it this season. Olympic to spend thousands and come in 4th, Miramar to lose the last game of the season to Petone (delayed as Petone go on and win the Chatham Cup, beating Central 3-2 in Wellington) to end up 2nd. Lower Hutt to get relegated and Wests (with an average of 14) to finish 6th.

Its no longer a problem.

Judging on how the teams were last year in Central League and the addition of Wairarapa United this is how I think the teams will finish this year.

1. Miramar
2. Petone
3.Napier City Rovers
4. Lower Hutt
5. Wairarapa United ( they will surprise alot of teams).
6. Wests
7. Olympic
8. Palmerston North Marist
9. Team Taranaki
10. Wellington United

Pass 'n move. Good Call, you gost some right, below is the correct order.  Napier will have a good season this year, and I pick will win the league. Lower Hutt will fail to live up to expectations and Wests would have been bottom dwellers but Wgnt United will save their butt.

Rumour floating around that United are on a bit of a recruitment drive and Wairarapa... don't Petone need a keeper Toffeeman ?

How's my driving? - Whine here

I don't think Wellington United will be much of threat based on last season unless they break the bank and start competing financially with Olympic for players . Big Phil from the rapa has already said he wanted to spend an additional $60k and given last years budget was reported as being $90k that given him a war chest of $150k to spend on players etc.

f**king ridiculous... for amateur football... imagine if that money was spent on facilities or for the developement of the game instead of filling the pockets of 'amateur' players.

Just stupid.

They were a decent team, but surely not that much was spent.

Yeah 2 might be a slight understatement.
Can see the Rapa , Olympic , Lower Hutt , Napier,Team Taranaki and West spending between $50k and $100k.
Betweem $20k and $50k is the amount  I can see the likes of Miramar , Petone , Palmerston Marist and Wellington United spending

Cowan a major gain for Wairarapa United
29.01.2009
By Gary Caffell

Manawatu national league skipper Adam Cowan is a major gain for the Wairarapa United men's soccer squad, currently in the early throes of preparation for their first-ever season at central league level.

Cowan is a versatile player who has played most of his soccer as a central midfielder but who has actually been turning out for Manawatu as a striker and has also filled the fullback role.

Not surprisingly, Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is delighted to have a player of Cowan's proven calibre at his disposal.

"He expressed a keenness to play for us and we're rapt to have him," Keinzley said.

"He gives us skill and experience, and that's a

good mix."

Gordon will be one of four Wairarapa United players who took part in this season's national league, the others being goalkeeper Matt Borren, fullback James Oxtoby and striker Seule Soromon.

Captain Pita Rabo would almost certainly also have been part of that action but for suffering a shoulder injury which kept him out of his team's central league qualifying games towards the end of their 2008 season, an injury which is still in the recovery process.

Gordon may not be the only notable acquisition for Wairarapa United's central league campaign either.

Another possibility is Troy Burling, a former leading age group player who turned out for the Upper Hutt premier division side last season, while a talented midfielder in Masterton Athletic's local league side, Chris Kirkham, is also in the reckoning.

Keinzley is delighted too that all but Anton Ross and Guiseppe Cugliari from last year's Wairarapa United squad which won the Capital premier division title before qualifying for central league, are available to play again in 2009. Ross will be attending Otago University while Cugliari will be player-coach of the club's seconds team.

Three pre-season games for Wairarapa United have been organised against fellow central league teams Taranaki, Palmerston North Marist and Napier City Rovers the venues for which are still to be finalised but they won't be defending the Hilton Petone Cup title they won last year.

Their national league players would be unavailable for most of the games involved there as would Rabo so Keinzley has decided to give it a miss.

Interestingly enough, all of Wairarapa United's central league matches for next season have been scheduled for Sundays with their home games being staged at the Pugh Sportsbowl.

Keinzley has no issue with the Sunday situation, saying it would create an opportunity for people participating in other codes on the Saturdays to also follow Wairarapa United's fortunes at first hand. "We had a huge support base last year and hopefully we can build on that," he said.

Guy Smith couldn't be a coach if he had all his teeth knocked out, and 42 seats put in their place.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

My current bug bear, I don't think any player should be paid purely to play football.  Make them coach or paint the club rooms or something but purely to turn up on Tuesday and Thursday and play games in front of 50 people on a saturday, ridiculous.  In fact, I think that should be a rule...not that Capital Football would ever get involved pro-actively.  I would be very interested to see some investigating done by the gaming trusts that effectively fund this league seeing as they are not supposed to contribute to professional sport.

The short termism is truly astonishing, especially when you look at how poor the training facilities at most clubs are.
