Shame their socks couldn't have been a darker shade of red. Then they'd be Red Red Wine.

theres a lot of banter about the Rapa spending alot of money, but they have only got two new players from last years side. A large part of the money that was mentioned will be spent on the travel costs of getting the first and seconds to and from Wellington every second weekend, an expense the Wellington teams dont have to account for.

Firstly, they were already spending a lot on their side last season

Secondly, they were already travelling over the hill every second weekend playing in capital prem.

That may increase with the Taranaki/Napier trip but thats not as far away as for wellington clubs.  Why pretend that Wairarapa do not have a substantial budget?

Palmy Marist looking decidedly below average this year. Lacking any sort of national league player unlike other years, except Duker who got shown what grade he should play in the nzfc final.

Lost Cowan, Robson, Chettleburgh and Milne, and by the looks the fiery ginge midfielder Josh Smith.

Pretty good pick there Feverish. How good are Petone compared to last season?

Almost exactly the same squad, unless Whalen and/or the Baron play which seems unlikely.

How can you say that when they couldn't even beat last years Premier League runner up (Tawa) in the Hilton Petone?

They are included on their team list on the Capital Football website so could be starters.

To be honest at least they made the final.
They also just  beat Miramar 3-2 in a pre season game.
Jimmys cut down on the dax now so he can header the ball pretty well now. Himself and miki will be our top goal scorers with Raf playing a vital role in the team. Class player.

Yes I know this is only a pre season game and no I am not getting excited however this shows
we do have the potential and finally the depth to perhaps actually compete for the number 1 spot in the Central League.

I still believe Miramar will be favourites and I dont see why everyones rating Wests to win it??

I believe Miramar, Olympic and Lower Hutt are the top teams.

That aside, how has he looked in pre-season?  And who is going to score Miramar's goals this year?

Well I gotta be right sometime.

I feel that with the squad we have now and comparing it to the others, theres nothing that tells me that they have any better shot then us.

This is a very arrogant view of the central league BG1988 with your prediction that the 3 central teams will finish bottom.  I would be very surprised if this happens.

I cant speak for Rovers but they will be mid table as per normal.  Palmy and the Naki will surprise a few this season and will survive purely because Utd is in the league (well not for long)

It's hardly arrogant when that's been the pattern for much of the Central League's recent existence.  No team from the Central Region has managed to put together any kind of decent challenge for the title, the Naki have been really disappointing, and Palmy can't seem to turn their summer side into a decent winter team.  Perhaps it will change this year, but when you look at the teams on paper do you really see any of them challenging Miramar, Wests or Lower Hutt?

I was refering to Wellington United.  Wairarapa should be fine because of the amount of money they can throw around and their pre season results show they will compete.

With the season yet to start I think is far to early to be predicting the final standings however I dont believe it will be a dog fight between the 3 central teams to stay up.  Wellington Utd will be in the mix and possibly another couple of the capital teams.

Which other capital teams do you think will be in the mix to go down?  Got to put your money where your mouth is (which is all other people are doing) james dean2009-04-03 00:04:18

I think Napier is the only Central team capable of challenging for the title but that doesnt mean that mid table isnt a fair target for the other central teams this year.  It is a bit early to write them off as relegation battlers.  All it takes is to get a bit of momentum that might throw a few spanners into the works.

Petone possibly?  They had a good run last year but they are very beatable.
Permalink Permalink
almost 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I think you're splitting hairs, if mid table in a ten team league is the aim, then they will be battling relegation.  That's not writing them off as cannon fodder, naki especially look like they've assembled their best side so far, but they will be in the mix.  There's not agoing to be a Stop Out this year.

Underdog is having a laugh. Marist got beaten tonight by Palmerston North End who play in the Central Wetern League something like 3-1. Considering they have noone of recognition, nor look likely to gain anyone they aren't looking too flash at all.

As for Wellington United, they are packing a totally different team from last year, but obviously with the money factor playing a huge role in the top half of the league, you still won't catch them on the foot of the table.

Top four: Miramar, Wests, Olympic, Hutt
Middle: Rapa, Rovers, Petone, W. United
Foot: Marist, Naki

I agree with your top 4.  I just think any of the other 6 could find themselves at the foot of the table.

Do you really think that Marist would have had a full strength team out against north end a day and a half out from that start of the season with Olympic.

I say watch out for the rapa, I think they'll finish top 3 with Miramar and Hutt.  They'll be a hard side to beat over the hill plus they'ver got real attacking quality

Rapa's line up does look good on paper, but i just dont think theyll have enough to maintain a top 3 spot this season. I defantly see us in the top 3 and i think alot of people dont share the same view.

Top 3 to be Olympic, Miramar, Lower Hutt or Wests. Dont know exaclty who will win it but i hope its a close one this year.
