Also; Does it also seem short-sighted to have denied Wests the National League spot given their current levels of performance?
If you consider how the wests defended as soon as the ball was first turned over- 3 players closing down the ball possessor, more often than not they were winning possession back very quickly indeed. Utd were forced into the long ball out to the winger, which was not effective.
Very interesting game. Should wests make it into the later stages of the Cup, will be interesting to see how they are playing against talent from the other regions.
Wondering what the overall implication is here for the Central League; Are the days of paid aged players going to come to an end? If Phoenix/Ole hoover up all the young talent, and can build teams like these, how will other clubs respond?
This is a really interesting point because I don't think it's correct to say that those two sides (United and Wests) have hoovered up all of the young talent. I also don't think this is a sea change in the way football is going to operate. Western Suburbs and Ole have been doing this to a greater or lesser degree for over a decade, back in the days of Matt Carnihan, Adam Church and Dane Raynor.
There are still good young players playing in other teams. Not en masse, for sure, but they're definitely out there.
United and Wests both have quite high player churn, as you'd expect.
Once a player reaches a certain age at United and hasn't made it to the next rung on the Phoenix ladder (the national league squad) they move out and someone else moves in. At Ole players leave for University in the US of A, although (as far as I understand it) for those with the right passport the Ole goal is to get kids into meaningful professional opportunities outside New Zealand so those players tend to be around longer.
I believe Wests lose at least three players for the last couple of rounds of the Central League by the way. Can anyone confirm? Withers, Adams and McCowatt? Those last two games are against Stop Out and Miramar so far from certain wins with a weaker squad.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Also; Does it also seem short-sighted to have denied Wests the National League spot given their current levels of performance?
Dave Wilson would certainly say it's short-sighted.
I am inclined to agree with him.
New Zealand Football would say that Wellington doesn't have the player resources to support two national league teams. Given the plight of Team Wellington over the years there is some evidence to support that assertion.
I don't know what the right answer is, but personally would like to see the Ole Madrids get a crack at the top league.

I think the list is a lot longer than that; however, unsure if all heading to States mid year or year end. Sure will be a test of squad depth!

Mini battle for academy bragging rights today. Anyone know enough about both to assess/contrast how they're doing. What is the measure of success?
Probably not, but that's never stopped me having an opinion.
Wests were miles better. Elijah Just is such a fabulous player. I hope the Phoenix are keeping an eye on him and I also desperately hope that him being at Ole doesn't rule him out of anything. Wests have a great squad, and a Kiwi squad as Declan has noted. It's really encouraging to see.
They're more direct than I think people realise. The like to play either a smothering game in the other team's defensive third or a fast break counter attacking game. They defend with every man behind the ball.
United will rue the defensive error that led to the first goal. I thought they had defended quite stoutly until then. The second goal was a superb individual finish and maybe the 7 foot Keegan Smith will wish he'd done better, but still, what a peach of a goal!
United are on average a year or two younger than Wests too don't forget.
A pretty fair result, but I think both sides will be pretty pleased with how their respective 'projects' are tracking. The challenge for both Academies is whether they can meaningfully transition players to further things. United have the inside track on that front (see Singh, Sanjay).
United have lost some seriously good players from last year's team: McGarry, Bell, Singh.
Declan's view on Nix may depend on player's passport. Think he was keen for Tyler Boyd to head elsewhere for this reason. Can't imagine new nix coaches dismissing good talent in their own backyard.

Just because a team is doing well in the Central League doesn't mean it can foot it in the National League. Big difference in the level of football !!!!
He has his team - National League Youth- from all accounts players from other clubs were included in his squad - but didn't get allot of game time. Preference was given for the OLE players to play!
Given that Wests thrashed Wairarapa who are choka with Tasman players it appears that they could do Ok. However this is their first season of dominance so I would like to see them build a trend before being seriously considered for National League.
I have watched Wests play on a number of occassions this year and they have been very impressive.
non-wellingtonian here. what does western suburbs' best xi look like - is it all teens like wellington united (the sooner they just ditch that association, the better imo)?

yeah but if results go as they should (IE they beat Lower Hutt & Palmy Marist) they will only need 2 points from those last 2 games to win the title and Rapa have Stop Out in their last game.

Best XI is mostly late teens with a couple in their early 20s (Harry Edge). Had a 15 year old come off the bench on Saturday.

Hope they had written dispensation from CF allowing this otherwise some Wairarapa lawyers may be making some phone calls !

Won't get the Ole Madrids in as long as Team Wellington is there. NZF are set in their ways that the National League must be geographically based so therefore restricts any high flyers from a region that already has a National League team - in other words, fail miserably for years on end and if no one else from your area wants a shot, you stay. Utter bollocks.

Agreed. Bollocks and precedent. Wellington already has a 2nd national league team of "high flyers". Anyway off topic, should be in national league review/future thread.

Mind games by Keinzley or legit? He's been in cracking form in the CL this season, Rapa will miss him if it's true. Chettleburgh went off injured last week as well. Should be a great game against Miramar on Saturday!
Just need the good folks at Cap football to not go finding a turf for the Nighthawks once the grounds are closed.

I think you are safe there

Bugger all on this weekend in any case, so there might be enough astros to go around!
No Central, W-League, Cap Prem /Mens/Womans, No U17 or Juniors.
I think you are safe there
Problem is Cap 9 got canned during the last Chatham Cup round so if they don't wholesale cancel everything below about Cap 2 we're likely to be found a ground.
Worst case would be on at 3:30 or something which would completely fudge my plans to go to Masterton.

Unresolved as in " its still under appeal, counter appeal, counter counter appeal etc" or Unresolved as in "our WIN 98 computer cant adjust the table to allow for a nil point game" ?
Big result for Olympic today beat Palmy Marist 4-2
means they are just 2 points off being safe from relegation
Palmy Marist have Wests next week, then Mar - think they will be going down
Wgtn Utd beat Napier 2-1 in the other game
Stop Out v Mar was postponed to Aug 5th
Lower Hutt play Wests at 5pm

bigger result looming. Reports have it as Taranaki 3-1 rapa. 15 to go.
Finishes 4-2 to Taranaki over Wairarapa. Big result helps Western Suburbs towards the title with three rounds to go and also pretty much confirms Palmerston North Marist going down.
Wests have PN Marist next week at endevour so you'd think its all in the can.
in the can for both. top and bottom. But just have to look at results like todays taranaki win and realise that on any given day there could be surprises.
Predictions. West win CL. Marist relegated to where??? Central Federation League??? . Wharfies win cap prem and then beat Havelock North (who will win the Central Federation league) and get promoted to CL... finally.

Marist would go into Central fed league - their reserves would drop into Manawatu div
Cap Prem very much up in the air, anyone of Wharfies, Petone or North Wellington could win
Playoff is a two leg game and could go anyway (as Wharfies found out last year)

Was gonna be hard at best for WaiU to get to the top but I'd say that seals it now.

If PNM go to Central Federation League they will surely lose players. Wonder who will be the benefactor of that. What teams will pick up those with aspirations to still play CL.
Whoever wins the Cap Prem would start a hot hot favourite to win the playoff for CL surely. More so then last year when Taranaki completely dominated the league and then overcome the fact that they had obviously not played sides of a higher calibre like those that are present in the cap prem. The winner of the Cap Prem this year will be well prepared, having played a higher level and quality of football at a guess.
A few big weeks ahead. Will watch this thread and some results with interest.

Some mind-blowingly terrible refereeing in there. Worth a look. Especially TT's 4th goal.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Fuck this stupid game
Some mind-blowingly terrible refereeing in there.
Looked good to me - 4th goal was fine, assume the IDFK/caution must have been for dissent maybe?
Given the position the idfk was given on, must have been dissent to the ref or OFFINABUS. I wonder if it's the later, heard by the AR, and related via comms, hence the ref coming back in (was probably repositioning for where the ball likely to fall).
