Can anyone confirm that Ian Hogg stepped up to take pen against claudelands and someone shouted out "Tony Lochhead was always better than you!" resulting in a missed or saved pen?  Quality banter if true.

i would say they are still pretty useful as there is still a strong football heritage in the region and links ave is still an imposing great ground so it is lucky they don't have home advantage…...

Peter Linney has been one of the better referees in Wellington over the past couple of years so I would say he's definitely ready for a game like that. He's reffed at a decent level for awhile, its not like it's his first day

Memo Mr Edge -- the game needs Peter Linney way more than it needs you.

Agree. Peter is one of the better refs around.

He was on a yellow already right? Was it a straight red or second yellow? Looking at that image there, I can completely see justification for a second yellow (as it stands as a still image)

Hmm, that's a bit silly. The game needs both equally as much.
Barry Tasker once said to me (only half joking) that football wouldn't exist without referees. Which I found to be a staggering claim. In fact, referees wouldn't have much to do without players...

It was a clear second yellow. Watching live I knew straight away that he was going to get sent off. Stupid late challenge from someone already on a yellow. I do wonder if it was any other player if he'd react the same way.

Was watching this game as a neutral.  Had forgotton that Edge (player) was already on a yellow.  The moment the foul was blown up I said yellow card under my breath.  It was not overly forceful but was late and broke down oppenents passing movement.  Red card in isolation, no.  Yellow card for points as above, very clear IMHO.

O and the reaction of Edge (coach).  Absolutley disgraceful and not at all surprised he was dismissed.  Again IMHO young Linney is a very good referee destined for much higher honours.  He has a good feel for the game and unlike a lot of referees, is very fit and a very good athlete.  Plus, despite what Edge said, he is far from a rookie at this level.

The football authorities should now charge Edge coach with bringing game into disrepute with his media outburst.  Referees do not always get it right but on this ocasion he did.  To be blasted in a public forum for doing his job properly should have some consequence

His comments worse than a non racist monkey noise? Sent from the dugout, cornering officials outside shed then blasting said ref wrongly and publicly... Disgrace! Big fine and 2 weeks my pick

I actually missed what he said to the ref to get sent, does anyone know?

All I heard was someone (assuming him) screaming "We can still win this with 10!!!" which fired wests supporters up.

Then later when ref stopped the game to send him into the stands (because he was still standing on the edge of the pitch) he yelled "Start watching the game ref and stop watching me!" at the referee.

Thought the ref dealt with the whole thing quite well.

I got a 4 match ban and a $250 fine for giving a ref a serve last season, so you'd expect Deckers to get something similar or worse. Mine was pretty horrific...but I didn't go after the guy post-match...or follow up in the paper :)

So post-match and Papers should add another couple of weeks and some dollars?

He'll probably get off. There was a bit of crowd noise at the game, who is to say the referee didn't hear it wrong.

I think this will have to set a standard - Is verbal abuse relevant to Physical abuse. Our racial under tones.

Haha ah I see. I was in the stands so didn't see that.

I was attempting to take the piss out of the FFA with the crowd noise comment, in case that didn't show through.

I was under the stairs/Camel-Toes, on the BBQ. But got to see the goal.

I hear that on Saturday at UH v Wests game that Pedro and Lloyd or Declan (possibly both) were very close to getting their marching order from the sideline by referee Beattie apparently they were having a real go at each other.

Think that was Lloyd. He has historical beef with Upper Hutt dating back to an U19 tourney. Terse words also carried on up in the clubbies.

Nobody too upset though. Just one of those things. Gotta love local footy!
