Yeah, it would be nice to have more than 1 or 2 other competitive teams in the league down here. It means there are about 4 'tough' games in a season, and then the rest is spent playing rubbish opposition. The southern league needs to be re-introduced if South Island football is to improve.

On another note, one of the guys in my team likely to step up to the firsts for Chatham cup action might be known to you wellington folk. Michael Jones, quick winger. Not sure who he played for in welly, but I know he was in a few age-group teams.

If a Dunedin final was to occur it would have to be at the Cale. Carisbrook's got rugby that weekend.

Sure they will mate...

Three for me, and two for them.

Without seeing Bay, Cavvy are a pretty sharp team..

They play a high tempo football, if they are able to play there normal style I would be surprised if they dont come away with the win. They are not very large in stature but make up for it with movement.

The last few Auckland teams at the Caly have had a mixture of size and speed players. Usually in the middle of the park they muscle and then try and use pace out wide/up front.

Buffon, Give us your assessment?

I watched them the other week missing a few regular players, big Japanese lad up front is the focal point for the attack (and leading goal-scorer) but is not your typical Japanese player - small and quick - much more physical.

I'll dig out the program and check who was missing, one was Chad Coombes plus a couple of other well known NZFC names.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Bay Olympic are a very strong team, and one of the form teams of the Northern League especially after a slow start.

They play good football, attempting to play through the midfield on most occasions (unless Wylie decides to hoof it) and do so with a good deal of success. They have pace and strength in all areas and have two very competent keepers amongst their ranks.

I'm sure Caversham wil be up for it and have a strong team themselves but it is actually ignorant to say they will roll Bay Olympic when they are one of the strongest regional teams in NZ this season.

Three for me, and two for them.

I think it's a bit naiive to cast out any team without seeing them play. The reality is that there aren't any sh*t teams in a Chatham cup semi. I haven't seen Bay Olympic play, so I'll have to take your word for it, Buffy, that they're a very talented side. They're a talented side in a talented league, whereas Cavy are a talented side in a comparitively sh*te league, so they haven't had a lot of games against tough opposition.

In saying that, Caversham have a strong contingent of Otago Utd (Waggett, Horner, Smith, Deeley, Jackson and Canterbury Utd (Wild, Overton, Chang) players who have all had more than a taste of National League football.

It should be a ripper of a match. I'll be there to take some photos if my match doesn't clash with it.

And I couldn't help but notice that Canty have pulled their teams out of the SI Championships... wonder why they would do that... maybe beucase they've never made a final and don't want the inevitable to happen again, that pretty much explains everything.

The game may be played on the Sunday. I hope the pitch is up to it, the Cale has often been hosting 2 games each saturday, which has taken a toll on the pitch. Mind you it's still probably better than Tonga is at this time of the season...

I do believe that CU got to the final of the NZFC last season. And I am sure you will agree that looking at the history of the Chatham Cup there is a whole lot more Canty in there than Otago.

Who was the last cantab team to have a decent run in th elast 10 years?  Cavvy have had some good results in the last 5 years and tech won it in 99

Nomads got to the quarters in 07, Halswell to the semis in 05, Western to the quarters in 04, Rangers in quarters in 03, Halswell in quarters in 02, CHCH City in semis in 01.

Ultimate winners from CHCH must outweigh those from Dunedin right? 10-2 by my rough count.

Perhaps, I couldn't work out some of the teams. I didn't know if Sunnyside referred to the bastion of CHCH's mental health system either so that might be another to CHCH's total.

Sunnyside as you mentioned is indeed the team from that part of Christchurch. Total of 12 for ChCH teams.
3 Christchurch teams have been involved in way more finals than all Dunedin teams put together.
ChCh Utd 9 for 6 wins, Western 9 for 4 [1952 shared], ChCh Tech 7 for 1, best Dunedin team is Northern 8 for 2 wins. Nomads have made finals but never won one.

Yeah I specifically said in the last 10 years but ok...

Not sure how results from the 50s are relevant to matches being played in 2010

Dunedin Tech made the 08 final only to lose to ECB. I'd like to see a proper national draw in future cups, because only 1 team can come out of the south island the way they have been 'drawing' it. This year it was lucky enough to be Cavy.

By the way can we please stop this 'Canterbury is sh*te' 'Otago is worse' nonsense. Bring back the southern league and we'll see who really comes out trumps. And we'll see an improvement in both leagues. :)

Agree with both of the last two posts was just putting some detail to another persons post.

A few of the stronger clubs in the Mainland league want to get back to a south Island league.
It needs to happen next year to keep the impetus from the World Cup focused on improving the local game.

And the cost of running a club. Just remember Nelson are in the Mainland region. How many Dunedin teams would be up for that? Or Invergiggle? We would definitely put our hand up for it, eh Vim. then we could stop all this dribble about who is better blah blah blah ........

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

Semi final week. All 4 teams in good form coming into this week. Should be two decent ties.

Three for me, and two for them.

How many of those teams beat a side from outside of the Mainland region?

I think Halswell were the last side to do that 5 years ago, and having watched that game they were bloody lucky.
