I was surprised at how physical Wellington College was in this game. They weren't shy in putting themselves about all, and didn't seem intimidated by a mens team at all.

Don't know anything about the comments, winding up or psychological digs or such, but I felt there were some niggly tackles going in from both sides, as for Jamie protecting Marist - nah.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Id like to think we (varsity) suprised a few people in our game against Lower Hutt, scored the first goal and went into halftime at 1 all and stayed that way untill the last 25 minutes. Although lower hutt managed to hit the woodwork a few times

True, good to have another persons P.O.V :p
Did you not see our No.5 complaining to Jamie? To be fair he shouldn't have and that's part of the experience etc (he was playing U15's last year) but the fact still remains that he was struck in the head and spat on, I certainly know I would react in a similar manner if the Ref didn't do anything.

It seems that a few of the games have been quite close with the wins coming in the last 15min or so

well said matty
it was a tremendous effort from all of us. I really think that for about an hour we played like champs, and in the end their skills and fitness paid off. Some of those south americans are really good, nothing to say about that.

it's a pity though cause if we managed to slot another one in, who knows what would've happened.

Oh well let's concentrate on the league.

By the way, well played matty. Wish I could say the same about myself!!

thought that was an interesting match report, marist are generally a good natured side and seems like they may have lost their discipline which obviously almost cost them the game. well done university, I think that is a respectable result against a class side.

can't wait for our match tomorrow, should be an excellent match and I know that if we play well we are really going to test olympic!

SJay - I think you might be reflecting on the game today with one eye... I was there, and it was the Wgtn Coll bench that were cheering when their team committed fouls.  Yep, Marist committed some fouls too, but that happens, and the ref called it as he saw it...

Credit where credit is due - you're a good side and you showed it, but Marist had you stitched in the last 10, and that's what made all the difference.

Fair point-thats why I asked for others opinions :p, Was that the whole game? Because when I was on the bench I don't remember anyone cheering when we committed fouls, but cheered when we were awarded fouls, simple logic yeah?

yeah sh*t happens, your thoughts on the whole elbow/spitting incident???

I think that fitness wise we had them, skill maybe even but probably the experience at that level is where they topped us. That's just my opinion and I'd love to hear what you have to say! :D

It seemed to be happening more at the beginning of the 2nd half.  I didn't see the elbow/spitting incident, so I can't really comment sorry.

I think you're right when you say that lack of experience at that level let you down, but to be fair, you stepped up well - I never would have picked you for a college side had I not known.

Ahh true true, still don't remember haha yeah no worries, no one apart from those on the field seemed to see it!

Thanks, I think it has been a great learning curve for all involved, Hilton Petone was great too, we managed to win that which sort of prepared us for Chatham Cup but not the same quaity of teams!

Hey SJay. I am surprised (shocked) that if you say what the captain of Marist did is true. I play in the same Wellington Futsal team as him and he has never come across as that type of player. Fiery at times perhaps, but to resort to elbowing and spitting I never thought he would do. The Marist coach is also my futsal coach and I can tell you he was sh*t scared of playing you lot before todays game. He already knew you were the better footballing side, but in mens football (which you will learn eventually), physicality and psychological advantage is key to victory. The score line of 3-2 suggests it was a very close game and you are unlucky not to have progressed further. Good luck for the Premier Youth League and Nationals, your team has the capability of winning both.

Yeah, to be honest I didnt expect it of a mens team but hey u take it how it comes! True, they did get in our heads towards the end. When we went down 3-2 people turned on each other a bit but it's all learning for us. Next year will be the best team in a while. Cheers Plowright?

Wellington certainly put on good weather for the players and fans to watch.  Wellington College have put out several good performances over the last ten years. Now that Upper Hutt are out who should I go watch in the next round?? Recommendations please.

I played in this game as well, for Marist, and having read the rather long match report I must say that I disagree on a number of fronts.

I did not see the spitting or elbowing incident...whilst elbowing does happen in football, at all levels, there is every possibility that these things happen accidentally, or through some poor technique going up for the ball. The spitting accusation I am shocked by, I did not hear anything about that during or after the game and I find it hard to believe.

The comment that Wellington Coll were by far the better team also surprises me, hence I give my thoughts on how the game went. I agree that Coll came out very strongly in the first 20 mins, and got the 1st goal (a long ball played by the keeper over the defence and well finished by the striker).

However they seemed to lose concentration immediately and conceeded a goal basically from the kick off. The rest of the half was reasonably even.

The second half had barely begun when the referee awarded college a penalty. Being the keeper I was pretty close to the incident and, with the ball going out for a corner, 2 players running back clipped each other (both looking at the ball) and a penalty was awarded. The penalty was missed, but the ref awarded it to be retaken for encroachment, and the retake was scored for 2-1.

Marist then continued to dominate the 2nd half (I would also question the comment about the fitness of the respective teams), having made one save in the first half, I had nothing else to do except pick up a few long balls in the 2nd. After a number of fouls around the Coll box (marist players would not agree they were being "protected").....eventually marist scored the equaliser, and though the coll keeper made some good saves including a 1 on 1, marist eventually got winner. A final shot from Coll went just over the bar late.

Coll played well, but I wouldnt assert that they were the better side, but Marist had far more chances, and just because they scored the equaliser and winner in the last 15, doesnt mean Coll deserved to win the match, in my opinion.

The marist coach is certainly firey, everyone knows that, but there was a lot of negative shouting from both supporters/benches...that is football...Equally, a coll player could have been sent from the field early in the game for swearing at the referee (as a Marist player was last week) but these things happen.

Anyways, I normally don't feel strongly enough to go into really long posts...but I, obviously, strongly disagreed with some of the comments made (and maybe I am being 1-eyed also, we do always look at our team first)....

I also thank those people who have commented in support for the way marist plays and their character...

Cheers, I shall read it now. I remember back in the mid late 70's when Harcourt Park was recognised as the best pitch in the Wellington Region. It was like a snooker table. Today an Upper Hutt guy hit a high ball into the penalty box and as the keeper jumped for it, it hit a divot and nearly bounce over his head! Was a scare but was also funny to see.

Fair enough, for me the elbowing incident was the fact that it happened off the ball and with no provocation. I am aware that the physicality of football sometimes becomes an issue.

good point- we did switch off, lack of experience i could blame it on or just going to sleep.
I would question Marist dominating the second half, yes there were numerous fouls from either side but it seemed a "you tackled me hard so I'm going to tackle you hard" scenario.
My comment on Col deserving to win the match was based on the whole game, with strong pasages of play being had and being rather unfortunate at times but hey that's life!
Isn't swearing a yellow or is it a straight red? I think it may be different for a player than for a coach, but correct me if I'm wrong!

I'm not trying to have a go at Marist for being "dirty or cheating" I supose I was still a little annoyed when I first posted at my team-mates treatment during the game and also after when shaking hands with Marist. I do have to say some of the taunts after the game, the one I heard from your captain being completely unneccesary and did nothing to help the situation. I find that there is no need for a mens team who have just won to drop to that level, it is what I might expect from losing teams at U15 level! Your team had just won a hardly contested game, but certain players decided not to be gracious in victory.

All credit due to Marist for holding out against us, Keeper, what did you think of the winger's volley off the 3rd restart? the one i thought you tipped over the bar but was a goal kick.

So congratulations on your win, good luck for your season and look forward to possibly playing you next year!

Was that when the score was 3-2? I had thought it was a cross at first so had to back pedal pretty fast when it looked like it was beginning to drop in....the amount of ribbing i get from my team about being chipped (e.g. like the first goal) I would never have lived it down... it was a good effort, just clipped the top of the bar with my hand underneath the bar.

The one I was most impressed with though was the volley from, I believe, one of your strikers...fortunately it was shot from far enough away that I could make it across and palm it wide, but it was certainly great technique.

Gamesmenship is common on the field but surely is not appropriate when playing against a school team.  There has been other theads about the youngsters playing for Stop Out and the common theme is you play your normal physical game against them but nothing more, no reason or point in trying to trash talk and play mind games.  We want these guys to do well as they will be the strength of our league and possibly our own teams in the years to come.  Well, maybe not Marist after this weekend.

Talking trash after the game to a college team?  I would say that player(s) at the very least has a confidence issue about being betterd by a kid.

9 men or15 Naenae were never in the game apart from the first 10 minutes, and after the extacy pills wore off we dominated and should have scored 16.

If Naenae are prepared to come and fight us off the pitch and dive in at every ball then, well, to quote a good friend of mine...

...thats what you get.

So much for the upset.

I feel I need to make note of the performance of Marius Lacatus in BNU's game against Wests yesterday.

It's hard to find positives in a 9-1 loss, but ML was superb yesterday.  On countless occasions, he made a certain TW defender look ordinary as time and again he beat him with close control and skill down the left flank.

The standout moment of the match (as far as BNU was concerned) was our solitary goal.  Marius picked up the ball wide on the left, perhaps 35 yards from goal.  He proceeded to beat 4-5 Wests defenders, including a couple who had more than one go at him, and reached the byeline before cutting inside.  After such a brilliant mazy run, the final pass is often poor by comparison, but in this case it was perfect - on a plate for our guy to knock the ball into the net.

I've played football for a long time and I can't remember a better "assist".  Magnificent.

Just finally, well done to Wests who - as the scoreline probably suggests - were comfortably better than us.  However, not one player tried to rub it in, during or after the match.  They played it hard but fair; a good bunch of guys in my opinion.  Good luck to them.

Over and out.

i thought we played excellently until the first sending off which really hurt us because it left us exposed wide where olympic attack alot. to be honest, I thought the ref had a complete mere and I'm not just saying that was towards us, because it went both ways, a bit gutted I got sent off but hell, that's football, my second tackle there was no intent and I barely touched him not sure how he managed to fly 5 yards further but the ref sure believed it. I think Olympic for a higher league side showed alot of improfessionalism, in the first half, when the ref wasn't looking, mikey halikias took a big boot at my leg and I've got a large mark down my leg to prove this as well, I expected alot better from a player in that grade. I thought Paul Wheeler was probably the best player on the park and easily matched olympics midfield. One other incident was where Barry Lewis took a big boot at our sudanese guy in the corner and our guy got booked, that was an absolute joke.

Later in the week accordidng to NZ Soccer, they recently put this up

Cashmere, MAGS provide Chatham Cup upsets -->

May 18, 2008

AUCKLAND Christchurch Division 1 side Cashmere Wanderers were the giant killers of the 81st Chatham Cups first round on Saturday, upsetting four-time winners Western 3-1 in the pick of weekend action.

When Westerns Sam Miles cancelled out Lucas Kavkas first half opener in the 65th minute, things looked to be back on track for the Mainland Premier side, but Alistair Melville restored Cashmeres lead five minutes later and Mark Wit made sure of the upset with Wanderers third goal in the dying minutes, as Western threw everyone including the keeper forward in search of a last gasp equaliser.

Joining Western and qualification-round-casualties Seatoun, as eliminated previous winners are Nelson United, two-times winners Manurewa and Christchurch United, although Western are the only side still playing in the top flight of their respective region.

The South Islands most successful Chatham Cup side with six wins, Christchurch United went down 1-3 to Ferrymead Bays, while Northern League first division side Manurewa lost 2-1 to Whangarei-based US1 Premiership side North Force, and 1976 winners Nelson United were beaten 2-0 in a Cup derby by Mainland Premier League leaders Nelson Suburbs.

Meanwhile, Aucklands Mount Albert Grammar will fly a lone flag for schoolboy football in the second round over Queens Birthday weekend thanks to a stunning 6-0 Sunday stroll over Northern League first division side Western Springs.

Also in Auckland, former All White Mark Elrick scored twice for New Zealand Celtic Supporters in a 4-2 win over Otorohanga as the Sunday leaguers put their name into the hat for the second round draw, where they will be joined by current holder Central United (pictured) along with the 11 other Northern League clubs and four Southern Premier League sides that received first round byes.

In Wellington, last years runners up Western Suburbs fired the weekends equal biggest win, demolishing Brooklyn-Northern United 9-1 to show their sights are firmly set on appearing in a third straight final in early September, while Central League strugglers Stop Out were made to work hard for their 1-0 win over near neighbours Eastbourne who currently sit four divisions below them.

The draw for the second round of the Chatham Cup will be made later this week.
