Possibly.

Have not been to Endeavour this season so I wasn't sure which pitch was being used by the first team.  I may be on the other one.

Are Marist going to play at Bell Park if they win?

Its been over 12 hours and not 1 post about Western Suburbs getting what may be seen as a favourable draw. Thats a nice change from last season.

The draw is never rigged, unless a Wellington team is playing Central in Auckland

I am sure Mar would rather play a local game against Tawa or Olympic (which on form should take care of quite easy) rather than shelling out $1500 to get up to the naki for a match...

Wests get a handy round...

Napier will find it tough coming down here to bell park, but not so tough at kilbirnie park..

For Petone, just another hard battle against either team..

Chatham Cup minnows handed dream tie

-->AUCKLAND - Te Puke AFC the lowest ranked club left in the last 32 of the Chatham Cup have been handed a dream date in Wednesdays third round draw with a home tie against current holders Central United on June 14.

While Central were popping the champagne after clinching a rare Northern League and Chatham Cup double with victory in last years epic cup final, Te Puke were patting themselves on the back for a well earned promotion from the second division of the Bay of Plenty League.

They now sit atop of division one but theres still a combined Waikato-BOP league and two divisions of Northern League football between them and a Central club that has featured in 6 of the last 11 Chatham Cup finals.

Not that Te Puke co-coach Shaun McIlwaine is complaining.

Im chuffed with that draw, McIlwaine said.

Its gonna be fantastic to have the best players in the country at Litt Park.

McIlwaine says the club who edged out more fancied Rotorua 5-4 in Queens Birthday action is enjoying the buzz created by a cup run and just happy to still have the name in the hat.

We turned up on Monday at eleven for beans on toast thinking maybe it was our last game and well sit down for beans on toast again before Central arrive.

We have to give a team like Central respect for all that theyve won and sure we may get beat but if the lads give 120 percent and we have some luck, who knows? - Cardiff City did it, didnt they?

Does anyone know anything about a change in format this year?  I read on rab smith's southern football website (www.soccerotago.co.nz) a comment about regions needing to find a regional winner.  Does that mean the competition goes national even later this year?

I can tell you from year on year experience that the draw in the Dunedin region is genuinely suspicious.  Barry van Gorp decides the seedings himself, including seeding my side University 9 one year when we finished 4th in the league the year before meaning we had to play an extra round rather than get a bye.  And teams who get the bye (usually Caversham, Dunedin Tech, usually Roslyn +1) always play the second division Invercargill teams or random one club Central Otago in the next round.  In fact for three years or so the Dunedin sides draw ended up like this at the end of the roudn of 16 (I think):

Dunedin Tech v Roslyn

Caversham vs some Christchurch side

Unsurprisingly Caversham, considered to be the best equipped to demonstrate Dunedin's prowess end up playing a Chch side, which is the tougher game.  I will try and fidn the records to back this up.

Well the gap between Central League and Premier League has been identified and going on the Chat Cup results the past two rounds.  It is huge...  I was one that thought it was closer, but it simply is not...  Petone was often used as an example of a team coming up from Prem league and fitting straight in to the CL.  They are an anomaly and dominated the Prem league for several years, unlike the current crop of hopefulls.

The latest round offered one of the great levellers in football - weather.  On Monday Noah was probably somewhere in his ark it was that wet.. and yesterday, the wind was that brutal that at Newtown Park the spots were being blown off the leopards. However, no one got close.  in the four matches between the leagues (Wharfies, Tawa, Wairarapa, I Bay) scored 3 and the CL scored 18...  If it had been dry I think there would have been a lot more Central League goals.

Next point to consider, most of the games played have been between the top teams in the Prem league and the top teams in the CL. So what about the bottom teams in the CL?
Other threads have stated that the top teams in the Prem would kill Stop Out and such.  I think after the recent recruiting S/O have done and the obvious gap displayed in the two leagues that S/O would be to strong for the Prem League front runners.  Someone will get thier chance at year end, and they may not be playing S/O as PN and Diamonds are clearly in trouble.   But based on what the Prem League has displayed, there is not as much threat that some, at least me,  once thought

I would have to say that both playing for the first 11 at wellington college in my younger days and now playing for marist, the only difference is the physicality. Its boys vs men bascially.

JonnyCash, Petone were a very good side over the past couple of Premier seasons, but they certainly didn't dominate the league.  Both Tawa and Wharfies pushed them hard last year, and they were beaten by Stop Out a couple of years ago (2005).  What is clear is that at the top of the Central League there are some very, very good sides.  But Petone have shown that Wgtn United in the last couple of seasons and Stop Out this year aren't great sides and would probably struggle to win the Premier grade this year.  But the presence of Taranaki and Marist has cushioned them from dropping out of the league.

North Shore expelled from Chatham Cup

June 10 2008

AUCKLAND Auckland Sunday League side New Zealand Celtic Supporters were handed a Chatham Cup lifeline on Tuesday after their second round opponents North Shore United were disqualified from footballs national knockout competition for fielding an ineligible player.

New Zealand Celtic lost the June 2 match 0-4 but the result was reversed by New Zealand Football, meaning the Sunday leaguers will now face Hibiscus Coast in the third round on Sunday at the Allen Hill grounds they rent from North Shore.

James Meichtry who scored North Shores final goal as a second half substitute was subsequently deemed ineligible by New Zealand Football as he had not met the dual criteria of being registered with North Shore for seven days and playing in two matches on different days prior to appearing for the club in the Chatham Cup.

Six time winners North Shore received clearance for Meichtry on May 30 and fielded the player in two games on Saturday May 31.

New Zealand Footballs competitions manager Glyn Taylor said the decision to disqualify North Shore wasnt taken lightly and while it was regrettable for the competition to lose a club with such a fine cup pedigree there was no room in the regulations to let them continue.

Regardless of whether it was an intentional move or an administrative oversight on the part of the club, New Zealand Football had no option but to disqualify North Shore United from the Chatham Cup to protect the competitions integrity and for the sake of all other clubs who have followed the rules, Taylor said.

The decision to expel the Devonport-based club means North Shores quest for a record-equalling seventh Chatham Cup title must now wait for another year and adds another twist in a cup season already littered with upsets and drama.

North Shore joins a growing list of now-eliminated clubs to have won the 85-year-old trophy in a current or former guise. With sixteen of those clubs knocked out after two full rounds just eight remain among the final 32 teams eyeing a place in final at North Harbour Stadium in the first weekend of September.

Petone went unbeaten for most of the season last year and then dropped a few games when it didn't matter, and their young guys keep getting better with experience plus team wellington youth experience, throw in big Jim and you have quite a handy mix.

Diamonds and Stop Out probably have the same general talent base as the top Prem League teams but they also have 3 or 4 players on the next level...  I think that is the difference... not sure that the Prem League teams have those players, i may be wrong.. PLus they have players used to playing at the quicker level...  it is hard to tell, and the CHatham Cup didnt really help, as the Prem teams had to play the top CL teas...  We probably will have to wait till playoffs.. I would rather that a non local team dropped out i.e. taranaki or Marist...

Firstly, if you check the results from last year you'll find that's just not true.

Secondly, Petone are sitting second and have beaten not only Wellington United and Stop Out, but Olympic as well as pushing Miramar hard on the first day of the season, plus Lower Hutt.  So if the gap is as big as you've said it is, not only have they bridged the gap to the middling sides, they've bridged it to the title contenders.

Personally i think there has been some coasting from sides like United and Stop Out because the other sides have been so average that relegation has neever been a serious concern.

As the Conchords would say   "...you know when I'm down to my socks, its business time...."

Central Region
  1. Lower Hutt City v Napier City Rovers Bell Park
  2. Petone v Wellington Olympic - Petone Memorial
  3. Inglewood v Miramar Rangers - Karo Park
  4. Western Suburbs v Maycenvale Utd - Endeavour Park
Intersting matches, as usual...  Two all CL games that could go any way.
Nothing really between the Greeks and Pet One, unless Raff is still suspended. Then pendalum swings towards Pet One. Otherwise a lively game in store with cards, goals and lots of mustaches.

Napier is hitting some ripe form and Hutt is just ripe at the moment, but it is at Bell Park so that levels things a little.  Either team could win and wouldn't be surpirsed if penalties was the result....

Wests hosting the Mayc's, are they sharing a bus with Napier on the way down?  Do they have a pre game ritual of doing the macaroni in cohesion on the halfway line..could be intimidating for Wilsons tots... maybe their only chance...

Mar up at Inglewood...   yikes....  good lucks guys.. are the rumours true that Mar will play a double header getting thier match with Team Naki out of the way??  If so, two comfortbale wins likely...

What is going on in the rest of the country??

Celtic Supporters Club, Taupo and Te Puke - go get em boys....

Halswell that ends well for these guys?? Who knows, I don't have much knowledge of anything in the south... if that offends you southern men then have a look at the picture on the left, thats my response

No offence taken, wouldn't want to smell your finger anyway..
Tech for the win, strong team but had a couple of strange results lately.
Other game could go either way, probably would go for Cavvy on a decent ground.

I'll give you what I know.. soft spot for Cash, American History 5 is class

There is a real split in the Southern League. The top three teams Dunedin Tech, Caversham and Roslyn Wakari are head and above the other teams.
Dunedin Tech is probably the strongest team but has been upset by Roslyn and then had a draw with Mosgiel. They are probably stronger than the Cavvy team that Wests played 2006 or 2007.
One of their previous Cup winning players Aaron Burgess has returned to the club and is looking good (don't think he was fit enough/sharp when playing for Otago United). A couple of comments from the sideline is that they are as strong as the Otago United team, they are not but could give them a run for the money on their day.
Roslyn and Cavvy are sharp in the Southern League but do not have the quality across the field to trouble the Northern teams. Watched Cavvy demolish a rattled Green Island last week. Nice quick movement, not at the same level as they were when they played Wests.
Not sure whether Wests is physical but Cavvy looked light weight against them.
Northern have no chance to go any further, they try hard but lack the ball movement.

Summed it up nicely..

Once the injury prone Dave Walker (went to Canterbury United, always injured) went off with a sprained hammy, Cavvy were outclassed.
Physically Wests were too strong for Cavvy and once out muscled game was over.
Cavvy are not as strong this year, seem to lack the depth across the paddock.

Tech are the only chance down this way and they have looked vunerable of late.

Tech are not that flash down there, they got solidly rolled by a team a division below them 7-3 and then only just beat them a couple of weeks later 2-1.

I think Nelson are the only team that are of any substance in the south island

As a spectator and support for Wellington College I left the ground both proud and disappointed. Proud that Wellington College players played with more maturity than their opponents.  Disappointment in the way Marist conducted themselves.

Being an ex martist player (different code) I thought that Marist stood for pride and fairplay.  Play hard and never give up.  When the whistle goes be the first to offer a hand and invite your competiitor in as an equal.  Football in this club must be different.

Marist were behind from the onset and had to0 resort to intimidation and foul discusting play to dominate their opponents. Cheap shots are one aspet, however spitting in the face is not.  The fact is if the ref had seen it the offender would have been shown the red card.

Taunting after the game by the same player only added to the discusst and resentment.  Being an ex marist player I felt ashamed.

I witnessed some great skills and the only draw back of the college team is that while they stood up for themselves they tried to play football.  What would have been done in the old days was for one play to "sort" out the offending opposition player.  And if I were him the games ahead when these lads leave col and take on the club later I would be looking over my shoulder.

Well done College. Despite the result you played the better football.  Well done parents for being vocal on the side line in the face of foul behaviour.
