Pretty much a Capital Premier v Central League round...

Naenae could be the surprise result, they are a pretty physical side which works well against Olympic...  Although, Wairarapa seem to play better away from home, plus there big fijians could be to much muscle for Mars 18 year olds. Stop Out - you NEED to win...Petone Wellington could go anyway...School boys could get through again.. Upper Hutt IBay is a coin toss and the rest look pretty straight forward...

Olympic              __    Naenae               __
Western Suburbs      __    Brooklyn Northern    __
Miramar Rangers      __    Wairarapa United     __
Marist               __    Wellington College   __
Upper Hutt           __    Island Bay           __
Eastbourne           __    Stop Out             __
Lower Hutt           __    University           __
Petone               __    Wellington United    __
Tawa                 __    Kapiti Coast         __
Stokes Valley        __    Waterside Karori     __

I reckon Naenae can upset there.

Naenae tackle hard and late and are very niggly.  Plus they have some skillful players through the middle.  It is definately a recipe to get under the greeks skin...

Central league sides getting kocked out early in recent years

2005 North Wellington 3-2 Miramar (9 men, an ex Mar defender sprinting off then kicking a     fence after getting a red, early exit for defending champs)

2007 Marist 2-0 Lower Hutt

They are more recent ones of central league sides getting knocked out early i can best remember, others?

Didn't NW call in some of their all dominant Masters side to strengthen the first team ?

From memory they did, a striker who was 40+ (i think) lead to them to a famous victory and a humiliating experince for miramar

this year is a good opportunity for a Wellington Side to win again.  The Auckland league is a shambles since the split and the big clubs are not as strong - Waitak and Central

From memory, Wests have lost only 1 Chatham Cup game in regular time in the last 4 years.

2004        They were knocked out by Lower Hutt from memory in the early rounds (3-4?).

2005        They were kicked out for fielding an ineligible player during their victory over Petone.

2006        After the game ended 0-0 after extra time. They defeated Eastern Suburbs in the final in penalties, thanks to Phil Imarys heroics.

2007        They finished runner-up as were defeated by Central in penalties after the game ended 0-0 after extra time.

We beat Miramar when I was playin for Wests back in 02 (i think it was 02)

3-1 i think, Satos got a double.....Michael Smith with the 3rd......was a bit of an upset as
Miramar were still "The" powerhouse of Wgtn football.

A kinda upset maybe? The Mar had everyone playing.....Both Littles, Birch, Buttercup, Hedge, Harahap maybe?

I can see Eastbourne being quietly confident of beating a truely sh1t Stop Out outfit. Toffeeman2008-05-16 15:22:29

Yep I remember that game, pretty sure it was 2003, think it was a Monday night game at Porirua Park, Miramar missed a penalty, but Wests were deserving of their victory.

Miramar managed to pick themselves up and defeat East Auckland 3-2 in the national league final 2 weeks late, thanks to a hat trick from a now Wests player Rupert Ryan

Anyone's thoughts on Marist-Wellington College?

As a player I found the behavior of the Marist players (coach included) and especially the captain very disapointing!
The coach nearly (but should have) been sent for chat back/abuse. The Captain of the team...Shocking in one word. Elbowing a player in the head, Spitting on that same player, both incidents went un-addressed by the Ref. And after the game he proceeded to taunt the WC players "Go back to school". If this is the captain of Marist, whatever respect I did have for Marist, is long gone.
Being a College player and also u19's I don't know if that sort of behavior is the norm, it could be but somehow I doubt it. I understand defenders standing on attackers feet at corners and trying to get in their heads "Go cry to Mama" another taunt from the Marist winger. But I think that this is too far. The spirit of the game was lost and it's times like these I wonder why I play "the beautiful game".

The Ref,Jamie, I don't know his last name, did little to help. Waving away obvious fouls, and when he did blow for bookable if not Red card offences, no cards were given. A perfect example being a two footed studs up tackle on the WC winger Corey Larsen, who spent the next 2 minutes on the ground. Only a foul was given and the tackle EVEN brought Charlie Howe to put his two cents worth in. Whilst on the topic of the Ref, I believe that Jamie is one of the top 3 or so refs in wellington and today could have just been a shocker for him. But having attended a CBR course with him instructing and being told very clearly that Spitting on players and striking are bookable or Red card offences. I find it a case of "Do as I say,not as I do". Jamie let incidents  go unnoticed until it escalated to players being very frustrated and having a bit of argy bargy. Believe it or not, it seemed that the ref was protecting the Marist players.

I am not trying to blame the loss on the Ref or Marist players, Wellington College were most deffinately the better side, they played better football, dominated the game and should have won. But naivety at playing Mens football let them down, a few silly mistakes that they should learn from.
But I find that having to resort to the lows that Marist did to win a game of football when they knew that the younger boys were more skilled and fit is rather appalling. I doubt that Marist shall proceed past the next round of the Chatham Cup.

Here endeth my rant

I may have missed things but that's why I ask other supporters or players at the game to comment

Today I attended the Island Bay V Upper Hutt chatham cup match. IB won 3-1 with 10 men. IB opened the scoring after 8 minutes. They had a N0. 7 and a N0. 14 who really stood out for them. Upper Hutt equalised a short time later and then IB took in a 2-1 half time lead. They lost their player about midway through he 2nd half (2nd yellow card) and UH missed the resulting penalty. IB were the better team for most of it, yet UH always seemed to threaten but not finish. The ref copped a bit of stick but I thought he and the Linesmen got it pretty much right and did really well.

A good game for those who did attend and my first sojourn back to a game at Harcourt park since my last playing days there in the early 80's. I thought about that at half time and realised it was near 30 years ago this season when I made my debut for Tararua United as a 17 year old. Where has all that time gone??

Back luck Upper Hutt, well done Island Bay. It was an interesting game to watch. Some players trying the spectacular when the simple would have sufficed, yet thats what it's all abot, trying that something different.

I think I'll be going up to Harcourt Park more often as the old enthusiasm is making a comeback. This time of course as a spectator.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I went to Endeavour Park today to watch Wests play BNU.  Not too sure of the score.  I think Wests won.

i hear what you are saying - but some people might say - if you want to play with the men, then you are going to have to man up. It is unfortunate though if the ref did not rule to the letter. I do not consider Marist a dirsty team - and they were obviously trying to muscle out their younger opponents - which is bound to happen. Brian is a fiery customer though..

SO no upsets in the Cup (apart from BNU not losing by 10). Have to wait until the next round then

I understand that, but manning up being elbowing/stiking and spitting???? I know that Jamie is a quality ref but just not his day i think. They may not be "dirty" but the behavior and way in which the way game was played is what got to me, sure your're winning but theirs no need to gloat, rub it in or insult the loosing team especially when you are the lesser skilled team and the game is finished! Yes they tried to muscle out us, but in most cases we were the same size, so didn't really apply, more the physcological side of it which I guess is what happens at mens level, if so I don't think I shall want to play mens level in wellington if this is the norm!
