Back on topic. At this stage why don`t they combine all the north island teams together? Then it is a coach trip to the game. It would make for a long day. Travelling to or from Wellington/Auckland. It seems that it is weighted in favour of Auckland teams. How would the best teams left in Wellington go against Takapuna or Manurewa mid-table in the northern 2nd division or Papakura struggling in the northern 1st division or Mt Albert Grammar school?

Cost would be a big reason. Theres still 32 teams and 5 more rounds to find the winners. Could any Wellington club afford 5 trips to Auckland?

Isnt this Fallons lads that is competitive whatever the grade they play in? They have lost a few players from what I hear so while they are rebuilding they must be doing alright to be on highighted on NZ Football website and all....also from a college perspective, Wellington College normally play in the Chatham Cup too....but they don't seem to be the team they used to be....

Watched Olympic play Uni from the bench on Monday, they looked quite strong without much effort needed, some very good young guys. 1st goal was a cracker by De Gregorio. Wairarapa could be a dark horse got some older guys with some experience like the fijians and also Tony Jamieson in goal. steelo2007-06-06 23:31:51

Yeah the uni looked good against Olympic, but i think the final ball let them down when they had possesion. One way traffic tho.

Raf's goal was stunning, Eric Cantona Anyone????

I actually had this one down as a possible upset.  I saw Uni play the other day, and thought that they looked ok, and the Greeks are always the team I believe are more likely to self-implode during one of these games.

I certainly picked this one ahead of Marist turning over LH

If you read the statement again, I said I had it down as a possible upset.  That is the thing about upsets, is that it is a result you wouldn't have normally picked to happen, such as the team that is 3rd in the central league losing to the team that is 3rd from bottom in the Wgtn Capital.

My logic was based on Olympic being the sort of club that is susceptible to upsets.  I remember them losing to one of the low Hawkes Bay teams on penalties one year in the mid 90's, when they were flying high in the Central League.

I know that result because I was playing for Olympic in that game.................

Yes and if you read your statement again you will see that you picked Olympic's upset over Lower hutt's.

Olympic are known for sometimes falling to smaller sized teams, but if you consider we had our players back and Raf was playing then, i dont logically see an upset there at all and after coming off a 3-2 win away at Palmy. Plus that factile was in the 90's. Things have changed now, back in the 90's Britney Spears had hair.

Thats the way i see it, we all are entitled to our opinons so theres no right or wrong here.

If you dont mind me asking Frankie, who are you?

So it could mean one more trip to Auckland for a Wellington team or vice versa. Cost might well be the problem. I just wonder if the best teams from the Wellington region are given the best chance to progress. Or do they eliminate each other? I suppose we can compare the relative strenghts of the two regions in the later rounds. By the way does anyone know what league Taupo play in?

I think you make a really good point about teams from Wellington eliminating each other.  Maybe the current Federation model is limited and needs to be extended to a regional basis.  I mean anywhere within 5 hours drive is doable for a team from Wellington and vice versa.  They do it every weekend.  Mind you, I'm definitely looking forward to Miramar v Olympic.  Why the game isn't on a Sunday I will never know.

De Gregorios goal was stunning and took the wind out of our sails early i thought. I wasnt trying to suggest Uni matched Olympic, Olympic definately a class above and with the youngsters will only improve. Also had definite quality at set peices.

Sanday, Taupo play in the Waikato BOP Football federation league. That competition includes sides such as Matamata Swifts, Rotorua United (amalgam of Suburbs and City I think), Te Awamutu, Claudelands Rovers, Hamilton North, Huntly, Whakatane Town, Ngongataha etc.
Now should Cambridge fail to either finish 1st or 2nd in the Northern League 2nd Division and gain promotion to the 1st division, this is the league they will find themselves in. Also should the likes of Melville United or Ngaruawahia United finish in the bottom two of the Northern League 1st division, they too will go into the federation league. Northern League Div 2 is history after this season and some old clubs are likely to either go out of existence, or end up playing lower league football in the Auckland or Waikato regions.

Clubs who sign up to Chatham cup could pay into a travel equalization fund. This could be payed out on the average home and away travel costs for each team at the end of each round.
Granted the buy in price for small clubs may be to great but it would be better than the best Auckland teams knocking out the lesser teams from the upper north Island only to meet up with a South Isaland our Wgtn team who has done the same.

Instead of Olympic knocking out Wairarapa they could be pitted againts a Hamilton side.  Auckland Gramar play Palmerston etc. We could see a Wairarapa Side knock out Auckland city if they had a good day.

ok to answer a few questions that have been asked:
1: No there are no curtain raisers prior to A League games the aussies do not allow them.
2: cost is the main reason clubs dont treat the cup with more respect. would be great to open it up earlier but it just not viable. NZS are doing a review at the moment to come up with a new option/proposal.
3: wellington CL clubs already travel bigger distances ie the likes of gissy is a 7 hour drive and most clubs are driving as they can not afford to fly. from wgtn for a team is 7k to get to gissy and back. since the lottery fountations do not pay out the money they use to most clubs are in bif $$$$ trouble unless they have a finicial backer like say wests.

Just my 2 cents worth.

1. The chatham cup was played before an A League game last season
3. Most clubs dont drive, L/hutt, Olympic, Miramar, Wests all Fly, Wgtn Utd drive, unsure what Stop Out do, therefore most clubs dont drive.

Stop Out fly.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Wairarapa United injury free for Chatham Cup clash
13.06.2007
BY GARY CAFFELL

Wairarapa United have no injury worries going into their Chatham Cup fourth round soccer match with Palmerston North End at Palmerston North on Sunday.

Concerns over leg injuries to strikers Pita Rabo and Andy Robertson have dissipated and manager Phil Keinzley said a full strength side would be taking the field for what is now being treated as the high point of the Wairarapa United season.

No Wairarapa team has ever ventured past the second round of the Cup competition and victory this weekend will see Wairarapa United through to the last 16.

Their two wins to date, 1-0 over Stop Out and 2-0 over Wellington United, have come against higher graded central league sides but the fact Palmerston North End plays at a club level similar to that of Wairarapa United doesn't mean the standard of opposition will be any less.

Is this a chance for Wairarapa to make the quaters. I know that many of the Wairarapa players and supporters are dissapointed as this clashes with the Phoenix game in Masterton.
