Culture Kicks Wellington Football Festival March 29 2008 Martin Luckie Park, Berhampore

This is Wellington's own mini world cup- Somalia are defending champions after defeating an Aotearoa XI in the 2006 final, Laos and Iraq were the other semifinalists.

Get in quick, 32 places are available and ten teams from 2006 are already pencilled in.

Although it is a world cup multicultural and international teams are welcome in this 6-a-side festival of football. Mixed and womens' teams are also welcome.

For more information go to:

I am also happy to keep you updated about whats going on via this thread- it means i get to surf the site and call it work!

Bring it on!

Fantastic- wahay the Scots!

So that brings the confirmed teams up to 8 including:

  • Cook Islands
  • West Africa
  • Oromo (an ethiopian ethnic group)
  • Burma
  • China
  • Sudan (Very popular at the Upper Hutt Tourney)
  • NZ Police (a force to be reckoned with!)
  •  and now the Scots!

One day of registrations and we only have 24 spots left!

All good for those with heritage other than kiwi!

Being a 4th gen Kiwi my links with the old country are rather lacking, although I would be partial to playing for a Scottish team (Boyd last name=Scottish Striker) so could I get a team together from my church or youth group?

any interest in a Yorkshire team???

I'm looking at you Toffeeman .

O.k. so I'm old, unfit (though i might do something about that) and injury prone - so I could be the last reserve

any interest from the younger and more skilled Tykes out there???

Well, this is welly's second, and Upper Hutt have run two

but actually Hamilton was the first place in aotearoa to run one, Chch has a well established one and auckland ran its first (i think) this year- i may be a tad biased but ours is of a very high standard- partly because of the high level of interest in football in Wgtn and partly becuase our partners are so supportive- Last years finalists won over $1200 worth of prizes including a full team kit.

Actually there has been some discussion around a national tournament for regional winners- stay tuned

Is there age limits?

yes-we will set it at 13 years and above- i.e. no kids
BUT there will be plenty for kids to do, informal football games, face painters, storytellers so it will be a family friendly space, but the football comp is not for kids.

(great game vs Perth 2 nite BTW!)

Brumbys! I was  half joking when I said Southerners were their own ethnicity! Some of your customs are a little strange and you speak a different language but other than that your not to dissimilar!

The NZ Police (major supporters of these tournies up and down the motu) have been told by Annette King to get a national comp rolling for the winners of each regional tournament- ill do some research and find out who are the key teams this year, last year it was Fiji in Christchurch, actually the Fijians are strong all over NZ.

thanks for your entry Brumbys- hopefully yer not to rugby brained on the day-ill put you down as Aotearoa!

yours brings the confirmed entrys (that is teams which have paid the fee) up to three and the tentative entrys up to 13- 19 spots left people!

Ill save a spot for the greeks if they bring some cheese pies to to the feast!

any other teams out there with ethnic connections? Its six a side so you only need a squad of 7-8 to be competitive

Hey lysergic-we want kiwis as well- one of the aims of the tournie is that it is inclusive and integrated- all the better for refugees and new migrants to see what a tolerant place NZ can be-

I already have a few international/kiwi teams in the mix, but after talking to hard news at the Team Wellington game yesterday, i would consider a Yellow Fever team representing Aotearoa coming on board- in fact i welcome it!- Stay tuned mate

Ok, so here is a question for you. Being the loaner who has just moved up here from Christchurch, can I enter on my own? Or is it back to watching episodes of footballers wives?

OK- so its 6 a side but last year the winning somali team had a squad of 12, and they needed it

the poor marakainga (homegrown) boys had a squad of 7 and were walking wounded at the end-
it is an intense day of footie and you cannot do it without 8 players on your books.

Good luck YF
