Olympic simply too strong for Stopout
2008-03-13
The Quarter Finals of the 54th Hilton Petone Cup tournament were completed last night with Wellington Olympic victors 4-1 over Stopout. The game kicked off with Olympic applying high pressure and creating chances early on. The midfield trio of Simon George, Johnny Gerondis and Jimmy Haidakis were the heart of these chances being created. John Gerondis was simply carving the midfield putting lone striker Mickey Malivuk through on goal twice in the first ten minutes, but unfortunaly for Olympic Mickey was unable to captialise.
Olympics early misses proved costly as John Mackay opened the scoring for Stopout with a sweet strike around the twenty minute mark. Minutes later the boys in blue were down to ten men as Jamie OConnor was sent for retaliating after a vigorous challenge. The high pressure being piled on by Olympic increased after the sending off and Simon George leveled the scoring mid way through the first half. Minutes before the break John Gerondis cheekily put Olympic ahead as he was able to lob keeper Sam Baker after Stopout were unable to clear their lines, which resulted in Olympic going into the break 2-1 up.
The second half started basically the same way as the first, with Olympic dominating and creating chances. This time Olympic were the team to score first as Mickey Malivuks hard work up front eventually paid off as he slotted home a third for the greeks.

In watching both semi's I'd have to say Wairarapa look stronger than Wgtn United. Be a great game though. Geez those Fijian boys play a hard uncompromising game and seem to have that bit of extra time on the ball - great to watch.
should be a good game against wairarapa after the chatam cup debacle of last year.
go the diamonds.
Island Bay United won 5-0.
