Just looked at the time of some other posts...tut tut... My boss is a good sponsor and football man, I think he has sponsored Can utd for the last 6 years, I actually showed him one today. But as a tax payer and looking at potential schools it,s always good to see what teachers get up to.

Ouch this is getting messy and rather personal.

Perhaps we could stick to the issues, that being some clubs are happy to pay players and others not. As long as we are clear on that, and not hide behind it, maybe we can all get along?

Maybe.

Yes rules allow for players to be allowed to pay expenses - with the amount of expenses up for debate. If the IRD believe the expenses are in fact income income then liable for tax.

Clubs in Auckland have been paying expenses for the last two or three decades and not just the the top level.

Unsure if locally players are being paid  'sign on' fee or  not but would be surprised if they are - why would any club pay a sign on fee.

In the old Southern League I am aware of player(s) being 'signed on' not for money but in one case a share in a race horse with another a car, another club that offered a push bike missed out for some reason. Both cases going back a while now.

Hassling me personally doesn't make your argument any better or even valid. But if it makes you feel better then I suppose that's ok.

Hope you have a great successful season. :-)

Prickly Thistle who appears to be linked with your club has stated in previous posts somewhere way back that he has no problems with players being paid/rewarded for their time and effort. Yet there are plenty of posts from people saying it doesn't happen. Hearsay much?

Depends on what is being paid.
A pair of bright blue shoes a pair of track pants and polo top is that a payment or just kit that is yours to keep?
If it's classed as payment then the bottom teams pay players as well as the Techs of the league.

Right then, lets all agree to disagree?

Who are the picks for the season in the guys and girls MPL?

Obviously Coastal and Cashmere in the girls but will Varsity step up this year?

In the guys CTech will be hard to beat but Western, Nelson and Bays should give them a run for their money in a much tighter league than last year with Coastal and Halswell a step above Varsity and Nomads with one of those two facing relegation.

Games this weekend -

Bays v Nomads (Bays win)

Western v Coastal (Draw)

CTech v Halswell (Draw)

Nelson v Varsity (Nelson big win)

Sounds like Nelson are going through a bit of a rebuild this season so may be not a title contender this season, Skippy will be missing for a first week at the stat of the season due away for a belated honeynoon, No Gagame or other Solly lads this season. Mark Johnston playing rugga and the usEful Chile lad also back home so some youth players will get their chance, but Nelson alway hard at home so hard to see them finish near the bottom.  .

Would expect Bays Tech and West to be up their, and as you say a matter if halswell, Coastal and Nomads can step up. If Universities can pick uo early points then they could surprise not going to pushing for a top half placing but not neccessary odds on for the wooden spoon.

My picks: Bays, Western, Tech and draw in the Sunday game.

I still have no problems with players being paid. I did not say they were though. I did say it is one way to a better level of football.

Like all sports the more time you can buy the better the product. That is my opinion, not my clubs.

I do PT, just firing back at Broonie :) And Vim text me to let me know there was another flare up on the forum, always good for a laugh, brightens up the day.
What Vim was told I have no reason to doubt and got rather annoyed that it was classified as hearsay and gossip from some of our girls when he spoke directly with the player himself. Whilst you and Broonie may not have been aware of the situation is there no possibility someone else from your club may have instigated this conversation? Happens at our club from time to time.
I actually agree with the concept of reimbursing players for the time and effort they put into the game at the top level but as an administrator am very aware of the pitfalls of that approach when you start committing resources that could be better spent in other areas of club operations, hence our policy of paying coaches, not players. Clubs are always struggling for resources, whether that be gear, facilities or volunteers time but it is hard to balance rewarding players financially (and that includes boots, petrol vouchers, return airfares to Aus etc.) at any level when that comes at the cost of reduced subs, better facilities etc. Look at the impact Bays approach is having on their junior programmes and numbers. A few years back they had the opportunity of employing an excellent guy in Jose Matiz to run their junior development but chose instead to pay Kamo, Highfield et al. Where is the benefit to the club or the game in that? It will be interesting to see if they can recover from last years disappointments under Danny.

For interests sake, what would in fact happen should it be proven that a club is in fact paying players to play? Lets go worst case, followed by the wet bus ticket option.

Thanks

I suppose in reality their amateur status is in jeopardy. their are Fifa rules around this but not sure how you'd find out. The really difficult part would be proving they were being paid to play. Currently Mainland have a rule in place that allows clubs to legitimately reimburse players for training and playing expenses up to $800 (from memory) for the season. So paying players is legit. Makes you wonder why Kamo is getting so much at Bays, no other club would come close to offering that sort of money surely?

A lot of people are not aware of the actual rules. You will not find a "sanctioned" figure for player expenses anywhere, as there isn't one. FIFA rules are actually relatively simple and clear. You will find that if someone normally works on a Saturday afternoon, but plays football instead and thereby forgoes his income, then the equivalent of his ordinary income may be classified as an expense. Some footballers in town must therefore (a) hold down highly paid specialist dayjobs, and (b) normally work on saturdays. That' d be easy to substantiate then!

It was $750 reimbursements that mainland tried to push through but never got the backing of nzf so no rules as such.

NZF cant give backing to anything not in accordance with FIFA rules. Last year's International transfers debacle which cost NZF tens of thousands in fines from FIFA for not following the rules at least made them realise that they might want to be careful with Player Status etc also.

That sum would just about pay for some of the guys at work to turn out on one Saturday instead of working.
Maybe they could work a part day and get paid a retainer.
Time clubs paid a good rate to get the best players, eh lad.
