Mosgiel vs Royals will be interesting since they will play each other again the following week in the Chatham cup (which I'm gonna attend). Also pre-emptive r.i.p to Hearts, based on Northern's current form this will probably be pretty one-sided. TBH Queens Park vs Old Boys is the only game I see being competitive

Gonna visit Al-Huda fc today at Logan Park. They play in Otago Division 2 (5th tier) and from what I understand from their website they are a Muslim social group, so I'm probably not their target audience but still wanna check em out either way.

Just finished having dinner, here are my thought

From start to finish Al-Huda absolutely dominated the Royals (not their 1st team obviously) and pretty much trapped them in their own half. By the end of the first half it was 3-1 to Al-Huda. Second half was more or less just a continuation with the game ending 6-1 to Al-Huda. Hard to say if they'll finish at the top in the current climate but that was a fun game to watch with non-stop pressure.

One thing I thought was funny was that because they both wore sky-blue the bibs had to be taken out, and instead of the Royals wearing the bibs as the away team it was Al-Huda. At the very least it helped differentiate the two.

I had a talk with the founder of the club and something interesting he told me was the there were no player fees which probably makes them the most accessible club in Dunedin. So if you know anyone who can't play cuz of money you might wanna give them a shout.

Overall it was a good game and they were very welcoming, I'd give it a 6.5/10

Some shock results this round. Rolsyn-Wakari were starting to pick up some steam so Green Island putting 3 past them wasn't on my bucket list.

But the real upset it probably Mosgiel demolishing the Royals. Not too long ago they were competing for top spot, but now they've slipped down to 6th. I suppose that now Mosgiel's head coach's suspension is over the team has finally pulled things together, should be interesting to see how they do the rest of the season.

Sorry for the late update I've been bogged down by exam study.

Most striking is that Mosgiel and Queens Park seem to have made a pretty good comeback from the start of the season. Still much of the season to go so maybe Northern isn't completely safe?

Then there's the Royals, I'm not clued in to what's gone wrong for them but certainly not great seeing as they peaked at 2nd(?) early on. Otago Uni however is going to have a downturn in form right around now since we're full swing into exam season and the mid-year break is coming up, so if there's anytime for Mosgiel to steal the No.2 spot it would be now

Come on QP! I used to love watching them as a teenager, when they were in the Southern League back in the 1970s!

Some fun fixtures. Northern vs Varsity will probably decide the winner for the season and give Northern a decent lead of at least 6 points. Also worth pointing out that exams will be over for most people by then, so it's possible some important players will have flown home before the game. Mosgiel are set up well to keep chasing Northern with Old Boys having a rough season. Green Island vs the Royals could also be worth a watch with the two being right next to each other on the ladder.

Unfortunately I will be flying back up to Welly for the mid-year break so I won't be seeing any of these games.

Big round for goals with 20 scored in total. (5.25 per game average)

A good place to start would be Northern scoring a late winner to snatch a 6 point lead. Halfway through the season (I assume) they must be favourites to win the whole thing.

Royals vs Green Island was not the competitive match I assume believed it would be with Royals hammering the islanders away from home, perhaps they will be returning to their usual form?

Mosgiel did well to get a much needed win to remain in the race, being back to back winners they seem to be the only club that can chase Northern for the title. Funnily enough they played each other at the start of the season which was also the first Dunedin game I ever attended. Unfortunate for Hearts however, long drive home I imagine.

Finally, Roslyn vs Old Boys. Again, another long drive home for the Invercargill team, but good for Roslyn who now climb to 4th.

Weather seems to be atrocious all over the country since bad weather is following me everywhere. Northern Hearts vs Roslyn-Wakari was postponed due to bad weather, no updates as to when the match will be played.

Otherwise nothing that crazy result-wise. Varsity gets an important win over the Royals reserves to remain in the title race, now sitting second on the ladder chasing Northern. Green Island also gets a nice win, however it doesn't help them climb the ladder. Northern get a nice 2-0 win over Queens Park to now give them an 8 point lead over everyone else.

Nothing is secure for Northern however as they need at least 17 out of possible 24 points to secure their first ever SPL (5 wins & 2 Draws OR 6 wins), so they still need to go practically unbeaten

From talking to some of their people, not this season. There's a pretty steep financial gap between the SPL and Southern League so they'd need to sort that out first.

That being said some of their guys internally aren't against the idea

Gap not as big as it used to be, a one-off entry fee - which is the same for all teams, this covers all travel costs and any accommodation costs.

Would that mean that the second-placed team get a bite at promotion if they want it?

If Mosgiel drop points again Roslyn-Wakari and Northern defeat the royals than Northern would secure the premiership this weekend. For Northern to somehow bottle this they'd have to lose all their remaining 5 games
16 Feb 02:55 · edited 16 Feb 02:56 · History
Southern League should begin in less than two months which I at least find exciting.

I'm not too up to date with transfer news but I imagine Mosgiel should be favourites to win the comp this year. They were repeat champs in 2023 and 24 and despite starting off with their head coach on suspension were still able to come back and finish 3rd (Behind Varsity on GD). Plus with Northern getting promoted I imagine it'll be a return to form.

Does anyone know if Old Boys get will get relegated? Frankly I have no idea how relegation works nor does anyone in Dunedin apparently (believe me I talk around).

Post from Jan 17th on Old Boys' Facebook suggests they'll be in for this year unless something has changed since then.
