Scorers?
Star players?
Future Nix signings?
Celebrations?
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Two pretty average goals. Chris Tromp free kick form the corner of the box deflects off the bottom of the wall and beats the keeper in the first ten. Stream goal was an Andy Coad tap in after a pretty average cross skids through 2 Coll players. Game of 2 halves as Coll dominated most of the first half and probably should have scored at least twice after some rubbish finishing from yours truly. Second half after Stream scored their goal were unlucky not to score at least twice too. Scramble defence saved us! Nathan Cunliffe, Anthony Meiklejohn, Ethan Morta and the Stream CB? were my standouts for Stream. For Coll Jamie McKay, our keeper, pulled off a few very good saves and Simon Fejos ran till the end but no real stand outs for me.

don't think wellington college have won a traditional game at silverstream for a while.

2006 think was a draw - remember we wern't to happy after the game anyway
2004 - ....

Stream- Col traditionals seem to follow a pattern, to wins then a draw, last two years had been a win to each team and this year was a draw.
Trompy's goal was decent, beat the keeper even under the wall, if I remember it went in far post? Lou correct me if I'm wrong.  Col would put together say 10 good passes but the final 1/3 is what let them down, the boys just didn't seem to get up for it fully. Both teams had phases but draw probably was a fair result despite missed chances from both teams. Surface didn't help but hey that's football.

Lewis is yet to be signed for the Nix...Yeah Pram, seriously though there are a few players who have the potential to go all the way if they stay dedicated etc, but a lot of potential I think

I believe Coll must win tomorrow's game against Onslow at home to make the top section of the schools' league?

Fact?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

i do some quick maths and say.

98% of college players end up in cap 1 or drinking in dunedin
1.8% - end up on the bench for a central league or cap prem team
.2% - go on to anything slightly higher.

I think in this case BBT is talking about Wellington College, rather than the generic College = Secondary School.

yea wellington college... most of the players who ever made secondary schools were because of jaques v. how many players from coll are in it this year when hes not coach? i heard 0. what a surprise.

youve got sam peters, roddy brown who from the last five years are your .2%
and they didn't even play for college in their 7th forms.

Your probably right about Jacques but in the end thats the problem with NZ football, teams are selected due to who is at the trial for a start and also to who is coaching. For example at the recent U19 trials, noone from Grammar was there, one from MAGS and one from Westlake when I know full well that there are players better than the ones selected for the team at those schools.

BBT=S'angus?

Yes WC must get atleast a draw from Onslow to go through to the next round. Loss wouldn't bring Jacques back because Charlie Howe is commited to the college for atleast two years.

Okay, so u've heard it for years, but look at the level of the players coming through the school system now, no disrespect to the 2006 Leavers from Col but next years 7th formers will be amazing. Sure tim mather, zaan, greenie were good but with the continual growth and development of football. Not to mention at WC the Academy currently being run by Guy Smith. It's eventually going to produce top level players. It's only early stages yet but it'll come.

There are too many politics within NZ football, it's not the best team that gets picked sometimes, but the decent players the selectors know and have experience with. Great example is the recent U19 trial Fomble talked about. Why should there be proportionately, more keepers than outfield players? 10 keepers turning up for a trial? what's up with that?

Well think about it, not every player who plays for a first 11 is the best thing since sliced bread, you have some who are the superstar's and some who just do their job and are destined to play Cap 1 or whatever. You can't have more that say 5% of WC players playing at the top level because of the number of players who are competing for spots on teams, and other's being recruited too.

Thought so, which makes sense for most of the comments. Hate to Say it BBT but WC football has got better since you left. So surely be proud that your old school is doing so well for itself, sure the 1st XI has had mishaps but thats football/life, so get over it.

Football in general might have got better but the same cannot be said for the first X1.
winning the hilton petone 2nd divison does not give a team "better statues"

must i remind of of the 2005 1st x1.

-4th at Nationals (Lost to Palmy in the Semis)
- 3rd round chatham cup - bundled out by Petone
- Lost One game in Wellington all year (Sam Bakker will remember this game)
- Lost 3 games all season
- Didn't lose a Traditonal Beat Auckland Grammer at home - The only Traditional they lost

no College team has done better than that since ive left and im a pretty sh*t footballer and probably played about a combined 10 minutes over that whole season. All im saying is you can talk up college football all you want now and how great it is but look back at that 2005 team and see who is still around 90 percent of us are not.

2006 = me expelled from school for turning up to soccer trainings not classes.

and your call about smithy there... he was there in my hayday to fondly remember smithy - cold tranings - showers - don't quite go together

this is not a mine is better than yours its a simple college football is not what you think it is, great while it lasts but most players end up coming out of it worst off not just in wellington college.

No, it hasn't.  Not really.

This crop of players is no better than the last lot.  There are a couple of very talented lads in the 1st XI, and couple of decent younger ones who will come through in the next year or two, but overall not much has changed since I was coaching there 5 years ago (time flies aye Bob!).

The showers at Coll are actually hot most of the time now...which is an upgrade on a few years ago for sure!

Football as a whole has got better not just the 1st XI, ok sure, but football is getting a lot bigger. We'll see what happens with this years team, so hey it's different P.O.V's but ohwell

Biggest sport at the school- 420ish guys playing this year, 60something senior players coaching.
I think with growth comes increase of talent, skill because there is a bigger pool of talent to draw from, look at brazil for example. But that could just be my thinking

Interesting stats.  Maybe WC isn't the powerhouse of Wellington school football after all.  At least 4 of the Petone first team played for HVHS in the last two years.

How could you compare a college in new zealand to brazil?
Permalink Permalink
almost 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I'm not comparing the schools, but the fact that they have a large number of quality players that could be put down to the size of football in Brazil, ie. they have X million people playing so they are going to have X number of amazing players. I'm saying that I think the quality of players is proportional to the number of people playing ie. the talent pool

WC players tend to play for school becuase they know it's a strong 1st XI whereas the HVHS first XI doesn't play in the Premier Youth Grade, I don't know enough about them but thats just an observation

In terms of providing for footballers Wellington College and St Pats Stream stand out a mile.

However I don't think anyone with a brain thinks that it's the best place to develop footballers.  If you want to go on in the game there's no doubt that you're better off coming through a club.

Capital Premier is a vastly superior competition (by a MILE) to Premier Youth and lads of 15 or 16 who are at proper clubs are getting to play in that competition.  Much better for their development.

But if you're going to have schools football then Welly Coll does a better job of it than most.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Smithy your dead right... At stop out now they currently have five 15 year olds who are stand out players for there age.. The club chucked them in the mix with the Capital 2 side and the boys have done fantastic.. They Lack the Physical siide of the game but are improving, they make up for it in skill pace and there ability to beat players at will.. The capital 2 Team might be last on the table but all the results have been very close and no thrashings at all (not like the first team)... The bright side to it is they get better every game, they will be ready to step it up a level next season Capital Premier being a minimum and the capital 2 side wont get relegated this season even though it looks like it now...

I still think every young player should get involved with some college football during there time at school eg National Tournaments, Traditionals but its not the answer to developing players and your much better off trying to get involved with senior football as soon as possible rather than piss around in Youth Premier... your right once again that St pats silverstream and Wellington Coll (being number one)  are the two stand outs for college football in wellington by a country mile...

Who are the five 15 year olds playing for Stop Out? Most top guys I know from Feds, Reps etc are playing College Football.

Justin Gulley, Jono Coulter, Jack Kemp, Mike Haggarty, and one other whose name I can't recall.

All fed players a year, or maybe two, below you Fomble.

Also a couple of lads you played against today are playing for Wests Reserves in Cap Prem: Corey Mills and Franklin (D. Roosevelt) the quick English lad on the right.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
