at the risk of ban stick and years of YF Coventry.. don't you think its a bit rich (literally) that Artificials are the #1 election issue? What a smug middle class city we are becoming...

Im a supporter of more pitches by the way, just think its either bandwagonism or a very narrow minded view of what the regions priorities are. If a 7.1 ever hit Wgtn the last thing we'd be worrying about is whether or not 5 pitches have been laid. Same argumment for RWC2011-although that, at least, has the potential to increase development of such things as pitches by increasing toruism dollars and by leaving legacy infrrastructure.

Coventry City here I come...

Salmon, it is a very tangible issue, with a clear solution, and one which is directly relevant to thousands of Wellingtonians.

yes and yes, it is. but who are all these candidates who are suddenly turf advocates? where did they come from?

and all i am saying is i think it needs to be part of a bigger discussion, an election campaign based on turfs alone is an artificial campaign

Im not big on arguments that have a start/middle/end- i have never been abig believer in reason!
im more about gut reactions and my gut tells me something is fishy when someone comes out and says Artificial turfs are the #1 election issue; surely there must be bigger fish to fry?

In fairness to Bishop he put out a media release on this issue before anyone else.

Like I said, i am all for the knock on effect of this (more turf) and am voting for pro turf peeps, just think it is interesting that the issue has bubbled to the top like so much liquified soil.

Voting forms arrived today.

Not sure who to vote for re district health board and the regional council since they don't have candidate statements about the artificial turf!

News release from Mr Morrison today. He reckons he will get Wakefield turfed. Dunno about this user charge thing though.

$100 total to use the artificial each time? Surely not?
Permalink Permalink

Did anyone seriously think these public/private partnerships  would come at no extra cost? On a brighter note, at least the horrors of Wakefield # 2 will become a distant memory.

If that is how much it costs for two teams to use an artificial, then I have no qualms with user pays. Just that before, it was touted as being gold coin cost each.

Very happy with the plans for two of the most neglected fields in Wellington, Wakefield and Kilbirnie. Am sceptical that they say they will have it ready by next winter though. Don't want Kilbirnie to be the next Karori Park.

ive stuck up a poll, so perhaps discussion on the user charges issue should go in that thread. Cheers

the survey done by CF 3 years ago had a question in it along the lines of 'would you pay more to play on an artificial if it guaranteed you a game', to which the answer was a resounding yes.

surely the users of Wakefield know more about this?

This was Lambton Ward candidate John Bishop's response to the Morrison plan ...

Well done to John Morrison for stitching together a deal for one more artificial sports pitch for Wellington.

But it is only for one more, and while welcome that is not enough. It also comes after years of inactivity from him on the issue including voting against more artificial pitches in the budget round earlier this year.

His action also comes only after considerable political pressure from winter sporting codes for more action from council.

A number of candidates in the election including me have campaigned vigorously on the issue. I have consistently called for more artificial pitches with construction to start this summer.

My current advertising in the Wellingtonian and the Capital Times has been calling on the council to do more.

It is good that Councillor Morrison has felt the heat of the political fire on this issue.

And amazingly money not available when the council was considering its budget only three months ago has now been found under the pressure of an election.

Theres extra funding for drainage and to upgrade Kilbirnie Park as well as $500,000 towards the extra artificial pitch, Mr Bishop said.

While all these moves are welcome, they are clearly being made with the interests of councillors like Mr Morrison not the sportspeople of Wellington in mind.

That was my thought when reading the article - a bit of a reversal from his original decision.  But I may be being a bit harsh.

Currently for Onslow-Western I can only endorse Cr Foster.

(How's that for being a single-issue nutter?)

We are single issue family, as my wife has agreed to take advice on expression of her democratic right. What about the mayoral choice? Wade-Brown reckons she plays (or at least played) futsal. Valuable experience I would have thought.

She is a huge backer of futsal. As a result, Capital City Futsal have publicly backed her campaign.

How is this possible? Mrs ML let's you go off to SA and she goes along with your voting preference.

What are you putting in her food?

Mayoral Choice is tough. Wade-Brown has been making the right noises but she's green party which is a BIG GGF in my book.

Apparently, Council and Tim Brown are making major donations to a turf at Wellington College. Nothing set in concrete but there are plans.

Turf at Wellington College is NATO (no action, talks only). It is simply not credible that a full sized turf can be installed at Wellington College. Apart from the cost, what about carparking space, access, noise and where can the turf be installed? Underground, in the hills or a pie in the sky??
s h just teasing on this.

Plenty of carparking. It will replace one of the current fields, number 2 I think. No additional carparking required. What do you mean noise? It will be pretty much exactly the same as a normal field except it will be all weather. The only stumbling block is the cost I think, which is fairly major.

Here is a link to the report that is to be considered by Council next wednesday 5:30 in a public meeting - http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/meetings/title/Council/2010/29Sep1730/pdf/2010_September_29_Report_2_Sportsfield_Upgrades_report_29_September_2010.pdf
It says the total cost of the wakefield pitch would be 1.625 mill and that Council would fund 1.125 mill with the rest from "sponsorship". THere are no details on that sponsorship so not sure what it involves or whether code for user charges.
ALso, would be good to know more about the feasibility of two pitches at Wakefield as was previously discussed.

Thats an interesting paper and quite different to what was originally mooted in the press last week by Morrison. He was talking 1mill sponsorship with 500k from council, now it seems the other way round.

This vote tomorrow night in the end isn't much different to the one that was held 6-weeks ago after Foster pushed for the money to come forward. Hopefully it has a different outcome!
