East fixtures this week (beginning of the Top 4, Bottom 4 split in the league):

Top 4

Gisborne United vs Gisborne Thistle
Third edition of the Gisborne derby this season. The previous two ending in 8-0 and 3-0 wins for United. United will remain favourites for this one as they look to go unbeaten in the league and all but wrap up the title with a win due to their incredible goal difference. Thistle will be more confident heading into this one than the previous two as they've won 6 on the bounce and looked good. If players like Junior Jimmy are back and fit it'll be close. United to win.
Havelock North Wanderers vs Napier City Rovers Prems
Not much to say really. Havelock will be looking to stay in the fight and push Gisborne all the way. Rovers will be looking to put up a good fight against the distant top 3. I expect Havelock to win but it'll be close, maybe something like 2-1.

Bottom 4

Western Rangers vs Taradale Prems
Both sides showed flashes of but ultimately failed to put together a good run of games. Dale were one of two teams to take points off of Gisborne United, and Rangers are the only Hawkes Bay side who beat Thistle in Gisborne. I'm expecting Dale to win this one but could go either way.
Port Hill United vs Maycenvale United
Another two sides who showed their potential. Vale started strongly but disciplinary issues and a light squad derailed what looked like a promising season. Port Hill sit top of the bottom 4 table and will be looking to take advantage of a light Vale team. In all honesty, all credit to Maycenvale for deciding that enough is enough and trying to move on from the issues that have plagued them for years. Really hope it will work for the better in the long run. I'm going for a draw.

Results in the East:

Gisborne United 3-0 Gisborne Thistle
Watched the livestream of this one. A fairly well contested game by both sides, not too many agricultural challenges which was good to see. The game was obviously physical but there was some decent football played by both sides. A few snapshots from United got them the win in this one. Thistle had a few chances but were never from great angles. Both teams looked solid with United just being the more clinical. Congratulations to United for all but wrapping up the league in this one. They'll be looking to continue unbeaten, keep hold of the challenge trophy, and get themselves ready for what'll be a great game against fellow unbeaten side Whanganui Athletic (who dropped points for the first time all season in a draw against NPBHS).

Havelock North Wanderers 2-0 Napier City Rovers Prems
Managed to get along and watch this one. Wanderers with the lion's share of the chances in the first half. Rovers could of snuck one or two but both keepers kept it scoreless heading into halftime. Breakthrough came from a set piece when Wanderers crossed it in and it found its way into the side netting for 1-0. The home side made it 2-0 with a brilliant chip to seal it. A few more chances here and there but a decent contest all round. Rovers with a very young side but a few very tidy players in that team, will be interesting to see how they get on in the test of the top 4 games.

Western Rangers 0-2 Taradale Prems
Dale push themselves away from last place with a solid win against Rangers. An 8th minute goal settled the nerves before former Rovers and Stags star, Corey Leopard made it 2-0 before halftime. Rangers will be looking to get themselves off the foot of the table but they currently sit 5 points behind fellow Hastings-based strugglers in Maycenvale with two games to go.

Port Hill United 7-0 Maycenvale United
Not quite the draw I predicted. Port Hill overrun a depleted Vale side 7-0 at Marewa Park, with the game a forgone conclusion by halftime as the teams headed into the sheds at 4-0. Port Hill have been trying that they are a competitive team in this division and a result like that goes a long way to supporting that. Vale will be disappointed and will be hoping to get a points from their last two games to stave off any late push from Rangers.

Results out West

FC Western Reserves 2 - 1 Marist Reserves - surprisingly close result considering Marist's bench contained their coach and their club president. 1st team quality goalkeeper dropping in for first time this season probably helped.

PNU Reserves 0 - 3 Takaro - Takaro comfortable win over a depleted PNU Reserves. Assistant coach and CF's competition manager part of a 3 man bench for PNU.

Moturoa 1 - 10 Levin - Oh what could have been for Levin this year. Thrown away points earlier in the season cost them any chance of keeping up with Athletic, on their day they have been outstanding. Moturoa have failed to win a point since they handed Marist a draw back in May, they have been awful for 8 games now. Aggregate score against Levin this season is 19-2.

Rangers 4 - 1 Feilding - very close game with Rangers scoring two late whilst Feilding pushed forward. Feilding's bench was two who haven't played all season and their coach. Seemed to be a few missing from their XI as well.

Whanganui Athletic 2 - 2 NPBHS - Boys High have had a fair bit of joy against Athletic the past couple of seasons, back and forth game here, Athletic probably with one eye on their trophy ceremony post game.

Three games to go now, Athletic vs Gisborne United looks set in stone and will be a great contest. Not sure I'd want Athletic's backline against Jimmy! Then the winner of that probably has Greytown. The rumour going around here is that it will be the playoff winner plus Olympic Reserves, Miramar Reserves and Phoenix 3rds into CL2. I have a horrible feeling we are going to end up stuck with Athletic again next year.

It really doesn't make any sense in terms of development to have these 2-3 CL2 ready teams in Gisborne United, Whanagnui and also Havelock stuck in the Prems leagues just so reserve sides can go up for the fun of it. Nix going up makes sense as they'd like to have at least one side in the Central Leagues, but Miramar? They're currently 5th in Cap Prem on 15 points. They haven't even got half of Greytowns points, and they're 20 points behind the leaders in Olympic.

Just seems like the rich clubs are getting richer.

The thing that makes me think there may be something in it is that the playoff between the Cap Prem winners and the West/East winners is still on the schedule. There is no point in that game if it doesn't determine promotion.

There is a consultation meeting next week where Capital and Central Football are proposing different options. I guess we will all know more after that meeting.

One thing I’m fairly certain of is that promotion will need to be earned and not given to NL reserves sides that haven’t earned it.

East Prem fixtures

Rovers Prems vs Gisborne United
United are practically champions. If they get a point this weekend it's official. I'm guessing they'll travel especially well for the trophy left and celebrations. United to win this easily.

Havelock North vs Gisborne Thistle
It finished 3-1 to Thistle the last time these teams played each other, the time before that was 6-2 to Havelock. Thistle are a better team than now compared to that first round but Havelock have quietly bounced back after their back to back losses in Gisborne. Will all depend on how well Thistle travel, going to predict a draw in this one.

Port Hill vs Western Rangers
Not much motivation in this one. Rangers will be looking to win both their final games to get off the foot of the table while Port Hill will be looking to continue last weeks form. I think Port will win this.

Maycenvale United vs Dale Prems
Not much to say really. Both teams will be looking to end the season well, Vale will mainly be looking to not get spanked for the upteenth game in a row. Dale to win this.

Marist Reserves vs Levin, Arena Turf, 7pm FRIDAY.
Whanganui Athletic vs FC Western Reserves, Wembley Park, 245pm
New Plymouth Rangers vs Takaro, Merrilands Domain, 245pm
Feilding vs NPBHS, Timona Park, 245pm

PNU Ressies vs Moturoa has been moved to the 15th August - which is also Round 1 of the Prem Cup. Be interesting to see how many teams enter, with the prospect of more travel and unable to select anyone who has played Cup rounds in lower grades might be a struggle for some to raise a team.

I think some of the teams will still feel like they will have a bit to play for. It sounds as though there will still be a Hawkes Bay Prems cup, so I imagine some of the teams like Port Hill, Taradale and NCR will be building towards that and figuring out how to beat Havelock North.

Taradale will also have the incentive of trying to build towards the federation cup final against Gisborne.

Maycenvale will likely have at least their captain back after he served his yellow card suspension last week. They fielded about 5 of their reserves team in the game against Port Hill.

Port Hill v Western Rangers will still be a big game. A tight draw, then a more comfortable 2-0 win for Port for the first two meetings this year. The Mason memorial trophy is up for only the second time. So I think both teams will go hard to win that as it will have a fair bit of meaning for both teams.

Havelock v Thistle sounds pretty tasty. Will depend what team Thistle travel with.
