East fixtures this week (beginning of the Top 4, Bottom 4 split in the league):

Top 4

Gisborne United vs Gisborne Thistle
Third edition of the Gisborne derby this season. The previous two ending in 8-0 and 3-0 wins for United. United will remain favourites for this one as they look to go unbeaten in the league and all but wrap up the title with a win due to their incredible goal difference. Thistle will be more confident heading into this one than the previous two as they've won 6 on the bounce and looked good. If players like Junior Jimmy are back and fit it'll be close. United to win.
Havelock North Wanderers vs Napier City Rovers Prems
Not much to say really. Havelock will be looking to stay in the fight and push Gisborne all the way. Rovers will be looking to put up a good fight against the distant top 3. I expect Havelock to win but it'll be close, maybe something like 2-1.

Bottom 4

Western Rangers vs Taradale Prems
Both sides showed flashes of but ultimately failed to put together a good run of games. Dale were one of two teams to take points off of Gisborne United, and Rangers are the only Hawkes Bay side who beat Thistle in Gisborne. I'm expecting Dale to win this one but could go either way.
Port Hill United vs Maycenvale United
Another two sides who showed their potential. Vale started strongly but disciplinary issues and a light squad derailed what looked like a promising season. Port Hill sit top of the bottom 4 table and will be looking to take advantage of a light Vale team. In all honesty, all credit to Maycenvale for deciding that enough is enough and trying to move on from the issues that have plagued them for years. Really hope it will work for the better in the long run. I'm going for a draw.

Results in the East:

Gisborne United 3-0 Gisborne Thistle
Watched the livestream of this one. A fairly well contested game by both sides, not too many agricultural challenges which was good to see. The game was obviously physical but there was some decent football played by both sides. A few snapshots from United got them the win in this one. Thistle had a few chances but were never from great angles. Both teams looked solid with United just being the more clinical. Congratulations to United for all but wrapping up the league in this one. They'll be looking to continue unbeaten, keep hold of the challenge trophy, and get themselves ready for what'll be a great game against fellow unbeaten side Whanganui Athletic (who dropped points for the first time all season in a draw against NPBHS).

Havelock North Wanderers 2-0 Napier City Rovers Prems
Managed to get along and watch this one. Wanderers with the lion's share of the chances in the first half. Rovers could of snuck one or two but both keepers kept it scoreless heading into halftime. Breakthrough came from a set piece when Wanderers crossed it in and it found its way into the side netting for 1-0. The home side made it 2-0 with a brilliant chip to seal it. A few more chances here and there but a decent contest all round. Rovers with a very young side but a few very tidy players in that team, will be interesting to see how they get on in the test of the top 4 games.

Western Rangers 0-2 Taradale Prems
Dale push themselves away from last place with a solid win against Rangers. An 8th minute goal settled the nerves before former Rovers and Stags star, Corey Leopard made it 2-0 before halftime. Rangers will be looking to get themselves off the foot of the table but they currently sit 5 points behind fellow Hastings-based strugglers in Maycenvale with two games to go.

Port Hill United 7-0 Maycenvale United
Not quite the draw I predicted. Port Hill overrun a depleted Vale side 7-0 at Marewa Park, with the game a forgone conclusion by halftime as the teams headed into the sheds at 4-0. Port Hill have been trying that they are a competitive team in this division and a result like that goes a long way to supporting that. Vale will be disappointed and will be hoping to get a points from their last two games to stave off any late push from Rangers.

Results out West

FC Western Reserves 2 - 1 Marist Reserves - surprisingly close result considering Marist's bench contained their coach and their club president. 1st team quality goalkeeper dropping in for first time this season probably helped.

PNU Reserves 0 - 3 Takaro - Takaro comfortable win over a depleted PNU Reserves. Assistant coach and CF's competition manager part of a 3 man bench for PNU.

Moturoa 1 - 10 Levin - Oh what could have been for Levin this year. Thrown away points earlier in the season cost them any chance of keeping up with Athletic, on their day they have been outstanding. Moturoa have failed to win a point since they handed Marist a draw back in May, they have been awful for 8 games now. Aggregate score against Levin this season is 19-2.

Rangers 4 - 1 Feilding - very close game with Rangers scoring two late whilst Feilding pushed forward. Feilding's bench was two who haven't played all season and their coach. Seemed to be a few missing from their XI as well.

Whanganui Athletic 2 - 2 NPBHS - Boys High have had a fair bit of joy against Athletic the past couple of seasons, back and forth game here, Athletic probably with one eye on their trophy ceremony post game.

Three games to go now, Athletic vs Gisborne United looks set in stone and will be a great contest. Not sure I'd want Athletic's backline against Jimmy! Then the winner of that probably has Greytown. The rumour going around here is that it will be the playoff winner plus Olympic Reserves, Miramar Reserves and Phoenix 3rds into CL2. I have a horrible feeling we are going to end up stuck with Athletic again next year.

It really doesn't make any sense in terms of development to have these 2-3 CL2 ready teams in Gisborne United, Whanagnui and also Havelock stuck in the Prems leagues just so reserve sides can go up for the fun of it. Nix going up makes sense as they'd like to have at least one side in the Central Leagues, but Miramar? They're currently 5th in Cap Prem on 15 points. They haven't even got half of Greytowns points, and they're 20 points behind the leaders in Olympic.

Just seems like the rich clubs are getting richer.

The thing that makes me think there may be something in it is that the playoff between the Cap Prem winners and the West/East winners is still on the schedule. There is no point in that game if it doesn't determine promotion.

There is a consultation meeting next week where Capital and Central Football are proposing different options. I guess we will all know more after that meeting.

One thing I’m fairly certain of is that promotion will need to be earned and not given to NL reserves sides that haven’t earned it.

East Prem fixtures

Rovers Prems vs Gisborne United
United are practically champions. If they get a point this weekend it's official. I'm guessing they'll travel especially well for the trophy left and celebrations. United to win this easily.

Havelock North vs Gisborne Thistle
It finished 3-1 to Thistle the last time these teams played each other, the time before that was 6-2 to Havelock. Thistle are a better team than now compared to that first round but Havelock have quietly bounced back after their back to back losses in Gisborne. Will all depend on how well Thistle travel, going to predict a draw in this one.

Port Hill vs Western Rangers
Not much motivation in this one. Rangers will be looking to win both their final games to get off the foot of the table while Port Hill will be looking to continue last weeks form. I think Port will win this.

Maycenvale United vs Dale Prems
Not much to say really. Both teams will be looking to end the season well, Vale will mainly be looking to not get spanked for the upteenth game in a row. Dale to win this.

Whanganui Athletic vs FC Western Reserves, Wembley Park, 245pm
New Plymouth Rangers vs Takaro, Merrilands Domain, 245pm
Feilding vs NPBHS, Timona Park, 245pm

PNU Ressies vs Moturoa has been moved to the 15th August - which is also Round 1 of the Prem Cup. Be interesting to see how many teams enter, with the prospect of more travel and unable to select anyone who has played Cup rounds in lower grades might be a struggle for some to raise a team.

I think some of the teams will still feel like they will have a bit to play for. It sounds as though there will still be a Hawkes Bay Prems cup, so I imagine some of the teams like Port Hill, Taradale and NCR will be building towards that and figuring out how to beat Havelock North.

Taradale will also have the incentive of trying to build towards the federation cup final against Gisborne.

Maycenvale will likely have at least their captain back after he served his yellow card suspension last week. They fielded about 5 of their reserves team in the game against Port Hill.

Port Hill v Western Rangers will still be a big game. A tight draw, then a more comfortable 2-0 win for Port for the first two meetings this year. The Mason memorial trophy is up for only the second time. So I think both teams will go hard to win that as it will have a fair bit of meaning for both teams.

Havelock v Thistle sounds pretty tasty. Will depend what team Thistle travel with.

Results out West

Marist 1 - 4 Levin - Levin with Olly James and Jaedyn Dawson joint top scorers in the league along with Riley Daken of Boys High. Marist confirmed bottom, only dropped a couple of CL2 players.

Whanganui Athletic 1 - 0 FC Western - Looks like a feisty one with 5 yellows. Athletic had their coach and assistant as subs at home again, clearly not a lot of depth.

NP Rangers 1 - 1 Takaro - not a lot going on here, two confirmed mid table sides.

Feilding 0 - 7 NPBHS - Feilding keeper sent off and their coach ended up in goal. Riley Daken with a hat-trick he is some player.

Results in the East:

Napier City Rovers Prems 2-5 Gisborne United
United wrap up the title and do it in style away at Bluewater Stadium with a strong win over Rovers Prems. Credit to them as they've looked like the best team without a doubt this second half of the season. The team will now be looking to retain the challenge trophy at home next week and secure an unbeaten league season. They'll also have one eye on the Fed cup final at home as well as the potential of CL2 playoffs.

Havelock North Wanderers 3-0 Gisborne Thistle
Wanderers secure 2nd place with a tough fought win over Thistle. Thistle without Junior Jimmy, Nick Land, and Leo Starck (who scored against Havelock in the 3-1 win at Childers) and were only 1-0 down at half due to a perfectly executed chip from JC Mack (livestream is on YouTube). Back and forth game where Thistle probably had the better share of the possession but failed to create. Only 2 shots on target I believe for Thistle in the second half but they did well with a light squad regardless.

Port Hill United 1-1 Western Rangers
After taking the lead, Rangers give up the 1-0 advantage and finish 1-1 against Port Hill. This confirms that Western Rangers will finish last, now sitting 4 points behind Vale with the two teams facing each other next week.

Maycenvale United 1-10 Taradale Prems
It was 1-1 after 17 minutes, but 9 unanswered goals secure the win for Dale. A few CL2 players dropping down with the league bye for them this week. Shoutout to Percy-Fysh and Fysh with hattricks. Attention will turn to preparing the Fed Cup as well as the rumors of a Hawkes Bay Prem Cup.

Results Out West

NPBHS 4 - 3 PNU Reserves. A depleted PNU came so close to upsetting Boys High, a 90th minute winner taking the points.
Levin 4 - 0 NP Rangers. Expected, Rangers have been awful outside the Naki this season. Levin seal 2nd place.
Moturoa 4 - 1 Marist. Moturoa pick up their first points since May against an awful Marist side.
FC Western 1 - 1 Feilding. Feilding give themselves a shot at being the top placed Manawatu team with a win next week.
Takaro 1 - 5 Whanganui Athletic. Also expected. I still think Athletic struggle against Gisborne United, and they definitely won't match up to Greytown. Their first XI is a class above as seen by their undefeated season but they have very little depth.

Results in the East:

Gisborne Thistle 0-2 Rovers Prems. A lacklustre end to Thistle's season, also Tam Cramer's last game in charge.
Gisborne United 5-2 Havelock North. Wanderers had their goalkeeper playing striker and only brought two subs, lots away or unavailable by the sounds of it. United were without Spawforth and Higham.
Taradale Prems 4-2 Port Hill United. Dale continue preparation for their Fed Cup final against Gis United with a win against Port.
Maycenvale United 1-1 Western Rangers. Vale's first point since the beginning of June (which was a 2-0 win against Rangers). Dissapointing end to the season for Rangers.

We now have the East Prems Cup. No Dale or United as they prepare for Fed Cup.

Western Prems Cup Draw is done
Only six teams entered.

Marist Ressies vs Feilding
Takaro vs Levin
FC Western and PNU have the bye.

CF changed the rules so now players are cup tied to lower grade comps. So anyone who played in their clubs champ team earlier in season is cup tied and can't Prem Cup. I cannot see how Western will be able to raise a team, all their usual players are now either graded to Central League and are ineligible, or played in the Champs cup and are ineligible.

Is there any clarity of what’s happening next season? Seems ridiculous to be at this point of the season. Where you have two clear league winners in the east and west, likely having to play playoff. Is there a cap Prem v East/West playoff?
But as far as I’m aware there is no confirmation of what league they’d be playing in?

Surely whatever happens there is no playoffs needed? Either promote both winners to bring CL2 up to 10 teams or CL2 ends which would mean no promotion.

Still no great to be this close to the season's end with no clue of what will be happening next year.

FC Western 1 - 2 NPBHS
Feilding 1 - 1 Takaro
NP Rangers 3 - 0 Moturoa
Whanganui Athletic 1 - 2 Levin. About time. Whilst Athletics season has been impressive, they have looked beatable, more so than last year, and once a couple of their imports departed their depth is non-existant. I cannot see them surviving Jimmy Somerton and Gisborne United, and if they make it through that Greytown will be too strong for them. Levin will be wondering what could have been if not for shitting the bed a bit earlier in the year.

Still one game to go next week PNU Ressies vs Moturoa, before the playoff between Athletic and Gisborne United starts on the 22/08

I can’t wait for us to actually win the playoff and shut you up you’re so negative about our club every time you talk on here. Everyone might have written us off but I know those lads and they’ll come out swinging.

They’re just an honest bunch of lads who work there nuts off all week and play hard every weekend. Theres 7 U19 boys playing first team football and they’re learning from great senior footballers like Holden Noony Chops and Simmy. But you give us a hard time because we sign a couple internationals when there’s really no difference than signing a couple boys from out of town except their passport colour. Whatever happens we’re proud of our team and our club.

Oh and btw they didn’t even train last week because the vomiting bug went right through the squad. But you won’t hear azza making excuses for them. They were all knackered.

He does have a point Bootlegger. I think it's good when clubs have the ability to bring in a few imports as it improves the quality of the league, but when they leave half-way through the season and leave the rest of the squad exposed it's not a great look.

Putting that aside, Whanganui are very unlucky that they had an off year in the final season of Fed League as they've shown on and off the pitch these last two seasons that they should really be CL2. If not for that red card in the first leg last season, Athletic probably would've been playing CL2 football and most likely challenging for CL.

Also, looking at Gisborne and Greytown, it is hardly a sure thing, but all three of these sides have plenty of quality. It'll be close between Gisborne and Athletic, but it doesn't matter who wins that as Greytown have been signing Central League and National League regulars, while also flying players up for games from the South Island.

It'll be good for Central Football to have Athletic in CL2 eventually, but they do seem up against it this season, at least in the second half of the league.

How about a friendly wager @Bootlegger? If they win the playoff I bow down and proclaim them the best side the western prems/fed league has ever seen and ride off into the sunset never to post here again.

When they don't you go play for City next season.

Do they have the young lads live in the gym and work at the meatworks or do they just reserve that for the foreign lads?

Haven’t seen them mention anything on social media. I also have seen a post or something saying ‘let’s finish the season off with a cup win’ (speaking about the fed cup final this weekend).

It would be ridiculous if they didn’t push for promotion, but it certainly could happen

All the messaging around the club this season has been around pushing for CL2. I'd be shocked if they weren't in the playoff.

They've probably just said that on their post because as of now it would be their final game of the season, with Central Football yet to confirm anything regarding the playoff.

there must be a second leg surely, they'd have it at Memorial Park in palmy if it was a one-off

I'm a bit out of the loop but why is there going to be a playoff?

Won't Central League 2 be sending 4-5 teams up to CL anyway? In which case all the champs plus one more (presumably 2nd in capital) move into CL2? Or are they making CL2 smaller?

Surely the winner of the Central Federation is a title you would want irrelevant of a the playoff and league placement for the next season? East v West to find a champion.

Had this confirmed yesterday, it will be a two-legged series. Both sides were on a call with a random draw done, to determine which team could choose whether to play home or away first. Athletic were pulled from the hat, and coach Aaron Folan chose to play at HOME for the first leg. Same thing happened last year, Athletic chose to play home first leg...and they ended up losing the play-off.

Will lightning strike twice?
