Games in the East this weekend:

Western Rangers vs Gisborne United
Rangers have been trending well in recent weeks, a big result away against Thistle will be a huge boost for the side. United sitting top and with their quality and numbers, they have been travelling well this year. United to win this one surely.

Gisborne Thistle vs Port Hill United
Both teams coming off losses last round. Thistle will be hoping for some players to come back from injury as they try to keep up with the top 2. Port Hill sitting bottom as of now but only 4 points separate the bottom 6 teams. Thistle to get the win.

Havelock North Wanderers vs Maycenvale United
Wanderers will be looking to carry over their momentum from the Chatham Cup game and keep the pressure on Gisborne United. Vale started the season well but the two Gizzy trips were a bit of a hiccup for the side. Dakota Lucas coming back from suspension as well. Wanderers to win this one.

Napier City Rovers Res. vs Taradale AFC Res.
Battle of the reserve sides. Dale coming off the back of taking a point of Gisborne United, and a win over Takaro in the Fed Cup. Rovers Prems have shown flashes of quality football this year but yet to put together a good 90 minutes. May depend on what players drop from from Rovers CL squad. Going for a draw in this one.

I agree with all your picks, though St Leonards can be a tough ground to travel too. Rangers are high on confidence and every game they have played has been tight. I’m picking GU as well, but a close win with some cards I would think.

I think predicting cards is the safest bet in this one. Rangers have been very competitive recently, although in their one game against the other challenger in Havelock was the only blowout scoreline this year against them (6-1). St Leonards is a good equaliser though.

I remember HotChips doing some club profiles and I recently came across one of the more interesting ones.

Maycenvale United

Formed in 1975, beginning as a junior focused organization, representing the suburbs and schools of Mayfair, Central and Parkvale. Senior football followed a few years later as the club expanded, while playing out of their home base of Akina Park. The club has focused on being family-orientated that prioritised community involvement.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Vale established themselves within HB football. They built a strong base of local Hastings players, the club slowly built up it's competitive senior teams and maintained one of the stronger footballing cultures in Hastings.

The club's golden era arrived during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Between 2007 and 2010, Maycenvale became one of the strongest sides in the Central region, winning multiple regional titles and developing a strong senior squad built around local talent like Tom Biss and Leon Birnie, with a mix of fresh imports in Bill Robertson, Chris Greatholder, Kyle Baxter, and plenty more. After several failed promotion attempts in earlier years, Vale finally earned their Central League status by defeating Upper Hutt City of Cap Prem, and then Team Taranaki in the relegation playoff, both over 2 legs.

They competed in the Central League during 2011 and 2012, representing the peak of the club's footballing history. Although the side eventually struggled with the financial and depth demands required to stay in Central League long-term, it was still a remarkable achievement for a community-based Hastings club. Their 9th placed finishing in 2011 was followed up with a last place finish in 2012 and the club dropped down to Prems football.

The club have consistently remained in the Hawkes Bay Prems leagues ever since, remaining competitive with a consistent core of players. Previous seasons have resulted in 5th, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 2nd, and 4th place finishes, with the club currently sat 4th in the East Prem table. They play out of the Hastings Sports Park and feature 4 senior teams and plenty of youth teams.

The biggest missed opportunity for Maycenvale, (in my opinion) was that they never managed to establish a clubrooms.
I could be wrong, but I think they were given an opportunity to build a clubrooms at the sport park when they moved from Akina Park. But funding or disagreements meant it never happened.

They did create a pseudo clubrooms/bar in a shed at the sports park. However I don’t think they went through the correct process to get a license and they had to shut it down. I’m unsure if it’s open now or not?

Definitely would have been a contirbuting factor with their decline. It's hard to grow a player and fan base if you don't have a place for everyone to meet after games or just for club events.

I heard rumors that it got shut down after they were selling alcohol unlicensed and that it's more of a shed than anything else. Big missed opportunity if that bit about disagreements is true.

Has anyone actually been in them?

I’ve been in there. They did a decent job with what they had. Made a small bar out of plywood etc. I’m assuming some builders associated to the club did a Perky. Then rows of tables chairs etc.

It’s in a large shed with no windows, which is the unappealing part. But the atmosphere was good.

They provided pizzas for aftermatch and did a raffle.

Certainly not appropriate long term, but a good solution for a short term fix.

I am not involved in any club committees, but I imagine clubs generate a significant amount of funding through their bars as well?

Results in the East:

Gisborne Thistle 3-0 Port Hill United
Western Rangers 2-9 Gisborne United (Jimmy Sommerton is on track to score 40+ goals this season)
Havelock North Wanderers 5-0 Maycenvale United
Napier City Rovers 3-2 Taradale

Thistle left it late with a flurry of goals in the second half, looked like a good back and fourth game form the bits of the stream that I watched.
United predictably too good for Rangers, Jimmy Sommerton scored 6 in this one which alone would put him fourth on the top goalscorers list behind Maisey, Parker, Keith, and himself.
Havelock too good for Maycenvale, competitive for parts, but this one could've been more by the sounds of it.
Not much star quality in the Rovers prem side but they got the job against a Dale side which has been very competitive over the last 1 and a half seasons. Seems like it'll all go down to that Gisborne vs Havelock game in the next round. I've heard rumors that the league will split into top 4 and bottom 4?

Marist Reserves 2 Takaro 1
PNU Reserves 2 Levin 3

Yep I’ve heard the east will have a top 4 bottom 4 split.

Another rumour I’ve heard (yet to be confirmed).

Port Hill will again host a football day at McLean Park on Kings Birthday Weekend Sunday. The final game of the day is pencilled to be Port Hill v Gisborne United fed cup QF.

The rumour is, that CF will not reschedule the Prems game for the Saturday. Which coincidentally is Port Hill at home to Gisborne United. My understanding is that they will play back to back, Saturday - Sunday. Gisborne will stay the night in Napier.

I appreciate that it’s difficult to change things during the season, but it seems very odd that CF haven’t come to the party with some sort of scheduling change.

I went to the McLean Park day last year, was a great day! I would have thought CF would want to support the event.

This weeks games out West:

FC Western Reserves vs Whanganui Athletic, 1230pm, Lynmouth Park Athletic win
Takaro vs NP Rangers, 1230pm, Skoglund Park Draw
NPBHS vs Feilding United, 1230pm, Gully Turf Feilding win
Levin vs Marist Reserves, 245pm, Donnelly Park Levin win
Moturoa vs PNU Reserves, 245pm, Onuku Taipari Domain Draw

Finding it quite hard to pick games not involving Athletic, very competitive league outside of them.
Bit of footy math picking Feilding over Boys High, with them bopping Rangers who then beat Boys High.

Games in the east this week

The massive Thistle v Gis United Derby
Harry Barker

Gisborne United hosting on their super thin pitch, I think Thistle will put up a better fight than the season opener, they have played well the last few weeks. Big chance of cards and controversy with these sides and the ref. But I’m picking United to win a tight one.
2-1

Taradale v Havelock North
Taradale Park #2
Kicking off at the same time as the CL2 game on the pitch next door. I think this will be a simple win for Havelock North. Taradale played well last week, but were eventually opened up by a young NCR team. Havelocks ball movement and depth on the bench should make this simple.
5-0

Maycenvale v Port Hill
Hastings Sports Park

I get the feel long Port Hill are due a big result. Played well away to Thistle last week, conceded a goal in the 75th minute and then two more to lose 3-0. Maycenvale struggling for numbers the last few weeks, only two on the bench the previous game. I’m picking Port to Win a high scorer
6-3

Western Rangers v NCR Res
St Leonards

Rangers have been brilliant some weeks and then absolutely awful the following week. With Rovers first team at home on Sunday, I’m picking a strong side will show up in Hastings. NCR to win
4-1

Gisborne Thistle 2-1 NCR Reserves

Taradale 6-1 Maycenvale - another red card for Maycenvale, bit of a theme unfortunately.

Gisborne United 7-0 Port Hill - Ankther solid win for GU, did appear to be essentially against the Port Hill reserve team. So probably not a bad result for Port. Will be interesting to see how the Fed cup game at McLean park goes tomorrow.

Last few results from last week in East:

Havelock scrape past Western Rangers with a 2-1 scoreline. Apparently quite the rotated team from Havelock North and it could have been more. Definitely feeling the affects of pushing Western Suburbs for the full 90 only 2 days before.

Games in the East this weekend:

Napier City Rovers vs Gisborne United
United showing just how well they are travelling this year last weekend with back-to-back games and back-to-back convincing wins. The amount of CL players dropping down this week may be the decider of whether this is 10-0 to GU or 4-0 to GU. United to win this.

Gisborne Thistle vs Havelock North Wanderers
Both teams coming of scrappy 2-1 wins last weekend. HN clearly the stronger but if Thistle get a solid squad together and avoid injuries they can give teams a good go. Still expecting Havelock to get the win here but may be another close one.

Taradale Prems vs Port Hill United
Both teams on 8 points and right beside eachother on the table, very contrasting scores last week though. Dale breeze past an ill-disciplined Vale 6-1, whereas Port lost 6-0 and 5-2 to Gisborne United. Dale CL2 are away so may be a little light with support numbers but i still think Dale will get the win.

Western Rangers vs Maycenvale United
Rangers with a promising, close loss to Wanderers last week, Vale continuing their slide down the table. I'm expecting the busiest person on the pitch to be the ref though the way Vale are playing. Going for a draw but would lean towards Rangers getting a result here potentially.

Results out West

PNU Reserves 3 - 2 New Plymouth Rangers
NPBHS 6 - 0 Marist Reserves
Takaro 4 - 4 FC Western Reserves
Moturoa 1 - 4 Whanganui Athletic
Levin 0 - 1 Feilding

10 minutes of craziness at the end in Takaro vs Western. 2-1 to Western became 3-2 to Takaro. Then Western equalise and then take the lead through an injury time own goal only to score an own goal of their own to drop 2 points.

Athletic down to 9 men at one stage thanks to a bit of dissent. Still manage to pretty much secure the league.

Feilding with a big win on the road in Levin. Be a big boost for them, have had a lot of close results go against them. More impressive is the clean sheet, Levin have been banging them in this season.

Results in the East last weekend:

Rovers Prems 1-3 Gisborne United
Gisborne Thistle 3-1 Havelock North Wanderers
Taradale Prems 3-4 Port Hill United
Western Rangers 0-2 Maycenvale United

Some big results in there, one that stands out is Thistle getting up over Havelock, by the sounds of it a few quick goals and then some good defending from Thistle got them the win here.

United predictably beat Rovers Prems, Dale and Port in yet another high scorer for the teams (not too many defensively resolute sides in the league outside of United and Wanderers who have conceded 11 and 15 respectively, next best is Rovers with 25, then Thistle with 26. Rangers conceding 37 so far in 10 games, close to 4 goals conceded a game).

The other upset for me is Rangers losing to Vale. Thought Rangers would've built on their close loss to Wanderers the week before but obviously just didn't turn up. The biggest upset for me is that there was only 3 cards in this game and no red for Vale.

Saw on the latest Napier Marist post someone commented how disappointing it was to have no Prems or Div 1 team. Club responded saying they're working hard to achieve this.

Guessing a lot of this will depend on who comes in as Director of Football. After talking to some former players it just seems like the appetite isn't there from a lot of the senior players. Their Div 2 side should really be in Div 1 anyway but unless something major happens, stepping back up to Prems early may be too big of a step. Trying to think of any other teams that were fairly solid in fed league a few years ago and dropped off like this.

Predictions out East:

Maycenvale United vs Gisborne Thistle
Maycenvale arresting their slump in form and drop down the table with a win over their cross town rivals at Western Rangers, and without anybody getting suspended as well! Thistle coming off their result of the season with a strong win over Havelock at Childers. As long as Thistle travel with decent numbers this is theres for the taking. Thistle win.

Gisborne United vs Havelock North Wanderers
Game of the season? Basically a cup final for both sides, a win for United would put them 6 points ahead of the Wanderers with only a few games left and then the top 4, bottom 4 split. A win for Wanderers would put them back on level points with United (albeit still 2nd due to United's insane goal difference). Could easily go either way but I think United's home advantage could be the tipping point. Gisborne United win.

Port Hill United vs Napier City Rovers Prems
Identical records except for the fact Rovers have conceded 25 goals this season where Port have conceded 34. In the first round this game ended 2-1 to Port Hill on Bluewater. Rovers playing away in the cup to Palmy Marist this week so could maybe see a few players switching teams, who knows. Rovers to win this one.

Western Rangers vs Taradale FC Prems
Western Rangers in 8th, Dale in 7th. Both teams have shown flashes this season but failed to string together consistent results. Leaning towards Dale winning this one.

I really hope Havelock can beat GU this week, that would open the league up massively.

I think Port v NCR will either be a draw or a Port Win. I think NCR CL team will take a full strength side to palmy as Chatham cup will be high on their priority list. Port are playing well at the moment, wins over Taradale and Maycenvale in the last 3 weeks (with a close cup loss to Gisborne United). Either way the winner will likely complete the top 4

Otherwise agree with your picks

Just watched the live stream of the Gisborne United game and don't think I've ever seen such an ill disciplined team in my life. Terrible challenges, telling people to get up after obvious fouls, benches comments towards ref and other team were terrible, kicking the ball away and at players well after whistle was blew, and yelling at the ref at every possible chance they could get. It would be nice to see some Gisborne representation if possible in CL2 next year but christ the team needs a wake up call about their behavior.

Don't think I've ever seen a team that puts in challenges like that complain about the most softest touches on their players.

Takaro with a great point away to Boys High, coming back from 2 goals down in the last ten minutes to secure a draw. Combined with FC Western beating Levin in injury time, that has to hand the title to Athletic now. Credit to Athletic, 11 games in and still haven't looked like dropping a point.

Comfortable win for Rangers on the road at Marist, who are woeful. Feilding make it two wins from two with two clean sheets to start round two,
