Thats a great look, interesting to see where all the teams are. Would be interesting to see how the junior team numbers correlate to this.

Park Island has always been a strange home for Marist football. I remember rumors of them playing that first Fed league season at Bluewater Stadium but that never happened. There were plans about a decade ago for that big Park Island revamp which never happened, it included plans to upgrade the Marist clubrooms and put two footy pitches behind the rugby pitches in Tremain field (now impossible with the Magpies facility). The football will always be second fiddle there unfortunately.

On the Napier junior side. Napier City Rovers are the most visible. Probably followed by Port Hill.
Marist juniors seem to have a decent amount of teams as does Eskview.

I haven’t seen Napier South in a few years,  Taradale seemed to have hardly any teams, however that was only what I observed at my own child’s footy. Could be very different with different age groups.

Fed Cup draw done yesterday. Bit surprised by Levin not entering as you'd fancy them to have a chance at winning the thing. Quite a few games at neutral venues with the large amount of travel involved. Games are scheduled for Monday 27th April. Poor Takaro, away in New Plymouth on the Saturday then away in Hawkes Bay on the Monday...

Draw as follows:

PNU Reserves vs Feilding, Massey Uni
Moturoa vs Whanganui City, Onuku Taipari
Hawera vs Marist Reserves, Turuturu Park
Taradale Prems vs Takaro, Taradale Park
Whanganui Athletic vs Gisborne United, Park Island
Whanganui Marist vs Napier City Rovers, Wembley
Port Hill United vs FC Western, Skoglund Park Palmy
Havelock North Wanderers vs NP Rangers, Skoglund Park, Palmy

League prediction for East Prems this year (a lot of these teams are very similar levels so could very easily do far better or far worse):
1. Havelock North. Retained most of their title winners from last year, couple decent signings as well.
2. Gisborne United. Jimmy Sommerton is a 20+ goal a season striker in this league, couple other players with good experience like Spawforth as well.
3. Gisborne Thistle. Lost some key players but made some signings from England, will be interesting to see what level they are at.
4. Taradale Reserves. Looked very good second half of last year, CL2 squad seems to be quite large this year so might have a few good players dropping down.
5. Port Hill United. Always seem to do alright.
6. Maycenvale United. Still got Dakota so looks like they'll be trying to just outscore teams once again.
7. Napier City Rovers Reserves. Very young team in pre season, will be very dependent on how many CL players they are allowed to drop down.
8. Western Rangers. Coaching change mid-preseason, have lost a lot of their players, will be interesting to see how they get on.

Well Done to Whanganui Athletic another dominant performance and result I heard despite a terrible pitch. Didn’t see the game as I was playing for the rockets.

3 players U18 in the starting lineup and another 2 on the bench. Aza is a great coach for our club. Hope they stick it to you people who try bring them down telling lies jealousy is a terrible thing

Eastern Prem Results

Gisborne Thistle 0-8 Gisborne United
Havelock North 2-1 Taradale Reserves
Port Hill United 3-2 Maycenvale United
Napier City Rovers 3-1 Western Rangers

I knew Thistle were going through a lot of change but didn't realise it was this bad. 7-0 at halftime.

What happened to your ressies getting pumped 12-1 by Takaro?

Donnelly Park must have gone rapidly downhill as it was the best grass surface in the league bar none last season.

The young players from last seasons reserves have moved up and have been playing for the first team. So the old lions team (3rd team) is pretty much the reserves now and they’re real young.

For someone with such a big opinion about Athletic you sure seem to know nothing about us.

Moving on, this weeks games in the West:

NP Rangers vs PNU Reserves, Merrilands, Friday 1pm
Big defeat for Rangers and a big win for PNU last week, but still hard to call. Its a tough trip to the naki and it's really hard to read anything into a big win over a basketcase in Marist. Rangers to bounce back with a win.

Marist Reserves vs NPBHS, Skoglund, Saturday 1230pm
Marist look in real trouble after their defeat this past week. Boys High will be well coached and their better players from last year seem to still be there. Boys High win

FC Western Reserves vs Takaro, Lynmouth Park, Saturday 245pm
Both teams with tight wins last week. Takaro struggled badly with trips to New Plymouth last year, can't see anything other than an FC Western win here

Whanganui Athletic vs Moturoa, Wembley, Saturday 245pm
Big wins for both last week, maybe the two teams to watch this season. Bit of drama around this one last year, will be an interesting battle. Athletic to win.

Feilding vs Levin, Timona Park, Saturday 245pm
Tight preseason battle between these two, could take a moment of magic to seperate them, going for a draw.

Do you think many of the FC Western first team played in their opening fixture?

They could be two different sides last year. Their Fed cup team last season was a hybrid of their CL2 team and their first team. I wonder if they did similar for game one?

There are 5 names in the lineup vs Boys High that are in their 23 man Central League squad. Looks like the younger lads tbf rather than big hitters. Definitely a big advantage being able to move as many as they like between the two squads.

I really hope they do well in Central League, despite the ragged nature of the clubrooms and the slope in one corner it is a nice spot for footy with the banks behind either goal. They have rubbed some of the other clubs up the wrong way though!

See they've nicked Lewis Cumberledge off Rangers - if he can learn to stay onside he could be some player.

What have they done to rub clubs up the wrong way? Poaching the odd player I'd understand tbf. I'm still pretty shocked that Lynmouth reaches the standards for Central League grounds as well tbf. Still nice to see some Central Football representation though.

This weeks games in the East:

Gisborne United vs Port Hill United, Harry Barker Reserve, Friday 2:45pm
Huge win for United last week. Harry Barker is going to be an absolute fortress for them this year. Port Hill lost in a close game against Vale but hve to imagine Gisborne's quality and depth at home will be enough will make this a safe bet. United to win big again.

Maycenvale United vs Taradale Reserves, Hastings Sports Park, Sat 3pm
Vale starting off the season with a win. Still got a few very decent players for Prem level knocking about. Taradale holding their own against Havelock North. Could go either way but I'd say Maycenvale to win.

Napier City Rovers Reserves vs Gisborne Thistle, Bluewater Stadium, Sat 3pm
Rovers kicking off the season with a win over Rangers, didn't look like too many CL players dropping down. Thistle obviously struggling early, hard to imagine Thistle travelling well. Win for Rovers Prems.

Western Rangers vs Havelock North Wanderers, St Leonards, Sat 3pm.
Rangers starting with a loss against a young Rovers team, may take a few games for their young squad to gel. Havelock with a closer than expected win over Dale prems, surely still have enough quality to do the job. Havelock win.

It was explained to me that the "traditional" clubs lose their juniors to Boys High for high school footy, then there's a bit of a pipeline from there to FC Western. There's a fair few lads floating around who've been discarded by Western so that probably plays into it.

Sounds a fair bit like Napier city in the east. It’s possibly the cost of having a CL side in the region?

It's always a strange situation because whats the point of having a CL team in a region like the Naki or Hawkes Bay if they're not going to give opportunities to locals.

Always feels frustrating to lose players to these clubs but you need them to be give these players the opportunity to play at a high level.

For other Naki clubs, the best case scenario is that young players stick around longer now that CL is an option, and then eventually these trickle players down to the CL2 and Prems sides.

Thistle played really well against Rovers by the sound. Great bounce back after last weeks result, taking home the challenge shield off Rovers.

Maycenvale v Taradale looked like it was end to end with a late goal to win it.

Gis United v Port Hill was close (2-1) until the Port attacking mid got sent off after about 50 mins for a second yellow. Gisborne then just powered away for a comfortable win.

Haven’t heard anything about the havelock game, but the result shows they were far too good for Rangers.

So far it looks as though Havelock and Gis United are the teams to beat.

This weeks games in the East:

Gisborne United vs Napier City Rovers Reserves, Harry Barker Reserve, Sat 12:45pm
Another big win for United last week against Port Hill, aided by a red card for Port but again looking very strong. Rovers with a disappointing loss at home against Thistle, looked like no first team players involved and cant imagine any will be dropping down for an away game in Gizzy. United to win big again.

Havelock North Wanderers vs Gisborne Thistle, Guthrie Park, Sat 1pm
Wanderers really kicking off their season against Rangers, Thistle with an impressive away win, will be interesting to see how they back it up against a strong Havelock side. Would back Havelock to win this one.

Port Hill United vs Taradale Reserves, Marewa Park, Sat 3pm
Port with a tough away day in Gisborne, Taradale with a hectic close loss to Vale. Leaning towards Dale ressies getting the win here today.

Maycenvale United vs Western Rangers, Mitre 10 Sports Park, Sat 3pm
Rangers struggling early on and already on their 3rd coach of the season. Vale picking up their second dramatic win of the season. Would be surprised to see anything other than a Vale win in this Hastings derby game.

I can’t see anything other than a resounding Gisborne United win over NCR. United are a physically strong team. NCR have some talented young players, but from watching their pre season they have very little physicality. They will really struggle on Saturday.

I’m still picking Havelock as favourites for the league (marginally over Gis United) so surely will cruise to a win.

Port v Taradale is a tough one to pick. Port and Taradale have arguably been unlucky in their first two games, Taradale looked sharp in their losses against Havelock and Maycenvale. Port the same against Maycenvale and they certainly challenged Gis United until the red. I’m picking a draw, but if there is a winner, it’ll only be by one goal.

I agree with you that Maycenvale will go 3 from 3. Though this will likely be their easiest win of the season so far.

I wonder if the NCR CL game being postponed will mean they drop a few more to the reserves to play Gis United. Though I’m not sure how many would fancy travelling that road

Couple of 4-4 draws
Taradale 4-4 Port end to end game, Taradale probably thought they had won it with a late goal, but Port with an equaliser with the last kick of the game.

4-4 Vale v Rangers, very surprised the Vale didn’t put Rangers away, great result for Western.

5-0 Gisborne Utd v NCR Res. No suprises there.

6-2 Havelock v Thistle solid win for the favourites to win the league.

This leave havelock and Gisborne United both with 9 points after 3 games.

Genuinely seems like the player pools are drying up. Its been happening in Hawkes Bay for a while as well (case in point Napier Marist dropping down the leagues). Seems like theres less players sticking around in these areas, from what I've seen anyway.

This is going to be lengthy so buckle up!

In this case it's more that a few chickens are coming home to roost with Marist. There seems to be a lot of resentment around the DoF being brought in from overseas on a full-time salary when lower down the club they feed off scraps.

Very aggressive in headhunting from other clubs in the past, as well as having by far the largest number of teams and players in the region, they're not very well liked by everyone else. Combine that with the Director of Football deciding to clean house and tell a bunch of players and coaches they are not needed and it's a recipe for disaster. Bit of a closed shop in their 1st team so it's known that pathways are almost non-existent so it's not super attractive to join them lower down the grades.

Their women's section is fucked. Lost a bunch of 1st team players to PNU, overseas, and just left the game. Their Reserves were supposed to be part of the new Fed League, but they must have realised they would be uncompetitive so they pulled out. Then they were part of the Manawatu Championship but couldn't get through preseason friendlies without social grade players, and basically disbanded their Reserve team.

On the men's side, they got rid of their Reserves and third team coaches, and all 99% of the players went with those blokes to Takaro. Takaro's reserve team in the Manawatu Champs is basically last years Marist Reserves team from Western Prems. A couple of social grade teams have also switched over to Takaro. Marist have gone from having teams in every division, with multiple teams in most of the social grades, to not even having teams in the Champs and Div 2. Current Reserve team in the Prems are basically a bunch of schoolkids from their academy, which has been overtaken by PNU.

Takaro have overtaken them now, and Feilding are very close behind them in terms of numbers.

Levin:

Seem to be a really well run family club. Really enjoy playing them down there, although over the years our games with them have often been fist fights threatened by the possibility of a game of football breaking out. Pitches last season were looked after by a lad who has previously done the Basin Reserve and the cake tin, was perfect when we went down there. They do a mean feed after match, especially the trays of mac n cheese.

Footballing wise they always seem to be competitive at the top of the table. They have a core of lads who've been playing together for years, from high school through the ranks into the first team. This is complemented by some very talented younger players. I'm a big fan of the James brothers, Olly up front and Toby sits deep in the midfield. I am surprised they aren't playing higher for a welly team tbf. Well coached, and seem to prioritise local youth which is always a good thing. It's a shame they shit the bed against Athletic as I'd fancy they'd do alright a level higher.

Some of their teams lower down the grades are absolute dickheads tbf, especially their "Social" team which is now almost entirely South American. Last time I shared a clubroom with them they'd had three blokes sent off.

PNU

Amalgamation of Massey University FC, Red Sox, and North End. Grown out of the outstanding academy that Red Sox have grown over the past decade, this was a natural conclusion to the partnerships these three clubs were developing. Through Massey they have access to the best facilities in the Manawatu, through Red Sox the academy, North End brought a few quality players but not much else. The aspirational teams all play under the PNU badge, with social grade teams representing the individual component clubs.

They have good coaches down through their teams, and a clear style of play they are trying to build. I have watched them a bunch and I am a big fan, once they manage to get Central League they could go on to be a force.

Unfortunately, I don't think the model is sustainable. It has sucked all the identity out of the individual clubs, with resentment building from the old boys whose fees ultimately make the whole thing possible. Red Sox as a football club are dying, the Netball side of the club is propping them up. They have four senior teams, two in Div 4 (lowest social grade) and two in Masters. The two in Div 4 are Masters aged players too. They've lost teams each season for past few years. It's a real shame as they were a great club and have awesome clubrooms. North End have been dead for years really. Two social teams. And Massey similar boat, two social grade teams.

When the model relies on players in lower grades fees being funneled up this is not ideal. The clubs have lost their identity, and if the kids from the academy don't make it there's nowhere really for them to go when the next crop moves up to senior footy.

Over the summer they introduced a subscription where members can donate from $1 a week, so clearly, they are trying to fix the funding model before it’s too late.

It was always gonna be interesting to see how an amalgamation would work in Central Football. Seemed like it had definitely been on the cards for years though with Palmy football stagnating for a bit, didn't realise about the discontent bubbling beneath the surface.

I'll try and be as unbiased as possible, be interesting if you guys can guess what club I am at when I finish 🤣
I'd love to know what club you are in!!
I'm also in the Manawatu, its good to see some local flavor being added on here. There is a lot of Footy happening here and overall its growing which is brilliant.
The central region is a really tough environment to bring together a truely competitive top tier with how split we are as a region and there are some entrenched club lines. What PNU did bringing together 3 clubs to build a strong base was excellent to try and bridge some of those, how thats evolved and will continue to evolve as a "Club" will be interesting in the future.
