Gonna be honest here, I turned off Preston v Jets at HT since it was like 10:30, Jets were 2-0 up and I had an 8am the next day (which is why I am awake now) and thought the game was sealed... Boy was I surprised to open reddit this morning
I would assume they ran out of legs in the second half? Only 2 weeks into training right now.

Last night's result means now that all A-League clubs have been Cupset - Newcastle Jets were the final remaining club to have never lost to an NPL team in the Cup.

Got our first cupset. The Jets (AC champions last season) blow a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Preston Lions.

Could have another one as well with the Queensland Lions and Glory heading to ET. Yep, goes to penalties and Glory lose.
Peak Perth, typical. Perth out on penalties at the round of 32. A repeat of their round of 32 loss last year in the Australia Cup on penalties vs the Phoenix. Going to be a dire season for Perth again. & their players/staff late pay won't go in until tomorrow. 🫣

That's 3/10 A-League club knocked out already and it wouldn't surprise me if Sth. Melbourne could pull one over on Adelaide. Like clockwork people online are calling for the A-League to be opened up, and while I wouldn't go that far I do think it's proof the Championship is worth building. That said SU58 being in top tier is probably the last thing we need considering the media scrutiny over in Aus...

A-League sides are completely under done fitness wise. So any time one gets drawn vs a higher level NPL side in the first couple rounds, its gonna be a big chance for a cupset.

I reckon that is what makes it a fun competition.

Yes. Some of the Mediterranean Australian founded football clubs have awful hostile club culture. Ultra nationalist/fascist Balkans war stuff being laundered into Australia. If only they could be normal like Wellington Olympic or Auckland City, instead of harboring these nutters that want to return to Srebrenica gun in hand.

I'm not too familiar with Aus football history, Tartan Kiwi could probably provide a better answer, but I'm guessing NZF and the regional FA's were more strict than the Aus FA's. Olympic when they were Apallon had incidents of punching players and the ref at least once, for which they were banned by the Wellington FA, making them have to come back as a Christian-Greek club.

Also, Mediterranean clubs never came to dominate NZ like they did in Australia, which might be a contributing factor?

Well yes, and I prefer it that way over here. It's ridiculous the stuff that has happened over in Aus on and off for decades. I'm pleased we have largely avoided that here. I would like it if we could have a few more fans watching our local park teams though. That is what the Aussies are doing right sometimes, getting a few more fans with flags and banners to park games. Although we don't have an Australia Cup type thing here, we do have Chatham Cup at least.

This was behind the decision of (then) FFA to invite franchises to bid for ALM licenses leaving aside the old NSL clubs that grew from the ethnic communities.   The exception was Perth Glory (which was part of the NSL) but otherwise all the new ALM license holders were largely district-based and "identity-free".
Initially this caused some angst but now, 20 years down the track, this probably was the right decision, allowing the league to be embraced as part of the local sporting culture and not an imported hangover from the Old World.

Pity APIA Leichhardt v Sydney United clashes with the Chelsea Women game on Wednesday, otherwise I would’ve gone along.

There’s still SD Raiders v Macarthur the night before, but Fairfield Showground is a long trek out of the city (not as long as going to see Wanderers was, but it’s different when it’s a Nix game).

And this kids, is why you don't ask me for betting advice lol

Victory progress on penalties. Milanovic with a fantastic free kick to level things up in extra time but Jack Duncan saved 3 penalties in the shoot out.

I feel asleep about 10 mins in, so no idea how Gillion looked. Anyone else watch it?

Fremantle City should be a cakewalk for South Melbourne to go into the next round.

Brisbane not looking any better than the season before. Will they get a new striker soon? Maybe 1 more player not enough, but it would help add to the goal tally.

Wow, South Melbourne needed Penalties in the end to beat Fremantle City. The Draw was paying $7 at the TAB.

And now Macarthur have lost to SD Raiders 5-3 on penalties after conceding a late own goal in extra time.

That brings us to 6 cupsets this year.

Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory are the only 2 A-League teams remaining
