AFC will be much more solid with Pijnaker back. Sakai is nowhere near as good at CB as he is at RB. Dont know how good their other CB options are

Edit: I'll also note that Woud made a crucial intervention in the first half and while he did have a second half shocker, i think it might be somewhat on AFC in signing such a high quality "understudy" in Sail. Way to make a keeper insecure about his position. Maybe some keepers thrive on that but doesnt look like Woud does

Woud is pony. Blaming Auckland for signing someone else because he's utter sharke is ridiculous.

Three for me, and two for them.

I have only watched the 2 Heidelberg games v us and AFC. They finished 2nd in the Vic league and just judging by what I saw, they are better than a lot of the A League teams. I don't usually watch other games but will have a peek at the Jets v Avondale game out of interest

Hey youre probably right. I've seen his blunders in white. But I sorta wanted to see him get a proper crack at being A-League first choice and seeing how he would go, see if he could deliver on his potential. Maybe having the confidence of being undisputed #1 could have helped him iron out those occasional lapses. Might not get that chance now, poor guy

I wouldn't mind  John Anastasiadis replacing Chief if the team isn't a big improvement this year. He's doing well with Heidelberg but has also had success in the Australia cup with Bentley Greens.

I am sure that guy will be getting no shortage of A-League offers in the near term so not much chance we would get him to come over here, we aren't a very attractive proposition at the minute. I think the Nix are just going to give the job to Greenie when Chiefy departs anyway though.

Agree with others there is no doubt Heidelbergs results have been great. What does surprise me is there is little comment that they are deep into their season while the A League clubs are at the start of theirs.
Im not convinced the results would be the same if they were to meet the A League clubs mid season of their campaigns.
Fun to watch though and great to see them put Auckland Bling to the sword

Obvious point but if it is as simple as that, why such unprecedented domination of A-League sides by a NPL team this year but not in previous years? And across the board, there have been significantly more cupsets this year than previous years

you're probably right with that, but that fact alone evens the teams up dramitically which is what makes the cup kinda fun.

Disagree to a degree as i think the position we are in is just the sort of challenge some coaches would love to take up to try and put themselves in the spotlight.

Not convinced someone who has nearly all of their coaching experience at the same club is the right choice for our next coach. Dont get me wrong i like Greenie just dont think he has had enough experience outside of the Phoenix environment.

I havnt kept up with all the various squads and the player movement is it just me or has there been a lot more movement than in other years. Could it be squads havent come together yet or is it just the A League quality isnt there or has the NPL lifted.

Probably a mix of the A-league being weak and the NPL being fired up.

With the Championship starting up a lot of these clubs have a chance to show themselves on a national stage and even get a potential professional league (assuming things work out) so there's more to play for. Meanwhile clubs get to spend less and less on squads leaving them weaker than previous years. Plus think about the confidence they're getting from toppling A-league sides. It's clearly easier to beat us than ever before which probably spurs clubs on more

from "The New Zealand Herald" - Michael Burgess .....

Auckland FC are out of the Australia Cup.

They were shocked by Victorian NPL side Heidelberg United 2-0 in the semi-final on Saturday night. It was a spirited effort from the part timers, who pushed Auckland harder than some of their A-League opposition last season.

The result continued Heidelberg’s giant killing run in the competition, after they had eliminated Western Sydney Wanderers (3-0) and the Wellington Phoenix (4-0) in successive rounds.

The decisive moment came in the 75th minute, after a mistake from goalkeeper Michael Woud, who made a rash decision to rush off his line, allowing striker Bul Juach in for a composed finish. While Auckland FC weren’t at their best or sharpest – they were on top before that point.

As the A-League club then pushed for an equaliser, Asahi Yokokawa caught out some stationary defence before finishing past Woud. While Woud’s error with be highlighted, Auckland FC also paid the price for their inability to create much, with the final product and crossing not quite there, while new striker Sam Cosgrove missed their best opportunity minutes before the first goal.

But it was a special night for Heidelberg, who have yet to concede a goal in the competition and more than matched their illustrious opponents. However they were helped by the circumstances, as the match had been abruptly rescheduled last Monday – brought forward by a fortnight – which caused significant disruption to Auckland FC and also presented a physical challenge to the A-League side, off the back of their 120 minute effort against Sydney FC last Saturday.

But Heidelberg – whose team feature Uber drivers, construction workers, airline staff and civil engineers – are the story, now on track to become just the second NPL team (after Sydney United 58 in 2022) to reach the final.

Auckland FC coach Steve Corica made one change from his quarter final starting XI, with Jake Brimmer coming in for Cam Howieson.

As they had done in previous rounds, Heidelberg started well. They pressed high, were inventive and physically strong and had the clearer chances in the first 30 minutes. Woud was alert to smother as Juach ran through on goal, while a Ben Collins header was just wide. Auckland began to exert more control in the last 15 minutes of the half, with neat work in midfield. The moment of quality was lacking, though Marlee Francois went close, with his snapshot from a narrow angle hitting the crossbar, after a Guillermo May effort had been deflected into his path.

Auckland extended their dominance into the second half – with opportunities falling to Jesse Randall, Dan Hall and May. New signings Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook combined just after being brought off the bench in the 65th minute, with Cosgrove’s shot straight at the keeper.

Auckland were on top when disaster struck. After a quick turnover thanks to an errant Callan Elliott pass, Juach was released by Japanese playmaker Asahi Yokokawa. He had the run on Hall but Woud chose to sprint out of his area and intercept and got it badly wrong, as Juach kept his composure and finished into an empty net.

There was more to come nine minutes later, as Yokokawa broke – catching the defence stationary – before slotting home between Woud’s legs. Howieson went close – defied by a flying save – but time was always against Auckland FC.

Quite a dressing room celebration video in the article.

Looks like they basically invite the whole crowd in there. Be quite cool to see some grass roots NPL fans get to visit AAMI Park, if they host the final there.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/08/31/watch-post-match-reactions-after-heidelberg-beat-auckland-fc-in-semi-final/

Heidelberg United coach John Anastasiadis has shared what he told his team at half-time before they scored twice to knock A-League premiers Auckland FC out of the Australia Cup.

He said he’d been unhappy they weren’t holding the ball in the first spell, when the teams were goalless in the semi-final at Melbourne’s Olympic Village.

“We wanted to get hold of the ball. We were losing the ball too easy.

“I said to the boys ‘we’ve got to try and hold onto the ball, just play football … our football … ‘. We like to play in tight spaces when we train. So we did that a couple of times, and we got through.

“It worked to a tee.”

Second-half goals by Bul Jauch and Asahi Yokokawa gave Heidelberg their third successive win in the cup against A-League sides, having previously beaten Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0 and the Wellington Phoenix 4-0.

“This has been some ride from the boys,” Anastasiadis said in his post-game interview with Paramount+.

“It’s way up there. It’s a phenomenal night for everyone involved in the club.

“Let’s be honest, Auckland are an excellent team. But we just found something.”

They found something alright. That the AFC Keeper isn't a dot on the previous AFC goalkeeper. Paulsen was good for 5-10 points per season in the positive, Woud will cost them. Sail is better but we shall see how he goes.

we've proven to be a pathway for Australian coaches getting their first pro gigs with the likes of Rudan, Talay, Chief, etc. Other clubs have been places where highly rated coaches have gone and ruined their careers. After Arnold CCM went through about five coaches who were never a professional head coach again, for instance.

John Aloisi is likely to be available too and he is more likely to attract offers ahead of Anastasiadis, so we might be in a better place to grab him before anyone else.

Not quite the all NPL final I was hoping for, but it was a good game.

Newcastle remain the only A-League team to never be cupset (for at least one more round anyway!)

I saw earlier today in the rules that the NPL hosting an A-League team rule doesn't apply for the Grand Final and it's up to Football Australia where they want to stage it.

It would be a bit hard on Heidelberg if it's played in Newcastle rather than Melbourne, but it would also be great for the Jets if they got a home final, a lot of casuals would go I'm sure, and a win for them could help see an uptick in their crowds for the upcoming season.

In saying that I still hope it's played in Melbourne

Unlucky. If they had buried their chances.  Move both Avondale and Heidelberg into the A League!! Better crowds than some.  Even Melbourne City struggle to get over 7k except against Victory

they can't afford it, even if APL could let them in without paying for a license fee (which they can't)
