The guy also had a bull shark story about supporting the Crusaders rugby team - when they did not exist.
Sorry, hes full of it and probably got his story from you - am sure you are authentic but he is not. I also had the same thing at that time but like you I found a team reubee
AucklandPhoenix
What’s unusual is he explained why he never played football but hockey with some bull shark story. Wasn’t asked but thought he had to explain himself. Full of bull shark and frankly who cares why you never played. You don’t have to explain yourself.
Anyway back to the game. De Vries excellent. loved Sakai’s passion and you can see why he is the captain. May looked classy.
Side was obviously really up for it and ran hard. If they keep that up they will be hard to break down and score against.
Quality wise, think however they will be well below the Nix
I can vouch for the authenticity of the story. I am a year younger than Luxon and moved to Howick at beginning of 1983. Went to sign up to local club, Howick, got told it was full, sorry try again next year, so ended up playing at Bucklands Beach.
Like 20Legend, here's my observations after getting home from the game;
- who is in charge on in-ground announcing at the venue? Is it Mt Smart's own people, or AFC people? Cause there was no announcements of the teams (in goal, number 12 - Alex Paulsen, etc), some substitutions weren't announced, Tommy Smith was subbed on twice (once as Thomas Smith), and there was no notification of added time. These are easy fixes, but also basic things that should be right every time. - the music acts - did they add anything? There was already a DJ playing (well), the singers took away a bit from what was going on. - the hip-hop crew - needed to be in front of the Port, so those on the East and West stands (ie: the majority of the crowd) weren't playing tennis, looking to the South for the Port, then to the North for the crew, then back again - why have competing visual attractions? - the Port was much, much better than I expected. They had more people than prime-Bloc 5 (and that pains me to say), and were really into it. Need more variety with their chants, but that will come in time? - I was looking out for where Tamaki AFC were but couldn't work it out. This perhaps shows that they are small-time in comparison, and have had far too much attention for a group of their (lack of) size. - why did the guy get kicked out? Was he the one who lit the flare? - The Belgian #6 was immense in the middle of the park, winning a lot of tackles. Easily the best player. If only they announced his name.... - De Vries was also very good, which opened my eyes. I don't know if this is a once-off, or this is how he always is. If it's the latter, he's definitely the left-back cover for Cacace. - May is a talented forward, but AFC couldn't get the ball too him after the 20 minute mark. Perhaps if he played deeper, fed the ball to the wingers, who return the favour when he gets into the box? - I just looked on the website - there are few tickets left for the AFC v Nix match, and some are $425. That can't be right, can it? Or is that dynamic pricing now hitting NZ? - The Brisbane shirt was one of the worst designs in the history of football - but - sponsored by Outkast, so it's good to see Andre 3000 and Big Boi involved (joke). - all this nonsense about the noise of the Auckland crowd - what do you want? I've been to a number of games in Wellington (All Whites), and the most you ever hear is the Silver Ferns-esque let's go All Whites, let's go. Like anywhere, if you want to make noise, you know where to go (the Port, or the Fever). If you don't, then don't. Life carries on.....
they announced both teams over the PA and on the big screen - not sure how you missed that - it was well before kickoff so perhaps you were getting beers?
Thanks for clarifying that. We were there by 4, I would think, got beers at 4:30.....so might have been bad timing. Was in seats by 4:45.
When do the Nix announce their teams to the crowd? I would have thought as close to kick off as possible, as that's when most punters are in?

Nix do it well before kick off as well (not that long after they head back to the sheds after warm ups iirc). Guys behind me turn up just before kick off every game & complain that they have no idea of the line up, so your not alone.

I didn't know anyone paid attention to those announcements anymore... we do live in an age where the lineup can be found by typing the words "Wellington Phoenix" into google.

Will AFC be able to break the past cycle of the Kingz and Knights losing their inaugural game? Tbf though, it was harder for the Knights as they didn't have the choice of playing at home and had to travel to Suncorp.
Plus it was obviously also the inaugural A-League season so the Knights coming into their first match would've had no idea of the Roar's style of play, same situation if they had played another team.
Considering Carlton were coming into their third season in the NSL, the Kingz would've likely had a better idea of how they played.
Hmmm, I don't think the old NSL was broadcast in NZ before the Kingz entered....if that's true, then the Kingz would have had very limited ideas about Carlton. (as it turned out, they had very little idea that whole first season!)
If the Roar was based on the old Brisbane Strikers, which kind of makes sense, then the Knights would have been better prepared in comparison.

With the amount sky charges these days it just about cheaper to go to the games lol
Can I recommend the Tribe app, just as a sport secretary? Has lineups, live scores, reminds me when things are on, tables… It’s what stuff used to use to do their live coverage.
I think it’s just that Auckland is a just a bigger city and it’s not a Facebook thing.
IMO The Port are missing out by not creating a Phoenix type site for fans. All my Auckland relatives are mad keen AFC supporters and nearly all my nephews and nieces play football. None of them do Facebook. There are probably plenty of AFC fans who don’t. Lots of youngsters think Facebook is just not cool.martinb
Also have great Sawmill memories. But yeh from a more extended tap selection…
So do the Port numbers suggest the Fever should try using Facebook? Or just that Auckland’s a bigger place with a lot more registered footballers?
Yeah mate I do wish we could have a different forum to Facebook but is what it is, use the resources of the day etc.
Its a new club after all so I expect stuff like this to just gradually get set up with time.

YF forum existed beofre the fist ball was kcikced in anger! Sure that was 17 years ago and Faceless book wasnt really a thing - but if you want a place to talk the nix this is the place. FB is full of non-fans making commentary on anything and everything but have no connection to the club or the team.
Facebook is a garbage place to organise anything, that's for sure. But the problem with an AFC forum is precisely because the YF forum over the last 15 years has become de facto the NZ football forum. An AFC forum would be to a large extent a duplication of effort.
Ramming liberal dribble down your throat since 2009 This forum needs less angst and more Kate Bush threads

Except it would be an AFC thing, not a Nix forum with an AFC thread. Sure some of us here would join to talk about the team etc, but it would be a better/safer home than FB. I dont think duplicating this forum is an issue in anyway.
I can't believe how we're pretty much the only club in the comp with a dedicated fan made forum! Just as well since I'm not on social media, and certainly not FB.

Bloody Piney even used the name very early!!!! Then a little later I saw the BK signage at the top of the bank.Doloras
Oh, almost forgot. We started with "You can stick your Trump donations up your arse", but after taking in what was around the stadium, that became "You can stick your Black Knights branding up your arse". They're really trying to force that meme.

I reckon Piney was given the directive from Sky/AFC/the league to refer to them as that.
Much like what I imagine happened with Spoonley as well - in the pre-match and early part of the match he was continually calling them the Black and Blue, but by the 2nd half was saying Blue and Black - I get the feeling the club had a word to him about that
What you can't tell in that image is under the flag he is coverd in blue and black paint. The difference in shade is negligble as the blue is quite dark as well.
When I first saw him, I went, WTF, but when I noticed the rest of him I was ok with it... even if I think it was a little misguided.

Bloc 5 had their own forum back in the day, Stand Up If You Love The Kingz. I don't know if any other NSL clubs had a forum, but would presume yer Perth Glorys and yer South Melbournes might have. Well done to the YF crew for having such a successful site.

In terms of A-League clubs - Sydney FC's The Cove, WSW's RBB and CCM all have fan forums that I know of, there may be more but those are the ones I know of

Adelaide used to have gateau.com which is why they were nicknamed the cakes.
While I'm a massive user if the YF forum, I think forums have generally fallen out of favour. Replaced not just by FB but also by WhatsApp, Telegram, sub Reddit and Discord.
Supporter of the world's best football teams: Waikato..., Kingz FC, NZ Knights, The Nix, The Argyle & of course the All Whites

Yes, I think he used the Hard News moniker online, but had DRX on his shirt

Yeah Auckland FC has kind of spread out a bit since some people do stuff on the subreddit, some on the Facebook forum and then a bunch in private group chats and all that. Working so far but maybe its just me but I'd hope there's more organisation in the future.
Tamaki anti fascist crew spelling 'fascist' wrong on their flag is the dumbest shark I've ever seen. It is clear to me they are not real and are just taking the piss. No one serious would spell the word fascist wrong on a printed flag, that shark is going viral.

Look, go back and find someone who isn’t a count without the o. You’re a terrible rep for your group. Though also the idea that supporting a football club makes you a soldier also boggles the mind.
First rule of the forum is not slagging people off. And you’ve misspelled her name to boot.
