Loved his passion

Definitely one of those players you enjoyed watching as you never knew when he would just smack the shark out of the ball and score a great goal.

It is still unclear whether Auckland will be joining A-League Women next season as they were expected to. It is understood a decision has been parked until after the A-League Men grand final between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City this Saturday, but it will need to come soon after.

Auckland chief executive Nick Becker has insisted they are ready and wanting to enter in 2025-26, with the hold-up understood to be related to the extra broadcast and travel costs their participation will impose on Australian Professional Leagues, the cash-strapped governing body of the A-Leagues, which is set to be limping through to the start of a new broadcast deal – and a much-needed financial injection – in 2026-27

Some interesting stats & analysis of Max Mata at Auckland.
Didn't score many goals, but AFC definitely better with him on the field.

Still you get the feeling with Moreno gone, Corica will use that visa spot on a new no 9 who just scores more goals than Mata. Certainly May does better as a AM, than as the sole striker.

https://theniche-cache.com/football/2025/5/29/reactions-from-auckland-fcs-semi-final-exit-vs-melbourne-victory

Prior to the second leg, Guillermo May had a chat with the A-Leagues website in which he mentioned something that coach Steve Corica did which he felt really unlocked his own performances...

“I mean, Steve made really good decisions in the whole season that led us to be the Premiers but yes, I think he identified really well my characteristics and he dropped me off a little bit. He put me another player there so we have more presence in the opposition box. Someone who also makes more forward runs maybe and I can be more in touch with the ball. It was a really, really good decision.”

That other player was, of course, Max Mata. A tall, strong, typical number nine who is really good in the air and holds the ball up well. The finishing can be a little erratic at times but he proved his goal scoring bonafides while playing for Sligo Rovers in Ireland. The thing with May, as he confirms in that interview (though you can figure it out simply by watching him play) is that he doesn’t see himself as a striker. He thinks of himself as an attacking midfielder so to have someone else leading the line really freed him up to play his most natural game. Mata also perfectly fitted Auckland FC’s physical and cross-heavy approach by giving them a target and another aerial presence.

Due to recurring injury niggles, Max Mata only played about a third of the season so he’s not the bloke that most people would think of if you asked them who the team’s most influential player was. But there’s nobody else in the squad, not a soul, whose on/off numbers are as drastically positive as this...

AFC with Max Mata on the pitch:
800 MIN | 22 G | 8 GA | +14 GD | 2.48 G/90 | 0.90 GA/90 | +1.58 GD/90

AFC without Max Mata on the pitch:
1630 MIN | 27 G | 21 GA | +6 GD | 1.49 G/90 | 1.16 GA/90 | +0.33 GD/90

That’s a whole extra goal scored per ninety minutes with Mata involved.

Be interesting to see the goals in the first half stat too. It seemed like they left a lot late, until Mata arrived, when they did more dominating from the first whistle and on the scoreboard. In my recollection.

I have heard that Tommy Smith might leave as his family want to head back to the UK.

But until the start of next season when he is either still in Auckland or not, I can't tell how reliable the source is

Interesting given Ipswich and Colchester areas are somewhat chav. NZ and Australia win over that part of England any day of the week.

Few things to keep in mind, football clubs in Argentina are not owned by anyone but the members, so if the club has few members (newells are a small club and second biggest in Rosario) then often players don’t get paid well or at all, especially if the club social and other departments struggle to make ends meet.. football clubs in Argentina are a mix of social and sports clubs (basketball, hockey, rugby etc) and relay on members to pay monthly fees to keep lights on. This is sadly very common practice in Argentina where players don’t get paid full salaries, mainly due to mentioned above, i highly doubt that was his salary, not even the top players in River plate or Boca get paid that much

There's 3 leaving over the next couple of weeks. Only one that's confirmed is Max Mata.

My other guesses would be Toomey + Galloway.

Smith would be an interesting one if he went back to the UK.

If Galloway and Toomey go, the ex Phoenix link will get lighter.

Will need to sign Cody Phoenix to the first team squad to make up for it.

Annual NBR rich list is out.
Mowbray family comfortably the wealthiest Kiwis out there. Net worth $20 Billion

Peter & Fran doing okay at $2.6 Billion. Hopefully enough to afford a comfortable pair of shoes.

But it will need someone with a NBR subscription to find out where Rob Morrison lies in the pecking order. I'm sure Doloras has one. Know your enemy and all that.

The list has with net worth above $100 Million threshold, so Rob will be on there
somewhere. He might even be quietly nudging billionaire status.

Really looking forward to see who will be the local and import they bring in to replace Mata and Moreno.

It was up front last year this team had its weaknesses and left some goals out there so if they can nail that then it could be a dam good season

Need to also help the defence out as with Alex leaving we may leak a few more goals. You would think with Alex, Mata and Moreno gone and Galloway potentially, there could be some coin left over to spend.

" But it will need someone with a NBR subscription to find out where Rob Morrison lies in the pecking order. I'm sure Doloras has one. "

It used to be that the business press would be more honest than the popular press because the ruling class don't tell lies among themselves, but that's no longer true, they're all huffing Thiel and Musk's fumes these days and think AI Computer God will render the rest of us slaves within 5 years

More seriously, someone on my cricket team lives next to the Mowbrays and *hates* them with a passion

this is not true - APL can't afford it.  Club have no recourse to change that call.

Sounds like at the moment the APL pay all the travel and accommodation costs of ALW teams. Is that the same for the ALM?

Anyway the cash strapped APL can’t afford those extra costs that an Auckland ALW side would impose

That might change in 12 mths when the media rights deal is re negotiated

Is it that much more expensive for them to have an extra women's team than an extra men's team in the comps? Because they originally expected to be having a Canberra men's team joining this season which surely would've cost them a bit in central distributions, extra broadcast costs etc.

Genuine question there by the way - I'm not doubting that it's the APL that have said no
