For all the trepidation I feel about the upcoming away derby (PTSD from the last one), I feel better knowing that even if things don't go the way I want there'll be bratwurst.
Yeah Cosgrove was woeful. May with another poor game, continuing his unfortunate Australia Cup form where he couldn’t look at a ball without turning it over.
I thought Randall wasn’t as poor as people made out in the first game despite bungling chances, and he looked great last night (fantastic goal). Echo the sentiment on Brook, absolute class

14k for the season opener seems low. Expected close to 20k. If the team fails to perform I can see crowds dropping below 10k. But that is still far better than I thought they'd get when the club was announced

afc might have dog shark attack but defense wins silverware and they have a very very good backline. As much as I want them to, they likely won't be having a poor season.
Their backline remained largely the same. It is the pointy bit that is yet to gel properly. With Brook and Randall playing well I don't think it would be an issue if they continue to keep a clean sheet. Woud is no Paulsen, but hopefully some of the vague moments he showed yesterday will be ironed out (playing the ball out to an opposition player should be the first issue to target). On Cosgrove, I thought the game against Victory he had was simply lack of knowledge / experience, and that he would pull his socks up. After the game against WSW, I can see a player that will become a liability unless someone reads him the riot act. Opposition will target him to get him to react. And that is apart from the fact that he could and should do better with his headed ball control in the opposition goalmouth.
AFC defence was oustanding for the last 15 minutes. I think WSW even threw a kitchen sink at them. Woud actually did well. Backs to the wall solid defending. Roll on the 8th Nov.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The crowds will drop off that is a given. How much who knows. It is common to get out of the 09 on a long weekend.
What could be an issue now is the style of football under Corica. It ain't that exciting, and just may end up comparing poorly to what the Nix produce. Very early days of course.
Moreno was a bit mixed, and Corica didn't like his low defensive work rate, but he did add some real goal excitment to the Estonians, and likely added a few of Auckland's Latino community to the gate.

Also its a long w/e and people tend to leave Akld and Welly, also agreed on their defence.

Can't read too much into this one, Auckland empties out over long weekends.

Interesting this excuse has always been rubbished over the years when used to explain Phoenix attendances. Interesting to see it still in vogue

I've lived in both cities and the way Auckland completely empties is something else.

i holiday in the coromandel and last summer there were a lot of people wearing a lot of AFC tops at their holiday homes so thinking the holidays doesn't impact attendence is delusional.

So have i and not convinced there would be a great deal of difference.on numbers leaving at holiday time.

I never said they never impacted, i just find it amusing its being thrown about as a possible excuse for AFC attendance. Yet for years when brought up as a possible reason for low attendances at a Nix game its been rubbished. Seems very much double standards. Cant seem to recall the need to use that excuse last season during holiday periods.
The ASB tennis - or whatever they now call it - happens in Auckland smack bang in the post Xmas/NY holiday 'dead time' and every year it's rammed. Though of course everything else in town is either closed or struggling for numbers. Ghost town, similar to Covid lockdown.
Really banging on about it no doubt about it you certainly like to exagerate things. Made a comment on a post and you lable it something its not. Banging on about something is something you know all about i guess given its what you do constantly about Dome

Capacity nowhere near the same as Mt Smart though.

It's basically the only 2 weeks of high level tennis now played in NZ. The other 50 weeks zero, zilch, nada if you are a tennis fan.
The glory days of tussling with Spain in the Davis Cup at a sunbaked Wilding Park long gone.

Jeez... were you there? I stopped going to the Renouf Centre in Lower Brooklyn when Annabel Croft ignored my invitation to a date.
Amanda Trail who played a bit of Fed Cup for NZ was a star at my first primary school, Amberley Primary in North Canterbury.
Sadly no not at Wilding Park for that 1982 Cup tie, but I do remember how we had the Spaniards beaten on the grass but lost in a bit of a choke (3-2). And something about the Cantab locals upsetting the Spanish team, who of course preferred the clay. "Grass is for cows" - Manolo Santana
Those were halcyon days for NZ Tennis. It's often forgotten we made a Davis Cup semi final around that time, losing to Yannick Noah and the French.
She never knew what she missed. Best game I saw was Kelly Evernden v Stephan Edberg at Wmbledon. Think it went to 5 sets. He was a hell of a player, Evernden.
Pride of Gizzy, Evernden fun fact. He played pro tennis with only one lung after a car accident as a teenager, and one lung was removed. Well Wiki says a lung. I thought it was a kidney
Wiki also says he now lives on Mercer Island just outside Seattle.
Had a weird little tennis relevant experience visiting Melbourne last year. Sitting in Collingwood in a park near those big housing commision towers full of immigrants, made a bit infamous during Covid as super spreaders.
Got talking to this local guy playing with his kids. Turns out he was a former NZ age group tennis player (Cook Islands descent), who had spent a few years in a US College on a scholarship there. Think he played with the likes of James Greenhalgh & Steven Downs (spp?) who won Junior Wimbledon doubles.
But sadly this guy's life had turned for the worst. His ex partner (mother of his kids) a drug addict, and he had battled mental illness. It was hard to imagine his former life as a promising sportsman. Just sad.

Brook looks dangerous but pretty much all his movement is sideways. Not sure how much end product he will have in this floating role that Corica has him playing.
He had a heart condition or something too didn’t he? Edit: read the comments before posting…… lung, well done folks.Jessie Merino
