Auckland FC - Once the Knights, Always the Knights

Most of the negativity comes from a cultural rugby primacy mindset, plus football own goals. IE the Knights.

We’re at a very interesting time for the balance of the sports, so I guess we’ll see how it plays out. It’s changed a lot since the start of the A league imo.

Be interesting to see how many Aucklanders who support the Phoenix turn their back on the club once Auckland FC are up in running. A lot of fence jumpers in kiwi society. See how many true Phoenix fans are out there. Read somewhere that there is an Auckland Ultras up in running....Anyone in Welly up for a scrap?

I'd love to know if the Auckland Ultras group that apparently formed has a FB page or something for research purposes.

I'm in Hamilton so will consider season tickets for the Auckland team if I can find some like-minded individuals to carpool to games with. But I don't know if ill ever stop supporting Wellington. Its been a long time now and I've poured a lot of emotion into that support.  But if your local to Auckland there is no issue in supporting the Auckland team over the Nix.
If you're talking about the general Auckland fan group on FB, this is it: https://www.facebook.com/groups/878898400329819

I remember the true anti-Nix periods, where the news would virtually celebrate during the sport section if the Nix were a bit crap.

The truth is it was from a time when most journalists had probably never attended a professional football match in their lives, and thought a gentle All Blacks clap at full time was the pinnacle of sport.

So much has changed since then. Rugby is dying. The Pheonix aren't crap anymore. The U20 and especially the WWC has shown NZ media how big football actually is. And Foley seems to be the real deal.

not sure if this is covered somewhere but I recall at the time of the Nix the media sentiment was mixed, some excited about Ricki Herberts chances in charge of the team and then a bunch of journo's who were scared about football taking something/anything away from eggball hence the negative press.

There is less of the latter around now so perhaps part of the difference.

Part of the Wellington problem may well have been the known background of Terry and then later, Morgan’s involvement. Auckland are certainly in the honeymoon period but we know how quick things can turn.
Doloras
Can I ask why the media coverage of this is so overwhelmingly positive, as opposed to the continual drumbeat of press negativity for the Nix throughout its existence? Is it as simple as all the journos live in Auckland? No, that can't be it - Auckland-based journos are known for being miserable sons of beeyotches who drag down anything new or interesting. Can it be that Foley just hires very good PR people?

Even me as a relative newbie to NZ has noticed how much bias there is towards AKL, and it's not just sport. There are no media outlets (bar RNZ) in Wellington and it's reflected in it's coverage. I can't comment on those previous owners as it was well before my time, but seeing how the media operate in this country, I have no doubt that they just added fuel to their fire.
Stuff is based in Wellington.

they have offices in Wellington and Auckland and Christchurch
Sure, but its head office and main newsroom is in Wellington.

I genuinely didn't know that. Every day is a school day!  I had thought it was just an office / studio here.

I think it's a legacy of the Dominion Post and the Press being the two biggest newspapers in the old Fairfax media group. They didn't really have major daily Auckland newspapers.

Head office is shown here: https://app.companiesoffice.govt.nz/companies/app/ui/pages/companies/1301556/addresses

Not sure why people are getting upset. There are no so called football media with any credibility in this country so take it with a grain of salt. These guys that put something out are just monday - thursday bloggers. relax.

I enjoy his work.
Some of his methods are a little, shall we say, a bit off the wall..
But otherwise he's got some good stuff.

Definitely beats not having a Latino talk about New Zealand Football that's for sure.

I've got Argentinian friends who joke about the "try to explain Peronist politics to non-Argentinians" challenge (you start from the point where somehow it's far-Left AND far-Right at the same time)

Because the Phoenix directly followed on from the Kingz/Knights, who were a debacle in the end.

But now there has been a good deal of time since the Kingz, people look back on them with fond memories, hence the feels.

Given he's on a 3 year deal at Perth I doubt he's considering leaving.

And sure he's been benched but he left us as the #1 in the middle of a massive form slump. if he wants to be the #1 moving clubs might not be the right option.

Great. I think he would like the opportunity to start over.
If Cook is likely to be a long term starter, then I'm sure Perth wouldn't want a larger wage burning a hole on the bench either.

Alot of Kiwi footballers would be excited about the prospect of returning home to NZ, as a foundation member of a new shiny ALM team in NZ's biggest city. Bankrolled by a billionaire, who's promising to challenge for silverware immediately.

Sail's also an Aucklander. And like all the 7-8 keepers who have been in around the AWs in the last few years, he will have a half eye on the 2026 WC. These guys all know that only 3 GKs can go to North America, and they are likely to be the 3 keepers starting regularly at a reasonable level. At the moment that's only Crocombe & Paulsen.  The clock is running out on the rest. It's gonna get cut throat. Tzanev, Woud, Sail, Searle & Marinovic (if he's not retired) all need to consider their next move very carefully. Gray & Sims could even come into the mix.

Perth don't want to pay Sail big wages to sit on the bench. If Auckland FC semi promise him the no 1 starting spot (with a young guy as the backup), it screams out mutual termination.

Absolutely agree with all of this, particularly the last point. Getting mutual is the A-League's signature dish that is seemingly whipped out at the first inconvenience some times, but it reeeeeally makes sense for this situation - and as you say, for both parties

Aye but when he went there it was because they weren't going to stop him breaking his contract if he got a better deal - so unlikely to be there for 3 years anyway, ok the intention was europe but pretty sure Glory will be fine giving him a "mutual termination" and he ends up at Auckland

Cook has been in good form. If Sail can get signed in Auckland, then good for him.

Sail, Woud for Auckland FC?

Or someone up and coming?

Or Marinovic? The sniff of a WC?

"personal and family reasons" - always the out for some but I'm sure Oli will say it upfront how it is.

People suggesting he will stay at Perth because hes on a 3 year deal. clueless.

He will sign a 2 year deal possibly 3 if he can push it out with Auckland FC.

Oli will be the senior keeper. They also want to sign a younger prospect.
