Too many to be all Leggy's relations.

Leggy is fairly articulate! And a long standing skeptic of many things…

It’s a bit like Brexit- people felt emboldened to abuse others in the street.

Or perhaps there’s a PR contract with a troll farm, who knows? Certainly given gun and tobacco funding and international freedom loving friends it’s all possible…

But more likely a small loud minority who feel it’s currently their moment.

And small loud and nasty does also describe my memories of Terry McFlynn too!

The club really want to have some contact with the fan group leaders and discuss their intentions…

Yeah facebook its a pretty horrid place sometimes - especially on the variety of sporting 'fan' pages.

A while back I commented on the suitable of Facebook as the avenue for the Auckland supporters and I coped a bit of flack. After visiting their FB page I feel like my comment has been vindicated. IMO the Yellow Fever site has been brilliant and it has stood the test of time. As a format it works really well and it should be the model that the Auckland supporters adopt. A big pat on the back for everyone  involved in its set up and maintenance. Social media has turned into a cesspit for wackos to spout their prejudices.

Don't go dragging Bloc5 down.  Many of them/us are here.

FB is for old people. I'm sure the younger (sub 50) fans will be nowhere near it, using other media forms instead.

It would not surprise me in the slightest if that lot there are the old ACFC knitting circle who were so vocal about dragging the Nix down back in the day.

I'm mid twenties and steer well clear of Facebook. Only thing I use it for is its messaging platform. In general I think social media is a cancer and as an avid Nix fan it is a godsend that I found this website - honestly you guys need to advertise more because its great here! I could never stomach joining one of those Nix Facebook groups, they look grim as fudge.

Anyway, moral of the story is Auckland should 100% do something similar to this site. Even if they totally rip off this site it would be all good. I'd actually love to be able to raid their site and foster some good banter!

Reddit has distinct communities and a simpler layout and interface than facebook which reinforces the subreddit as something that is distinct, some communities are good others are scum. Because you follow communities and not people, and communities have moderation, it's easy to weed out the bad ones.

But, this sort of forum has existed since the start of the internet and is quite old fashioned. Personally, I prefer having a distinct place which is dedicated to a niche rather than trying to make a larger network.

However, for something like this people need to pay the hosting fees and domain registration, keep on top of spam, patch it, administer it, etc. It's not an insignificant cost, YF used to have sponsorship and sold a lot of merch,  now I assume it's being funded mostly by the patreon.

I have to disagree sorry mate. Reddit is what you make of it i think. Plenty of fantastic small communities on that platform. When they're well moderated they can really be enjoyable to be a part of. If you go looking for toxicity though it is very easy to find on reddit.

I follow the ALeague subreddit there and it is quite good. Generally everyone just wants Aus/NZ football to get bigger i reckon so it is mostly positive. The chat is quite good too. The team subreddits are mostly dead but might be a good alternative if websites like this weren't a thing or could no longer be funded

the team subs are dead because the teams have existing forums. But the A-League sub, especially the match day threads, are top notch. There is no reason why the teams subs wouldn't be good if that was the primary location for team chat and it was well moderated. Lots.of fan forums were cesspits that failed. Facebook is different because a lot of the people who use it are fudgeing idiots and it gets real personal.

I know the idea with a fan forum is it's set up, run and moderated by the fans. But hell Auckland is owned by a billionaire. Couldn't Mr Foley just chuck a few thousand at setting up a website similar to this one.

As long as at the same time, he's okay with being criticised on the same said forum!

The Foley Group did start a new NHL franchise in Vegas, no doubt a bigger deal than a little football team down in NZ. Bit of competition in Nevada for your entertainment dollar. I'm sure he will be bringing over from the States some folks with good experience in the fan engagement space.

Some things should be organic and independent of a club’s ownership. Imo a fan group and its associated forum/discussion boards/general organisation should be one of those things.

The club should 100% give its backing to such endeavours, but in the end owners are temporary, fans and club identity are enduring.

For sure you want the separation so forum members can vent or praise to their hearts content eveything about the the club. But I just talking about a small amount of cash to set it up and then leave the fans to run it.

And re Auckland FC's owners, everything looks like 79 yr old Foley is in for the long haul. Son ready to succeed him, when he disappears into the next life. All looks more permanent than temporary, with their world club network plans. This isn't like the Glazers buying a club that's 130 years old or anything.

The deals have been announced as though they are signing with the Roar & Macarthur respectively, I wonder if they are in fact signed with Auckland and merely loaned to those teams. Surely it'd be foolish to not have anything signed on the dotted line with Auckland, what happens if they get long-term injuries late in the season? But if they are loan arrangements, would this not need to be registered/listed somewhere?

Edit: oops, seems I'm repeating what's already being said in other threads

Contracts might be fitness dependent? IE no match fitness, no contract?

Still- Marco and Tommy seem like decent signings, depending on how much they’re on. Signals of intent. It’s hard to tell if Smith is too slow for the league now. But even just being in the team for the first season as defensive cover and leadership would be good.

Someone said they went for some other Kiwi boys, but were too slow? Any ideas who?

Amazing how quiet it’s been on the Auckland front. It’s been three months since the new club was announced. They have a CEO, coach and director of football……and nothing! I am sure they are working their butts off to get this going but the silence is a bit bizarre. Not even a club name yet!!!!!!
If they wanted to kick stuff off they could start a survey…..suggestions for a name for the club. Get the public involved, start some buzz.
The way things are going the players will be introducing themselves to each other on the bus going to the first match.

That first paragraph also sums up my own situation completely. I'd also add that one of the earliest childhood and teenage memories of the internet was using forums  So while their mainstream appeal seems to have disintegrated across the board, I'm getting a two for  one deal of a place to engage with other active lovers of the club I support but also the wider community of NZ Football as a whole, and a nostalgia trip of the good ol' forum accessing days.

I have no connection to Wellington at all save for a few friends that live that way. But I'm an NZ football fan, and Wellington has the only professional football club in NZ. When noises first started being made about an Auckland expansion team I entertained that it would make more sense for me as someone who did at one point spend seven years living in Auckland but then I quickly remembered this here YF forums and thought "nah bugger that noise. Nix till I die!"

The new club have already sent out a low key questionaire to registered members apparently. Included a question about Black Knights being a name option.

I reckon they will have already signed some players but are keeping it quiet. Corica & McFlynn will be busy each day looking to build that squad. But when do they announce any signings?  Do they want it low key, and any overseas based player revealed to the media via a video conference, or do want them in person at Mt Smart holding aloof a scarf in front of the cameras? Many of their prospective signings (local or visa) will be overseas until mid-late May in season in Europe or wherever.

Realistically the only players off contract and/or in NZ now, they could have reveal in person for maximum media exposure are the likes of Jesse Randall, Luis Toomey, Deklan Wynne, Michael Woud, Joey Champness(?) or whoever. Maybe they want their first announced signing to be more high profile than that. Maybe they will do a big launch in mid/late May with about a dozen signings all present and announced at the same time. And before that you want your team name, shirt & obligatory scarf all sorted.

Maybe Rojas & Smith are already signed on for 24/25 and their short stints at Roar & Bulls are just to keep match fit. But it would have been a bit lame to announce then as the first signings, and then in the same breadth see then away on loan deals across the ditch.

Auckland seem a long way ahead of Canberra. Also lets not forget the Nix Phoenix were awarded a license on 19th March 2007 and just over 5 months later on 26th August 2007, played their first game. Auckland have double that time to get organised. I reckon with Foley's dosh, and use of marquees they will assemble a reasonable first squad.

Edit - different sport, different country, and the NHL have a specific Expansion Draft. But in 2017 when Foley's Las Vegas Golden Knights first entered the NHL, they named basically their whole 30 man squad (was only 2 announced signings prior) at the glitzy NHL post season awards (season prior) in Vegas.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/nhl/nhl-expansion-team-the-las-vegas-golden-knights-reveal-new-players-jersey-regular-season-debut-date/news-story/0fcb8c6039e2c1aea3082cd715c68015

So they may plan some similar big signing unveiling media event at Penrose, from late May onwards with the players present. That may happen. The Americans do it a bit differently. Cue smoke machines, baseball caps and interviews on stage.

They may have signed some players, but they've also missed out on a few as well because they faffed around. Simply put, players couldn't wait any longer and moved on, only to be subsequently offered deals after signing elsewhere...
